Neuropathic pain is a common phenomenon that affects millions of people worldwide. Maxillofacial structures consist of various tissues that receive frequent stimulation during food digestion. The unique functions (masticatory process and facial expression) of the maxillofacial structure require the exquisite organization of both the peripheral and central nervous systems. Neuralgia is painful paroxysmal disorder of the head-neck region characterized by some commonly shared features such as the unilateral pain, transience and recurrence of attacks, and superficial and shock-like pain at a trigg

We present an unusual dentoalveolar fracture case who had displacement of teeth into maxillary sinus cavity. This patient was 15 years old. He had oral bleeding and lost teeth after falling from the top of a building. Examination of maxillofacial region showed that there were left maxillary teeth lost, alveolar fracture, gingival bleeding and laserations. Maxillofacial bones were found intact. Canine, both premolars and the first molar teeth on left maxilla were lost. Pantomographic evaluation viewed two teeth in the left maxillary sinus. In addition, computerized tomography clearly showed oro

INTRODUCTION: Frontal bone fractures show a low frequency of occurrence of about 5% to 15% of all maxillofacial fractures occurring due to high-velocity injuries such as in the case of road traffic accidents, sporting events, assaults. Successful surgical management revolves around the concept of minimizing cosmetic deformity, maintaining normal sinus function, avoidance of short and long-term complications. In this article, the authors report a case series of 24 cases of frontal bone fracture treated with various treatment modalities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 cases of frontal bon

INTRODUCTION: Zygomatic complex fracture is one of the most frequently occuring injuries to facial structures and often involves damage to the surrounding structures, including the orbital floor and/or medial orbital wall. These complicated injuries can cause both serious opthalmic and aesthetic complcations that make reconstructions more difficult.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22 year old male presented with facial asymmetry. On examination, there were neglected fractures of left orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex with various compications. We performed lateral orbitotomy, bone graft, medial and late

Nerve injury is a well-known complication following oral and maxillofacial surgery. Direct trauma, inflammation and infection are postoperative neural disturbances main causes. The most inflicted nerves associated with endosseous implant placement are those innervating the mandible: the inferior alveolar nerve, the mental nerve and the lingual nerve. Evaluation of the nerve injury characteristics and severity as early as possible has always imposed a great challenge for clinicians. We demonstrate a reliable yet simple way of dealing with this kind of problem in conjunction with comparing preop

The present report is an analysis of 93 patients (52 male; 41 female) treated in 1981-1983 for maxillofacial fractures sustained in bicycle accidents. These accidents accounted for 7.1% of all facial bone fractures treated during the same period. Most accidents were single vehicle accidents (88%) and took place during the summer months. Of the patients, 65% had mandibular fractures, 35% had midface fractures and 5% had fractures in both the middle and lower thirds of the face. Condylar fractures were by far the most common of the mandibular fractures (67%)--a result which differs from studies

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma presents with a myriad of complications, including functional disability and aesthetic compromise. Optimal treatment includes management of bone and soft tissue injuries along with dental rehabilitation. Prompt management, including open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) combined with immediate dental implant rehabilitation, facilitates both functional recovery and aesthetic restoration, thereby leading to improved quality of life.
METHODS: A total of 36 patients with maxillofacial bony trauma, along with non-restorable fractured, avulsed, or missing teet

PURPOSE: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of cancer in the head and neck. Squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa is an important part of it. The traditional surgical method leads to great injury and is accompanied by unacceptable scars. Previous improvements have been carried out in a single part. Natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES) system could perform "scarless surgery" and reduce complications. This technique was usually used for transvaginal or transanal specimen retrieval. There is great potential for oral and maxillofacial applications, e

Posttraumatic reconstruction of the neurocranium and viscerocranium is an essential part of modern oral and maxillofacial surgery, in addition to oncological surgery, surgery of congenital craniofacial deformities and dental surgery. Due to the complex anatomy of the facial skull and significant esthetic and functional demands on its reconstruction, reconstructive trauma surgery in this area places the highest demands on the surgeon. This is all the more true if definitive craniomaxillofacial surgical treatment can sometimes only be performed with considerable delays for the benefit of other l

BACKGROUND: Computed Tomography (CT) is the gold standard for diagnosing midfacial and mandibular fractures in emergency department (ED) patients. However, its increasing availability has led to more frequent use, resulting in higher healthcare costs and unnecessary radiation exposure. Although various clinical parameters can assist in diagnosis of maxillofacial fractures, none are reliable enough to rule them out individually. To support clinical decision-making, and to reduce unnecessary imaging, the REDUCTION studies developed four decision aids based on combinations of clinical parameters.

Introduction The management of maxillofacial trauma can be challenging in different unique clinical presentations. While maxillofacial fractures vary in location based on the mechanism of injury, the mandibular fracture is noted to be one of the most common facial fractures. The objective of this study was to explore the differences in injury patterns, outcomes, and demographics of isolated traumatic mandibular fractures between incarcerated and general populations. Methods This retrospective study analyzed consecutive patients presenting for trauma care from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2

BACKGROUND: Parafunctional oral habits are known to cause deleterious effects on maxillofacial structures. One such effect is traumatic injuries secondary to chewing inanimate objects like pencils. Following trauma, the lead of the pencil has been reported to embed in the soft tissue of the oral cavity, appearing as a grayish pigmentation (graphite tattoo). However, such pigmentation has never been reported in the hard tissue (teeth).

UNLABELLED: Orbital fractures are a common sequela of maxillofacial zone trauma. Rapid assessment and management are essential for successful reconstruction. The selected treatment method depends on fracture types, accompanied injuries, and intervention time. Implantable grafts used to be from autologous materials. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using the auricular conchal cartilage taken from the ear to repair orbital floor fractures in cases of minimal bone loss, less than (2×2) cm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective single-arm, nonrandomised clinical trial was conducted

The global pandemic of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) represents one of the greatest challenges to healthcare systems, and has forced medical specialties to rapidly adapt their approaches to patient care. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is considered particularly at risk of disease transmission due to aerosol generation during surgical interventions, patient proximity and operating environment. On day 2 (26th March, 2020) of when severe restrictions in population movement were instigated in the United Kingdom, we began a study to prospectively monitor the presentation and management of maxillof
