BACKGROUND: Methylocella silvestris is a facultative aerobic methanotrophic bacterium which uses not only methane, but also other alkanes such as ethane and propane, as carbon and energy sources. Young and aged male rats were used in experiments to investigate a possible decline in hypothalamic secretion of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) to the anterior pituitary of aging mammals. In this study, new 2-indolinone-indole hybrid compounds (4a-s) carrying a benzoyl moiety were synthesized and their cytotoxic effects were examined against pancreatic (MIA-PaCa-2) and colon (HT-29 and HCT-116) cancer cells by MTT assays.
