Treatment of oral manifestations of toxic epidermal necrolysis with low-level laser therapy in a pediatric patient.

Drug-induced reactions are complications associated with high mortality and significant morbidity. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are examples of these conditions, which are characterized by skin and mucous lesions. Here, we report a case of a 9-year-old girl who presented with blisters associated with an extensive vesicular rash and multiple ulcerations on the lips and oral cavity. A drug-induced hypersensitivity reaction to antibiotics was suspected, and a diagnosis of TEN was made. The patient was managed with withdrawal of the suspected causative agent,

Efficacy of low-level laser therapy in management of symptomatic oral lichen planus: a systematic review.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology and indefinite cure. This systematic review assessed the efficacy of low-level laser therapy in the treatment of symptomatic OLP. Electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched from date of inception till and including December 2016, using various combinations of the following keywords: oral lichen planus, laser therapy, low-level laser therapy, and phototherapy. Owing to heterogeneity of data, no statistical analyses were conducted. Initially, 227 publications were identified. After selecti

The efficacy and safety of subcision using CO2 gas combined with fractional laser for acne scars: Clinical and microscopic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Various modalities have been used to treat acne scars. CO2 fractional laser is an effective and commonly used treatment. CO2 gas injection into the dermis by needle with high pressure can cause fibrotic collagen breakage, producing the effects of subcision. CO2 also stimulates collagen synthesis by increasing neovascularization and releasing oxygen. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy and the safety of the combined treatment with CO2 gas subcision and CO2 fractional laser for acne scars. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fourteen patients with acne scars were treated with three ses

Savior of post-blepharoepicanthoplasty scarring: Novel use of a low-fluence 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.

Blepharoplasty with medial epicanthoplasty is popular in Asia. However, known complications include scarring, which can take the form of hypertrophic scars or keloids. Treatments for scars include pressure dressing, silicone gels, retinoic acids, radiotherapy, cryotherapy, triamcinolone injections, and surgical revision. These methods, however, have variable outcomes. Recently, there is an interest in post-surgical scar remodeling with lasers. Although the 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG is primarily a pigment laser, it has recently been shown to be effective for treating scars. In the management of

Is paradoxical hair growth caused by low-level radiant exposure by home-use laser and intense pulsed light devices?

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: This qualitative review of paradoxical hair growth, following professional treatments reviews, clarifies whether low fluence is the most probable cause of unwanted hair regrowth after at home light-based treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed causes of unexpected hair regrowth are examined, and our scientific understanding of absorption and scattering of light in turbid tissue is reviewed. Published reports of paradoxical hair growth are assessed. RESULTS: Early laser hair removal studies failed to record the occurrence of hair induction despite the sign

The effects of low-level laser therapy, 670 nm, on epiphyseal growth in rats.

The longitudinal growth of long bones is attributed to epiphyseal growth. However, the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in such structures has still not been studied extensively in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of LLLT, 670 nm, at three different doses on the epiphyseal growth of the right tibia of rats. Twenty-one Wistar rats, aged four weeks, were subjected to the application of LLLT, with dosage according to the group (G4: were submitted to the application of 4 J/cm(2); G8: were submitted to the application of 8 J/cm(2); G16: were submitte

Reversing precancerous actinic damage by mixing wavelengths (1064 nm, 532 nm).

BACKGROUND: Premalignancies resulting from photodamage, such as actinic keratosis and carcinoma in situ, can be treated with various modalities. Most of these treatments may reverse or treat these conditions although they often involve considerable skin irritation over a long period of time, are very uncomfortable for the patients or they need many office visits and sometimes are very expensive, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT). OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of a mixed session of Q-switched KTP 532 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser treatment on precancerous lesions resulting from solar da

Low-level laser therapy, at 830 nm, for pain reduction in experimental model of rats with sciatica.

Chronic pain, resulting from nerve compression, is a common clinical presentation. One means of conservative treatment is low-level laser therapy, although controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two doses of low-level laser, at 830 nm, on pain reduction in animals subjected to sciatica. Eighteen rats were used, divided into three groups: GS (n=6), sciatica and simulated treatment; G4J (n=6), sciatica and treatment with 4 J/cm²; and G8J (n=6), sciatica and irradiation with 8 J/cm². The right sciatic nerve was exposed and compressed using catgut thread. Five days of

Treatment of angiokeratoma of the vulva with pulsed dye laser therapy.

Angiokeratoma of the vulva is relatively rare with few cases reported in the literature. The lesions are usually asymptomatic, but clinical presentations can include bleeding and vulval pruritus. Treatments for symptomatic cases include surgical excision, cryotherapy and argon or carbon dioxide laser therapy. We present a case series of patients who have been successfully treated with pulsed dye laser therapy. This was performed in the outpatient setting without the need for local anaesthesia. All patients had resolution of their symptoms. This treatment modality to our knowledge has not been

Laser-assisted skin healing (LASH) in hypertrophic scar revision.

Laser-Assisted Skin Healing (LASH) is based on the therapeutic effects of controlled thermal post-conditioning. The authors have previously demonstrated on humans that an 810-nm diode-laser system could assist wound closure leading to an improvement of wound healing with a resulting indiscernible scar. A 47-year-old woman (skin type II), who developed systematically hypertrophic scars after surgery, was enrolled for a hypertrophic scar revision. Excess scar tissue was removed. Immediately after the conventional closure of the incision, laser irradiation (120 J/cm(2)) using a 0.8 cm(2) spot siz
