Squamous cell carcinoma as a cause of dyspnea and blindness in a horse.

An 8-year-old Quarter Horse mare was examined for chronic nasal discharge and obstruction of both nasal passages. A solid mass lesion was identified in the maxillary sinuses, soft palate, nasal and pharyngeal cavities. Palliative surgery was used to debulk the lesion and facilitate nasal airflow. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed from surgical biopsies. Approximately 7-8 weeks after surgery, the mare was observed to be acutely blind. Ophthalmologic examination revealed central origin blindness and active retinitis. The squamous cell carcinoma had reobstructed the nasal passages. Pressure b

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the maxillary antrum and orbit presenting as acute bacterial orbital cellulitis.

Orbital involvement by plasma cell tumours is rare. Orbital tumours do not generally present as an acute orbital inflammatory disease in adults, though tumours such as rhabdomyosarcoma may cause clinical signs similar to an acute orbital cellulitis in children. We describe a patient with bacterial orbital cellulitis and sinusitis who was found to have an extra-medullary plasmacytoma of the maxillary antrum and orbit and coexisting testicular seminoma.

Sinonasal carcinomas: recent advances in molecular and phenotypic characterization and their clinical implications.

Sinonasal carcinomas are rare tumors with an aggressive clinical behaviour which frequently pose a number of problems regarding the interpretation of diagnostic findings and the treatment. In addition, in comparison with other malignancies of the head and neck region, an elevated fraction of sinonasal carcinomas can be attributed to occupational exposure. This review is focused on the recent advances in the molecular and phenotypic characterization of sinonasal carcinomas, and their possible implications for the interpretation of epidemiological data, as well as for the diagnosis and treatment

Leiomyoma of the sinonasal cavity: CT and MRI findings.

AIM: To determine the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of leiomyoma of the sinonasal cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients with histology-proven leiomyomas in the sinonasal cavity were retrospectively reviewed. All six patients underwent CT and three patients also underwent MRI. The following imaging features were reviewed: size, margin, CT attenuation, MRI signal intensity, and lesion extent. In addition, the time-intensity curve (TIC) of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) were analysed in two patients. RESULT

Dynamic eye socket reconstruction after extensive resection of midfacial malignancies: preliminary results using temporalis transfer.

The functional and esthetic results of reconstructive surgery after extended total maxillectomy or extended orbital exenteration greatly depend on the quality of the orbital reconstruction. We developed dynamic eye socket reconstruction using temporalis transfer to achieve good orbital reconstruction, and examined the usefulness of our technique. Five patients (three men and two women, aged 44-72 years) who underwent extensive resection of midfacial malignancies were treated with dynamic eye socket reconstruction using temporalis transfer. In most cases, eye socket reconstruction was performed

Extraosseous plasmacytoma of the lacrimal duct.

OBJECTIVE: Extraosseous plasmacytoma (EOP) is a rare plasma cell proliferative disorder that commonly affects the head and neck region. We report the first case of a plasmacytoma of the lacrimal duct. METHODS: A 66-year-old man presented with an isolated plasmacytoma of the right lacrimal duct and was treated surgically. RESULTS: The tumour grew slowly for a few months. CT scan and MRI showed a right lateral nasal mass extending from the right lacrimal duct toward the floor of the right maxillary sinus. The lesion was removed completely by endoscopic nasal surgery. DISCUSSION: EOP accounts

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Most cases of lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) occur in the nasopharynx, and LEC in the sinonasal tract is extremely rare; thus, the clinical characteristics of sinonasal LEC are not well known. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old Japanese man presented with a three-week history of left cheek pain, nasal obstruction and cheek swelling. DIAGNOSES: Enhanced CT and MRI revealed a tumor of the left maxillary sinus that invaded the left orbit and hard palate, with multiple swollen left cervical lymph nodes. Open biopsy was performed, and the specimen was diagnosed as LEC. INTERVENTIONS: A

Karyotypic features of malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Cytogenetic analysis of short-term cultures from 6 tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses--one esthesioneuroblastoma, 2 adenocarcinomas and 3 squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC)--revealed clonal chromosome aberrations in all cases. The esthesioneuroblastoma had a complex hyperdiploid karyotype. None of the aberrations was similar to those previously described in short-term cultures or established cell lines from esthesioneuroblastomas. The 2 adenocarcinomas had complex karyotypic changes, which in both cases included rearrangements of bands 9p22 and 14q11. One SCC had 5 unrelated pseudodi

