Maternal Cesarean Section and Offspring ASD or ADHD Risk: A Nurses' Health Study II Analysis.

Epidemiological evidence on whether cesarean delivery influences offspring neurodevelopment remains inconsistent. We evaluated the associations between maternal cesarean delivery and childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the Nurses' Health Study II cohort. We included 29 352 mothers and their children in the ASD analysis and 27 704 in the ADHD analysis. We used generalized estimating equations to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the child outcomes according to the mode of delivery. We evaluated confoundi

Emotional resilience and maternal mental health among spanish-speaking mothers facing migration stress in China.

The rapid economic rise of China has encouraged a growing number of migrants from Latin America and Spain to pursue employment, education, and family life across major Chinese cities. Mothers who relocate to China often experience language barriers, cultural distance, limited support networks, and irregular access to mental health services. These stressors shape their emotional resilience and psychological well-being. This study examines the associations between migration-related stress, emotional resilience, and maternal mental health among Spanish-speaking mothers living in China. Using a cr

Maternal and fetal health status assessment by using machine learning on optical 3D body scans.

Monitoring maternal and fetal health during pregnancy is crucial for preventing adverse outcomes. While tests such as ultrasound scans offer high accuracy, they can be costly and inconvenient. Telehealth solutions and more accessible body shape information provide pregnant women with a convenient way to monitor their health. This study explores the potential of 3D body scan data, captured during the 18-24 gestational weeks, to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes and estimate clinical parameters. We developed a novel algorithm with two parallel streams which are used for extract body shape featu

Maternal Obesity and Obstetric Outcomes in a Socially Vulnerable Region Within Brazil's Unified Health System.

Introduction  Obesity is a major global public health challenge and a growing concern among women of reproductive age. In Brazil, more than half of these women are overweight, and obesity substantially increases the risk of gestational complications, particularly hypertension (HTN), diabetes, and cesarean delivery. High-risk prenatal care centers within the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS) play a critical role in managing these conditions, especially in socioeconomically vulnerable regions. This study assessed the association between maternal obesity and childbirth

Maternal Vitamin D Status and Its Association with Neonatal Health: Clinical Implications and Influencing Factors.

Introduction: Adequate maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy is essential for fetal skeletal development and neonatal vitamin D reserves. Evidence from Central and Eastern Europe on maternal deficiency, its determinants, and supplementation effectiveness in late pregnancy is limited. This study assessed the impact of 2000 IU/day and 4000 IU/day maternal vitamin D supplementation during the third trimester, compared to no supplementation, on maternal and neonatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)2D] levels at birth, and explored sociodemographic, obstetric, dietary, and lifestyle factors affecti

Factors associated with cervical cancer screening among women attending maternal child health clinics in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second leading malignancy in incidence among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Early detection through screening and treatment of pre-cancerous cervical lesions is paramount in preventing cervical cancer. We sought to examine factors associated with ever being screened for cervical cancer among women attending infant immunization clinics in Kenya. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analysis from a cross-sectional survey that enrolled mother-infant pairs attending 55 infant immunization clinics in Kenya between 2018 and 2019. Clinics were selected from high and

Examining emotion regulation and inflammation as predictors of maternal mental health after fetal anomaly diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal anomalies occur in approximately 3% of pregnancies and receiving the diagnosis may be a potentially traumatic experience for families. The mental health of mothers receiving diagnoses and what predicts resilience or poor mental health is understudied. Emotion regulation is an important, modifiable, transdiagnostic factor of mental health, and may be protective post-diagnosis. Evaluating biomarkers of stress, including IL-6 and Allostatic Load (AL), can also serve as early indicators of risk, indicative of early intervention. This study assessed whether reappraisal, suppression

Association between maternal adiposity measures and infant health outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Maternal obesity increases risks of adverse fetal and infant outcomes. Guidelines use body mass index to diagnose maternal obesity. Evidence suggests body fat distribution might better predict individual risk, but there is a lack of robust evidence during pregnancy. We explored associations between maternal adiposity and infant health. Searches included six databases, references, citations, and contacting authors. Screening and quality assessment were carried out by two authors independently. Random effects meta-analysis and narrative synthesis were conducted. We included 34 studies (n = 40,14

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Future Maternal Health: How Can the Evidence Guide Postpartum Management?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the postpartum management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. RECENT FINDINGS: Hypertensive disorders are associated with an increased risk of future cardiovascular disease; however, there is a poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms and few recommendations to guide care in the postpartum period. Recent studies have shown high rates of masked hypertension and home blood pressure monitoring in the first year postpartum may be a promising opportunity to monitor health given evidence of high maternal adherence to this approach. In longer term, women with

Associations between maternal mental health and early child wheezing in a South African birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Wheezing in early childhood is common and has been identified in high-income countries (HIC) as associated with maternal antenatal or postnatal psychosocial risk factors. However, the association between maternal mental health and childhood wheezing has not been well studied in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), such as South Africa. METHODS: A total of 1137 pregnant women over 18 year old, between 20 and 28 weeks' gestation, and attending either of two catchment area clinics were enrolled in a South African parent study, the Drakenstein Child Health Study (DCHS).
