Imaging of the Retroperitoneum.

The retroperitoneum, a complex abdominal compartment encompassing the anterior and posterior pararenal spaces, perirenal spaces, and great vessel space, is involved by both organ-based and non-organ-based pathologies. Imaging characteristics are invaluable in localizing pathologies to the either the retroperitoneum or one of its organs. A wide array of primary and metastatic neoplasms, including those of mesodermal, neurogenic, germ cell, sex cord-stromal, and lymphoid origin, may arise in this region. Frequently encountered non-neoplastic entities include fluid collections and retroperitoneal…

Benign ureteral polyps causing upper urinary tract obstruction.

Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps are benign, mesodermal neoplasms that can cause upper urinary tract obstruction. The preoperative diagnosis of this disease is challenging, but multidetector computed tomography (CT), particularly CT urography in the excretory phase, can be used to detect the features of ureteral polyps. We illustrated a case preoperatively diagnosed as upper ureteral tract obstruction due to ureteral tumor based on clinical presentation and CT imaging. However, the histopathological report revealed ureteral fibroepithelial polyps. Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps should be consi…

Fibroepithelial Polyp Originating from the Nasal Septum.

Fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) is a rare clinical condition of mesodermal origin, covered usually by squamous epithelium, originating most frequently from the skin, genitourinary and lower respiratory tract. Upper airway FEP is a rare lesion found usually in the pharynx and larynx. Only three cases of FEP arising from the nasal mucosa were reported in the world literature, all from the inferior nasal turbinate. In this paper, we describe the first case in the literature of a FEP originating from the nasal septum in a patient suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis. In addition, we discussed th…

Generation of the induced pluripotent stem cell line from a patient with autosomal recessive ABCA4-mediated Stargardt Macular Dystrophy.

We report the generation of the human iPSC line LEIi007-A from a patient with autosomal recessive Stargardt disease caused by compound heterozygous mutations in the ABCA4 gene (c.[5461-10 T > C];[4139C > T]). Reprogramming of patient dermal fibroblasts was performed using episomal plasmids containing OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, L-MYC, LIN28, shRNA for p53 and mir302/367 microRNA to establish the clonal iPSC line LEIl007-A. LEIl007-A displayed normal pluripotent stem cell colony morphology, expressed pluripotent stem cell markers, displayed a normal karyotype and differentiated into ectodermal, mesoderma…

Neurosurgical management and pathology of lumbosacral lipomas with tethered cord.

Lumbosacral lipomas are the most common form of occult spinal dysraphism. The development of lumbosacral lipomas is from the premature disjunction of the neural tube from the surrounding ectoderm, leaving the neural plate open posteriorly and allowing for the infiltration of mesodermal tissue, including fatty tissue. Since lumbosacral lipomas are a common cause of spinal cord tethering that can lead to progressive neurological deficits, prophylactic neurosurgery for lumbosacral lipomas, including untethering of the spinal cord, is recommended. We briefly review the embryology, classification, …

Laparoscopic Anderson-Hynes procedure as a treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction caused by fibroepithelial polyp.

Fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are rare benign ureteral neoplasms of mesodermal origin. As an intrinsic cause of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) they are very uncommon. Excretory urography and diuretic renography used by many urologists to diagnose a UPJO may not detect the ureteral polyp. We present a case of ureteropelvic junction obstruction caused by a fibroepithelial polyp, which was not diagnosed preoperatively. The patient underwent successful laparoscopic excision of the polyp with Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty. We believe that laparoscopy is a useful, minimally invasive operativ…

[Bilateral ureteral polyps in children: a case report].

Fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter is a benign tumor of mesodermal origin that rarely occurs in children. The most common presenting symptoms are hematuria and flank pain by obstruction of the urinary tract. The etiology of this tumor is still not clear. It occurs more frequently in boys and often arises in the proximal ureter and the ureteropelvic junction. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We present here the case of a 11-year-old boy who had fibroepithelial polyps as the cause of the left flank ureteropelvic junction obstruction at pyeloplasty, and had the same condition on the righ…

Sacrococcygeal teratoma in the newborn: a case study of prenatal management and clinical intervention.

Sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCTs) are the most common germinal cell neoplasms of the fetus and neonate. They originate during embryonic development when the primitive streak fails to differentiate among mesodermal, ectodermal, and endodermal tissues in the embryonic disc. This article discusses the fetal pathophysiology of SCTs and the impact of the condition on the newborn. Fetal SCTs can have life-threatening physiologic effects--such as premature labor, dystocia, and high-output cardiac failure--if not managed appropriately. Clinical manifestations, prenatal diagnosis, therapeutic approaches …

[A rare case of popliteal pterygium syndrome].

