Magnetoencephalographic study of occipitotemporal activity elicited by viewing mouth movements.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the temporal and spatial characteristics of neural responses elicited by viewing mouth movements using magnetoencephalography. METHODS: We focused on differences in responses to mouth opening and closing movements by apparent motion, using an averting eyes condition as a control. RESULTS: A large clear MEG component, 1 M (mean peak latency of approximately 160 ms), was elicited by both mouth movements. We modeled the neural sources using a brain electric source analysis (BESA) method and placed the sources around: (1) the occipitotemporal border at human MT/V5, (2) the …

Temporal organization of cerebral events: neuromagnetic studies of the sensorimotor system.

Somatosensory and motor processes are closely linked to each other; smooth voluntary movements require continuous interaction of sensory and motor cortices. Sensorimotor cortical processes are readily studied with magnetoencephalography (MEG) by recording evoked responses to external stimuli or spontaneous brain oscillations. With whole-scalp coverage activation of several cortical source areas can be detected even when they are temporally overlapping. For example, electric median nerve stimuli has been shown to activate at least five different widely distributed cortical areas. With MEG recor…

Artifact Suppression in OPM-MEG for Parkinson's Disease Patients With DBS Implants Using Oblique Projection-Based Extended Homogeneous Field Correction.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a critical neuromodulation technique that has been widely applied in the treatment of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and epilepsy. As an important functional neuroimaging modality, magnetoencephalography (MEG) has played a key role in DBS research. In particular, the next-generation MEG based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPM-MEG), offers greater potential for clinical applications. However, the strong electromagnetic interference generated by DBS systems makes data acquisition and analysis challenging in OPM-MEG recordings from pat…

Attentional bias to death-related stimuli: Modeling cortical dynamics underlying suicide risk.

This study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and the life/death dot-probe task to investigate neural correlates of suicide risk, specifically whether suicide risk moderates selective attention to death-related cues. Three groups were examined: individuals with a lifetime history of suicide attempt or ideation (suicide risk; n = 17); those with depression but no suicide risk (clinical controls; n = 17); and healthy volunteers (n = 19). Individuals with suicide risk exhibited decreased activity in the superior parietal lobule (SPL), entorhinal cortex (EC), and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) in the …

Ocular Speech Tracking Persists in Blindness, but Its Dynamics and Oculo-Cerebral Connectivity Depend on Visual Status.

While eye movements have been shown to track the speech envelope, it is unknown whether this reflects a hard-wired mechanism or one shaped by (lifetime) audiovisual experience. Further, questions remain about whether ocular tracking is modulated by speech intelligibility and which brain regions drive these synchronized eye movements. Here, we investigate ocular speech tracking in 47 (20 male), blindfolded early blind, late blind, and sighted individuals using magnetoencephalography and source-reconstructed oculomotor signals while participants listened to narrative speech of varying intelligib…

Intentionally versus spontaneously prolonged Gaze: A MEG study of active gaze-based interaction.

Eye fixations are increasingly employed to control computers through gaze-sensitive interfaces, yet the brain mechanisms supporting this non-visual use of gaze remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed 306-channel magnetoencephalography (MEG) to find out what is specific to brain activity when gaze is used voluntarily for control. MEG was recorded while participants played a video game controlled by their eye movements. Each move required object selection by fixating it for at least 500 msec. Gaze dwells were classified as intentional if followed by a confirmation gaze on a designat…

Spatiotemporal dynamics of multispectral oscillatory activity underlying the processing of negative and positive emotional images.

Behavioral and neural responses to visual scenes depicting potential threat or harm constitute core aspects of human behavior and can illumi … processing of negative emotional images, with mixed results among existing studies. Herein, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to derive dynamic functional maps of positive and negative image processing in healthy adults. Alpha (from 200 to 700 ms) and beta (from 200 to 550 ms) oscillations were stronger for negative images in primary and ventral visual regions, as we …

The Dynamic Interaction between Procedural Learning and Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Self-Limited Focal Epilepsies.

The functional brain networks related to procedural learning (PL) have never been explored in children with self-limited focal epilepsies of childhood (SeLFE), despite their role in the development of various sequence-related sensorimotor, language, and cognitive abilities that are impaired in this clinical population. Our study fills this gap by investigating PL and its interaction with the rapid reorganisation of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in SeLFE. A serial reaction time task, preceded and followed by resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings, was used to asses…

Temporal stability and neural complexity in resting-state MEG predict migraine phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Objective brain signatures for migraine, a leading cause of global disability, have yet to be identified, which limits objective diagnosis and personalised management for the condition. Herein, we introduce a novel magnetoencephalography (MEG)-based approach to capturing dynamic temporal signatures of brain activity in this cross-sectional study. We leveraged MEG’s high temporal and spatial resolution to investigate migraine-related disruptions in neural homeostasis within classification models. METHODS: Resting-state MEG data were collected from 250 right-handed individuals (age: …

Multimodal and quantitative analysis of the epileptogenic zone network in the pre-surgical evaluation of drug-resistant focal epilepsy.

