Computed tomographic appearance of canine tonsillar neoplasia: 14 cases.

The palatine tonsil is an uncommon site of oral canine neoplasia. For affected tonsils, squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent type of neoplasia, followed by melanoma and lymphoma. Computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used for investigation of canine oropharyngeal pathology; however, limited information is available on the CT appearance of tonsillar neoplasms. Objectives of this retrospective descriptive case series were to characterize the CT features of canine tonsillar neoplasia and determine whether specific CT features differentiate nonneoplastic from neoplastic tonsils. Compute

Anatomy and pathology of the masticator space.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews and illustrates the anatomy and pathology of the masticator space (MS). BACKGROUND: Pathology of the masticator space includes inflammatory conditions, vascular lesions, and tumours. Intrinsic tumours of this space can be benign and malignant, and they may arise from the mandibular ramus, the third division of the trigeminal nerve, or the mastication muscles. Malignant tumours may appear well defined and confined by the masticator fascia, without imaging signs of aggressive extension into neighbouring soft tissues. Secondary invasion of the masticator space can

Current concepts in management of oral cancer--surgery.

Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide, with a high prevalence in South Asia. Tobacco and alcohol consumption remain the most dominant etiologic factors, however HPV has been recently implicated in oral cancer. Surgery is the most well established mode of initial definitive treatment for a majority of oral cancers. The factors that affect choice of treatment are related to the tumor and the patient. Primary site, location, size, proximity to bone, and depth of infiltration are factors which influence a particular surgical approach. Tumors that approach or involve the mandible re

Ameloblastoma in Chongqing children and adolescents: a review of 16 cases.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a benign tumor of odontogenic epithelial origin, characterized by local aggression and a high recurrence rate in adults. Although rare in children, it accounts for 10 to 15 % of all ameloblastoma cases. However, a consensus on the clinicopathological features and treatment protocols for this condition remains lacking. PURPOSE: This study aims to summarize the clinicopathological characteristics of ameloblastoma in pediatric patients within the oral and maxillofacial regions. METHODS: Clinical, radiological, and histological data from sixteen pediatric patients wh

Neuroblastoma metastasized to the mandible and the spinal extradural regions: A case report.

Neuroblastoma (NB) metastasized into the mandible and spinal extradural region was rarely reported. We present a case with metastatic NB to the mandible and the spinal extradural regions. The patient received chemotherapy using NB 97 regimen and was tumor free after 8 months, but 9 months after the treatment, the patient presented with lower limb paralysis and persistent pain in maxillofacial region as well as swelling in the left mandibular area. Metastasis to the mandible and the spinal extradural regions was diagnosed based on the spinal and maxillofacial magnetic resonance imaging. Radioth

Soft tissue hemangioma formation within a previously excised intraosseous hemangioma site.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are rare benign lesions, occurring often in verbrata and skull. These lesions can present in the head and neck region being the next most common site with a predominance of the mandible. Herein we report a patient who experienced a soft tissue hemangioma occurring at the previous surgical site three years after the first operation.

Fibrosarcoma of the mandible following supravoltage irradiation. Report of a case.

Supravoltage irradiation is commonly thought not to be carcinogenic. Several recent studies question this concept, as does our case report. A 50-year-old woman with stage 1 squamous carcinoma of the left side of the tongue was treated in 1973 with 73 Gy of supravoltage irradiation. Twelve years later a painful, ulcerated lesion that eventually was shown to be fibrosarcoma developed in the contralateral mandible. The fibrosarcoma in this case fulfills all criteria for diagnosing radiation-induced neoplasia and demonstrates that supravoltage irradiation, like other forms of irradiation, can caus

Ameloblastoma of the jaws.

Ameloblastoma is a histologically benign tumor derived from odontogenic apparatus. The tumor can infiltrate into surrounding tissues. Although it is benign, it presents symptoms of a malignant tumor, such as infiltration into the lungs, pleura, regional and distant metastases, orbit, base of skull, brain and has resulted in death. It also has a high incidence of recurrences, the existence of regional or distant metastasis, showing a microscopic pattern of ameloblastic carcinoma with cytologic features of an increasing nuclear/cytoplastic ratio, nuclear hyperchromatism, and the presence of mito

Myofibromas of the jaws in children.

