Multidisciplinary research priorities for artificial intelligence in mental health: a call to action.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is anticipated to transform mental health care. However, the rapid research growth in this field has outpaced coordinated frameworks, leaving research efforts fragmented, standards inconsistent, and safeguards for safety and ethics largely absent. This Position Paper outlines a coordinated roadmap to guide the responsible evaluation and implementation of AI in mental health, structured across four overarching priority domains that define near-term actions and longer-term strategic goals. Domain 1 (Strengthen safety and evidence standards) addresses defic

Associations of dynamic versus static disability with experiences of stigma and mental health.

BACKGROUND: Prior research recognizes that the visibility of an individual's disability is salient to understanding experiences, such that greater visibility is associated with higher levels of stigma and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yet, the dynamicity of a disability, defined as the extent to which severity of an impairment fluctuates, has been relatively understudied. We conducted the first known quantitative examination of dynamicity. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that mental health and chronic illnesses would be most frequently characterized as dynamic. We also expected that dynamic

Prevalence and relevance of neurocognitive challenges in patients admitted to a secondary mental health outpatient clinic.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge on factors affecting mental health is pivotal to offer the appropriate help for patients referred to mental health services. Neurocognitive challenges affect a person's capacity to cope in life. If underlying issues with cognitive functioning rather than psychiatric pathology cause suffering and failure to function, other measures than merely psychiatric treatment may be needed. However, there is a lack of knowledge on occurrence of neurocognitive challenges in the general psychiatric outpatient population. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study included 283 outpatients in a Co

LBTQ parents' bonding experiences after complicated births: managing minority stress and traumatic experiences.

BACKGROUND: Birth complications increase the risk of birth injuries and neonatal complications, as well as the risk of experiencing childbirth as a trauma. This, in turn, increases the risk of postpartum mental ill-health and may affect early bonding with the baby. Birth complications add additional stress on lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer (LBTQ) parents, as they also must navigate hetero- and cisnormative assumptions, being subject to othering, and negative attitudes from healthcare staff. AIM: To explore LBTQ parents' experiences of bonding with their child following a complicated

Moral injury and associated context, contributors and consequences within mental healthcare professionals: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the contributory factors as well as consequences of moral injury amongst healthcare workers within mental healthcare settings. METHODS: Several databases were searched for relevant studies from database inception until May 2023. Keywords and concepts included moral injury and distress in mental healthcare and psychiatry. We identified 961 studies, of which 48 were assessed for eligibility. Eventually, 35 studies were included in the review. Papers were selected for inclusion if 1) they included mental healthcare professionals (MHP) regardless of practice setti

Transforming psychology education to include global mental health.

In recent years, the reality of global migration has brought the lack of understanding of mental health needs across different cultures into sharp focus. Psychology programs are not up to date on global issues and are often experienced as inadequate in preparing graduates to meet the challenges of society today. The field of education and training in psychology has hardly evolved since the last two decades. On the other hand, the mental health needs arising locally and globally require a knowledge base and a set of skills future psychologists need to have in order to be able to work and grow p

Influence of schizophrenia diagnosis on providers' practice decisions.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with schizophrenia often receive suboptimal physical health care, but the reasons are poorly understood. Vignettes have been used to examine how a patient's race, gender, or physical health influences a provider's practice; in this study, we used vignettes to examine the effect of a mental health diagnosis (schizophrenia) on providers' clinical expectations and decision making regarding physical health care. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was administered from August 2011 to April 2012 to 275 primary care and mental health providers in 5 US Department of Veterans Affairs

Preventive care at home for very preterm infants improves infant and caregiver outcomes at 2 years.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of preventive care at home on child development and primary caregiver mental health at 2 years of age. METHODS: A total of 120 very preterm infants (<30 weeks) were assigned randomly to intervention (n = 61) or control (n = 59) groups. The intervention group received the preventive care program (9 home visits over the first year from a physiotherapist and a psychologist, focusing on the parent-infant relationship, the parents' mental health, and the infant's development); and the control group received standard care. Delusions related to infant and their association with mother-infant interactions in postpartum psychotic disorders.

The relationship between mother infant interactions and psychopathology in postpartum psychotic disorders has been recognised as being clinically important, however data in the field is sparse. The current study had two aims--firstly, to study the prevalence and nature of delusions towards the infant among mothers with postpartum onset severe mental illness and secondly, to study the association between delusional symptoms towards the infant and mother infant interactions. 108 consecutive women with onset of severe mental illness in the postpartum, who were admitted to an inpatient psychiatric

[Evaluation of the thyroid function in healthy aged patients residing in 2 geriatric institutions].

Thyroid function assessment in elderly inpatients. It is not well known whether normal ageing might lead to an impairment of thyroid function. We evaluated 297 elderly inmates in two geriatric institutions. After having excluded from the study those who were affected by chronic hepatic or renal disease, were under pharmacologic treatment or had suffered from acute ailments during the previous two months, we assessed thyroid function by determining circulating T4, T3, rT3, FT4, FT3 and TSH in 130 apparently healthy subjects. They could be divided into three groups composed of patients mentally

Gender Differences in Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Mild to Moderate Alzheimer's Disease Patients Undergoing Switch of Cholinesterase Inhibitors: A Post Hoc Analysis of the EVOLUTION Study.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline, often associated with Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (ChEi) may attenuate cognitive decline and mitigate BPSD. The EVOLUTION group found that the switch from oral ChEi to transdermal rivastigmine patch formulation resulted in improvement/stabilization in the frequency of clinically relevant BPSD, but gender-specific subgroup analyses were not reported. METHODS: Participants underwent Neuropsychiatric Inventory to assess the frequency and severity o

Forensic and medical legal issues in addiction psychiatry.

There is a broad range of forensic issues in addiction psychiatry. For many psychiatrists, what is most challenging about addressing these issues is their origin in the law, which is a system and a way of thinking that may feel foreign to the medical practitioner. To address forensic issues, addiction psychiatrists should learn and understand the specific legal questions that arise in each forensic context. They should become familiar with the relevant definitions, criteria, and legal requirements that apply in each specific area of their practice, rather than assume that clinical definitions

Doctor-patient dialogue--basic aspect of medical consultation.

Family medicine is the specialty that provides ongoing primary medical care and improves the health status of the individual, of the family and of the community through preventive, educational, therapeutic and rehabilitation measures. The family doctor often makes the interdisciplinary synthesis, in a flexible manner, either alone or in most cases with interdisciplinary consultation. In the latter case, the family doctor initiates the team work and makes the final evaluation by using the longitudinal follow-up of the disease. The doctor-patient encounter represents the "confrontation" with the

Understanding Appropriation of Digital Self-Monitoring Tools in Mental Health Care: Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Digital self-monitoring tools, such as the experience sampling method (ESM), enable individuals to collect detailed information about their mental health and daily life context and may help guide and support person-centered mental health care. However, similar to many digital interventions, the ESM struggles to move from research to clinical integration. To guide the implementation of self-monitoring tools in mental health care, it is important to understand why and how clinicians and clients adopted, adapted, and incorporated these tools in practice. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, this st