Surgical resection for epilepsy often fails due to incomplete Epileptogenic Zone Network (EZN) localization from scalp electroencephalography (EEG), stereo-EEG (SEEG), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Subjective interpretation based on interictal, or ictal recordings limits conventional EZN localization. This study employs multimodal analysis using high-density-EEG (HDEEG), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), functional-MRI (fMRI), and SEEG to overcome these limitations in a patient with drug-resistant MRI-negative focal epilepsy. A 17-year-old with drug-resistant epilepsy underwent evaluation.…

Attentional Modulation of the Cortical Contribution to the Frequency-Following Response Evoked by Continuous Speech.

Selective attention to one of several competing speakers is required for comprehending a target speaker among other voices and for successfu … s as well. It remains unclear whether these are also modulated by selective attention. Here we used magnetoencephalography to assess the attentional modulation of the cortical contributions to the speech-FFR. How cerebral cortex protects itself from interictal spikes: The alpha/beta inhibition mechanism.

Interactions between interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) and distant cortical regions subserve potential effects on cognition of patients with focal epilepsy. We hypothesize that "Работает" brain areas at a distance from the epileptic focus may respond to the interference of IEDs by generating inhibitory alpha and beta oscillations. We predict that more prominent alpha-beta oscillations can be found in patients with less impaired neurocognitive profile. We performed a source imaging magnetoencephalography study, including 41 focal epilepsy patients: 21 with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and…

How to test for phasic modulation of neural and behavioural responses.

Research on whether perception or other processes depend on the phase of neural oscillations is rapidly gaining popularity. However, it is unknown which methods are optimally suited to evaluate the hypothesized phase effect. Using a simulation approach, we here test the ability of different methods to detect such an effect on dichotomous (e.g., "hit" vs "miss") and continuous (e.g., scalp potentials) response variables. We manipulated parameters that characterise the phase effect or define the experimental approach to test for this effect. For each parameter combination and response variable,

Effects of Visual Speech on Early Auditory Evoked Fields - From the Viewpoint of Individual Variance.

The effects of visual speech (the moving image of the speaker's face uttering speech sound) on early auditory evoked fields (AEFs) were examined using a helmet-shaped magnetoencephalography system in 12 healthy volunteers (9 males, mean age 35.5 years). AEFs (N100m) in response to the monosyllabic sound /be/ were recorded and analyzed under three different visual stimulus conditions, the moving image of the same speaker's face uttering /be/ (congruent visual stimuli) or uttering /ge/ (incongruent visual stimuli), and visual noise (still image processed from speaker's face using a strong Gaussi…

Right hemisphere pitch-mismatch negativity reduction in patients with major depression: An MEG study.

BACKGROUND: The mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the event-related potential and its magnetic counterpart, the MMNm, are generated by a mismatch between the physical features of a deviant stimulus and a neuronal sensory-memory trace produced by repetitive standard stimuli. Deficits in the MMN/MMNm have been reported in patients with major depression; however, the results are inconsistent. The present study investigated the pitch-MMNm in patients with major depression using whole-head 306-channel magnetoencephalography (MEG). METHODS: Twenty patients with major depression and 36 healthy …

Resting-state alpha in autism spectrum disorder and alpha associations with thalamic volume.

Alpha circuits (8-12 Hz), necessary for basic and complex brain processes, are abnormal in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The present study obtained estimates of resting-state (RS) alpha activity in children with ASD and examined associations between alpha activity, age, and clinical symptoms. Given that the thalamus modulates cortical RS alpha rhythms, associations between thalamic structure and alpha activity were examined. RS magnetoencephalography was obtained from 47 typically-developing children (TDC) and 41 children with ASD. RS alpha activity was measured using distributed source loca…

Numbers are not like words: Different pathways for literacy and numeracy.

Literacy and numeracy are two fundamental cognitive skills that require mastering culturally-invented symbolic systems for representing spoken language and quantities. How numbers and words are processed in the human brain and their temporal dynamics remain unclear. Using MEG (magnetoencephalography), we find brain activation differences for literacy and numeracy from early stages of processing in the temporal-occipital and temporal-parietal regions. Native speakers of Spanish were exposed to visually presented words, pseudowords, strings of numbers, strings of letters and strings of symbols w…

Effect of changes in stimulus site on activation of the posterior parietal cortex.

A previous functional magnetic resonance imaging study elucidated the specific activity of the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) during a two-point discrimination task compared with that during an intensity discrimination task Akatsuka et al. (Neuroimage 40: 852-858, 2008). If the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), including IPL, is responsible for detecting changes in stimulus sites, PPC activity depends on the level of change at stimulus sites. The aim of this study was to clarify whether a particular site exists that could detect changes in stimulus sites using the oddball paradigm. Somatosensory-