PURPOSE: Controversy exists as to the most appropriate treatment strategy for myofibromas of the jaws: en bloc resection versus enucleation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes in children with these uncommon benign tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of pediatric patients with jaw myofibromas. The predictor variables included patient demographics, clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, pathologic features, treatment, and follow-up. The outcome variable was cure or recurrence. The descriptive statistics were com

Immunohistochemical Profile of Ameloblastic Carcinoma Arising from an Amyloid-Producing Odontogenic Tumour in a Miniature Dachshund.

A 13-year-old female miniature dachshund was presented with a centrally-located sublingual mass in the rostral mandibular region. The focally ulcerated growth completely covered the left (305) and right (405) premolar teeth and partially covered the right canine teeth (404). A punch biopsy sample revealed neoplastic proliferation of odontogenic epithelium arranged in irregular cords with frequent comedo-like necrosis. Following the initial diagnosis of ameloblastic carcinoma, a bilateral rostral hemimandibulectomy was performed. Although the detailed examination of the resected mass was consis

Giant cell tumor of temporomandibular joint presenting as a parotid tumor: Challenges in the accurate subclassification of giant cell tumors in an unusual location.

Fine needle aspiration is frequently used as the initial diagnostic procedure in the work-up of head and neck lesions, including soft tissue masses and salivary gland neoplasms. Giant cell tumors (GCTs), both osseous and extraosseous, are benign tumors that occur, albeit rarely, in the head and neck region. Extraosseous GCTs may be further classified based on their tissue of origin and specific anatomic location. Regardless of location, giant cell tumors are morphologically similar and share cytologic and histologic diagnostic criteria. Evaluation of imaging is therefore essential to the corre

Delayed tongue necrosis simultaneous with bilateral osteoradionecrosis of the jaw secondary to head and neck irradiation.

We present a rare case of massive tongue necrosis occurring simultaneously with bilateral osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw in a patient with a history of treatment, including surgery and postoperative radiotherapy, for a retromolar trigone carcinoma 8 years earlier. There is a distinct possibility that the extractions and administration of local anesthesia with a vasoconstrictor contributed to the onset of ORN; together, these events may have influenced the blood supply to the tongue. A glossectomy was performed after hyperbaric oxygen therapy. One month after the surgical procedure, the pa

Osteosarcoma of mandible initially resembling lesion of dental periapex: a case report.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor whose cancerous cells produce osteoid matrix. It is the most common primary malignant bone tumor, accounting for approximately 20% of the sarcomas, but only 5% of the osteosarcomas occur in the jaws. They present various clinical and histological aspects, as well as variable disease progression and outcome. This article shows a case report of a 20-year-old woman who presented swelling near the mandibular left premolar. After clinical diagnosis of lesion of the dental periapex, the patient initially underwent endodontic treatment of the tooth involv

Malignant pleural mesothelioma metastasis to the mandible.

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor arising from the pleura or peritoneum. Distant hematogenous metastasis is seen in more than half of cases, preferentially to the brain, lung, bone and soft tissues [Br. J. Dis. Chest 70 (1976) 246]. There has been only one previous report of this tumor metastasizing to the jaw bone [Pathologica 92 (2000) 273].

[American Burkitt's lymphoma with mandibular involvement].

Burkitt's tumor is a undifferentiated lymphoma of lymphocytes B with a characteristic histologic pattern often called as "starry sky". It is classified in two groups: endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (African form), and non-endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (American form). The extranodal involvement of the head and neck in the American type is uncommon, so the diagnosis can be delayed. The authors present in this paper a case of American Burkitt's lymphoma in a patient with gingival hyperplasia, and compare the epidemiological, clinical, radiographic, therapeutic and prognostic characteristics of the ende