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of soft palate with cavernous sinus invasion.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is an aggressive salivary gland malignancy and rare in minor salivary gland. A soft palate CXPA initially presenting as direct cavernous sinus (CS) invasion is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old male had a 3-month history of a small soft palatal mass with progressing left cheek numbness, proptosis, and disturbed vision. Biopsy of soft palatal tumor showed pleomorphic adenoma. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a tumor involving left maxilla, and extended from pterygopalatine fossa, inferior orbital fissure to CS. Excision of tumor re

[Differential diagnosis of sinugenic enophthalmos].

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous enophthalmos without recent trauma is a rare condition. Its origin is difficult to evaluate. METHOD: Specific properties of this symptom complex are presented based on a literature review and on case reports. Possible connections between enophthalmos and paranasal sinus diseases as well as differential diagnoses are analysed. PATIENTS: 1. 31 year old female patient with right spontaneous enophthalmos and no history of trauma. CT-imaging disclosed tissue formation in the maxillary sinus, partially destroyed medial orbital wall and floor, descended orbital contents foll

Diagnostic algorithm for challenging blue cell sinonasal carcinoma.

The newly emerging sinonasal carcinomas have demonstrated diverse morphologies and specific molecular rearrangements along with deviant clinical behavior from conventional counterparts. We aim to propose a diagnostic algorithm that is based on molecular findings of each sinonasal cancer and is considering the new entities has been called upon. Such a diagnostic algorithm should help diagnostic pathologists establish a diagnosis of a challenging sinonasal blue cell carcinomas and researchers performing retrospective analysis of archival cases. Along with consulting our archival cases, literatur

Nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma: A rare case report with oral involvement.

Transitional cell carcinoma also known as nonkeratinizing carcinoma (NKCa) of sinonasal tract comprises 15%-20% of malignant sinonasal carcinoma. We are reporting the case of 48-year-old male with a history of tooth extraction. A computed tomography was done which showed opacity in the right nasal cavity. Incisional biopsy was taken which revealed NKCa (transitional type). Very few reported cases of this type of malignancy were found. A possible reason could be multiple synonyms such as cylindrical cell carcinoma, Schneiderian carcinoma, and transitional cell carcinoma.

Vision loss after maxillary artery embolization secondary to compressive optic neuropathy.

The authors report a case of no light perception (NLP) vision in a patient with sinonasal melanoma after maxillary artery embolization secondary to presumptive compressive optic neuropathy. Two reports of NLP vision occurring after maxillary artery embolization are reported in the literature,, both occurring secondary to collateral blood flow to the ophthalmic artery resulting in central retinal artery occlusion. In the current case report, the presumed mechanism of vision loss is secondary to compressive optic neuropathy from local edema occurring after maxillary artery embolization.

Supraestructure maxillectomy and orbital exenteration for treatment of basal cell carcinoma of inferior eyelid: case report and review.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent type of skin cancer in humans, with cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation as an important risk factor for development of illness such as severe solar burns during childhood or adolescence. BCC is mainly located on sun-exposed sites, head and neck being the areas of more incidences; although nose, eyelids and periorbitary tissue are unfavorable due to cosmetic results that BCC involves. Tumors can be classified as nodular, superficial, micronodular, morphea variety, infiltrating, pigmented, metatypic and fibroepithelioma of Pinkus. Several

An atypical esthesioneuroblastoma of the inferior nasal cavity and maxillary sinus: report of a case.

Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare malignant tumor of the nasal cavity that originates from the olfactory epithelium. In this paper a very rare clinical presentation of this tumor is described. The tumor originated from the maxillary sinus and alveolar process, and was independent of the olfactory region. The patient was a 14-year-old girl presenting with facial swelling and nasal obstruction. Paranasal computed tomography showed a mass filling the right nasal cavity, infiltrating the alveolar process, eroding the anterior wall of the maxilla and invading the subcutaneous tissues of the cheek.
