The Gladiator's Tears: Epiphora From Ancient Rome.

This article examines the clinical presentation of epiphora in Ancient Rome through the historico-medical analysis of the literary evidence provided by the verses by the poet Juvenal in his Satire VI. A gladiator's ophthalmological problem is interpreted as epiphora caused by traumatic injuries to the craniofacial region, compatible with those described in the palaeopathological literature. This analysis also focuses on the history of epiphora in antiquity and its treatment.

Learning Cognitive-Test-Based Interpretable Rules for Prediction and Early Diagnosis of Dementia Using Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND: Accurate, cheap, and easy to promote methods for dementia prediction and early diagnosis are urgently needed in low- and middle-income countries. Integrating various cognitive tests using machine learning provides promising solutions. However, most effective machine learning models are black-box models that are hard to understand for doctors and could hide potential biases and risks. OBJECTIVE: To apply cognitive-test-based machine learning models in practical dementia prediction and diagnosis by ensuring both interpretability and accuracy. METHODS: We design a framework adopting

[Importance of bilirubinemia in the daily management of neonatal jaundice in a university hospital group: problems and solutions].

Insufficient standardization and comparability of total bilirubin assays in neonates pose a problem for the interpretation of results, in application of national and international recommendations for the management of neonatal ejaundice. We present the results of a study carried out in the AP-HP Sorbonne Université group. Intra-laboratory and inter-technique variations were assessed on switchable control samples prepared by the Centre National de Référence en Hémobiologie Périnatale. Results were compared with those obtained using the connected validation technique. The results of the accuracy

Application of the EXPERT consultation system to accelerated laboratory testing and interpretation.

The EXPERT consultation system-building tool, a knowledge-based artificial intelligence program developed at Rutgers University, has been applied to the development of a laboratory consultation system facilitating sequential laboratory testing and interpretation. Depending on the results of a basic panel of laboratory tests, the system requests that specific secondary tests be performed. Input of these secondary findings can result in requests for tertiary testing, to complete the database necessary for interpretation. Interpretation of all results is based upon final inferences from the colle

Evaluation of an AI Medical Scribe After 236,153 Notes Generated Across Care Levels in a European Health System: Mixed Methods Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians spend a substantial share of their working hours on documentation, contributing to workflow inefficiencies, reduced patient-facing time, and increased burnout. Artificial intelligence (AI) medical scribes have emerged as a promising solution to reduce this burden, yet real-world evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, and data from European health systems are especially scarce. This evaluation combines 2 complementary data sources: objective editing metadata from 236,153 notes generated by 1295 clinicians, describing operational editing behavior within the AI medical

Descriptive analysis of interpreter service mode costs & usage in Northwestern Wisconsin pre and peri COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Interpreter service mode (in person, audio, or video) can impact patient experiences and engagement in the healthcare system, but clinics must balance quality with costs and volume to deliver services. Videoconferencing and telephone services provide lower cost options, effective where on site interpreters are scarce, or patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and/or interpreters are unable to visit healthcare centers. The COVID 19 pandemic generated these conditions in Northwest Wisconsin (NWWI). The objectives of our study were to describe visit characteristics for interp

WolfCareNet: Optimized CNN-LSTM architecture using Grey Wolf Optimizer for early disease detection in smart healthcare systems.

Early detection of brain tumors greatly helps improve patient prognosis and allows for early clinical intervention. Until now, traditional ML methods such as decision trees, KNN, and fuzzy clustering have demonstrated average results in accuracy, scalability, and interpretability-less so when applied to medical imaging data like MRI scans. Many times, these methods will have limited feature representation and go through inappropriate optimization, leading to poor generalization when encountered with real-world clinical settings. The current research work puts forth WolfCareNet, an innovative C

The perioperative microbiome of patients undergoing rectal cancer surgery: A pilot study.

AIM: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in health and disease, and its involvement in postoperative complications like anastomotic leakage (AL) is of growing interest. Despite substantial preclinical evidence linking microbiome alterations to surgical outcomes, human studies are scarce, particularly those exploring the perioperative dynamics of the gut microbiome beyond a single time point. This descriptive, hypothesis-generating pilot study aims to elucidate the perioperative changes in the faecal microbiome of patients undergoing rectal cancer surgery. METHOD: Seventeen patients from A