The PPS (Popliteal Pterygium Syndrome) is a rare malformative syndrome, with autosomal dominant inheritance and variable penetrance, but always reduced. Sporadic cases also are reported. The ethiopatogenesis is unknown. The principal hypothesis is a arrest of development of parts based upon an imbalance between mesodermal migration and ectodermal proliferation. It dont appear relationships with race or sex. It is a syndrome of three polarity: orofacial, muscles-skeletonlike, genito-urinary. The Authors report a case and show the therapeutic procedures and the future program. The diagnosis, esp…

[Triad syndrome in the neonatal period: an anatomoclinical study of 11 cases].

Eleven newborn children with clinical and anatomic characteristics of Prune-Belly syndrome were studied. This establish an approximate incidence of 1:28,000 newborns. All these children died in the first-days of life, nine of them as a result of pulmonary hypoplasia secondary olygohydiamnios. All of them except one had urinary tract dilatation and in four anatomic stenosis of urethra was found as the cause of obstruction. These findings support mechanical theory more than a primary mesodermic disorder as a pathogenic mechanism. All this, together with establishment of an early prenatal diagnos…

FOXK1 regulates Wnt signalling to promote cardiogenesis.

AIMS: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common genetic birth defect, which has considerable morbidity and mortality. We focused on deciphering key regulators that govern cardiac progenitors and cardiogenesis. FOXK1 is a forkhead/winged helix transcription factor known to regulate cell cycle kinetics and is restricted to mesodermal progenitors, somites, and heart. In the present study, we define an essential role for FOXK1 during cardiovascular development. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the mouse embryoid body system to differentiate control and Foxk1 KO embryonic stem cells into mesod…

Types and Frequency of Neural Elements in Mature Ovarian Teratomas: An 11-Year Study from Rural India.

INTRODUCTION: Teratomas are those tumors which are derived from the totipotent cells. They may manifest at any site. Ovary is the most common site for teratomas. Ovarian teratomas may be immature and mature depending on the elements they harbor. Mature ovarian teratomas may contain ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. Ectoderm mainly comprises the skin and its adnexa, followed by neural tissue, whereas mesodermal elements are blood vessels, adipose tissue, cartilage, and hematopoietic tissue, similarly, endoderm consists of respiratory tissue, thyroid gland, and gastrointestinal tissue. MATERIAL…

Hyperemesis Gravidarum and the Potential for Cancer: A Longitudinal Cohort Study over Three Decades.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to assess whether hyperemesis gravidarum is associated with the risk of endodermal, mesodermal, and ectodermal human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) receptor+ cancer in women. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal cohort study of 1,343,040 women who were pregnant between 1989 and 2019 in Quebec, Canada. We identified women with and without hyperemesis gravidarum and followed them over time to capture incident cancers, grouped by embryonic germ cell layer of origin and organ hCG receptor positivity. We used time-varying Cox regression to model hazard ratios (HR) and 9…

Xenopus Smad8 acts downstream of BMP-4 to modulate its activity during vertebrate embryonic patterning.

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) participate in the development of nearly all organs and tissues. BMP signaling is mediated by specific Sm … induction in ectodermal explants. Furthermore, Smad8 can block BMP-4-mediated induction of ventral mesoderm-specific gene expression in ectodermal explants. Overexpression of Smad8 within dorsal cells, however, causes patterning defects that are distinct from those reported in BMP-4-deficient embryos, suggesting that Smad8 may interact with additional sig …

Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma of the Mandible: A Case Report.

Benign osseous tumors of mesodermal origin that are included within the group of fibro-osseous lesions include cemento-ossifying fibromas (COFs). The fibrocellular component of these diseases originates from the periodontal ligament, which deposits bone and cementum encased in fibrous tissue. It typically appears in the mandible and presents as a solitary, nonaggressive, slowly developing, asymptomatic, expansile lesion, rarely occurring in the maxilla. The only intervention that proved to be successful in producing excellent outcomes and that may be regarded as a final therapeutic option is t…

Nasal Myiasis in a Female with Christ-Siemens-Touraine Syndrome: A Case Report.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare disease that belongs to a diverse group of inherited monogenic disorders involving defects in one or more ectodermally or mesodermally derived tissues. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, also known as Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome is a type of ectodermal dysplasia characterized by a triad of anhidrosis, dysodontia, and hypotrichiasis. The most prevalent method of transmission is X-linked recessive, manifesting fully in men and only partially in female carrier heterozygotes. Atrophic rhinitis and nasal myiasis are rare characteristics of this condition. We here…

Congenital Curved Nail of the Fourth Toe Associated with Oral Disorders.

Congenital curved nail of the fourth toe represents an unusual deformity in which the nail of the fourth toe curves in a plantar direction. It is unknown why only this toe is affected; however, the initial descriptions suggest that this is a mesodermal defect. We describe a case of congenital curved nail of the fourth toe associated with bifid uvula. There are only 2 reports mentioning the association of this nail abnormality with cleft palate and/or lip. In our patient, there was an association with bifid uvula that is considered a minor form of palatine fissure. There seems to be an associat…

Congenital huge submandibular and neck teratoid cyst in newborn.

Head and neck teratoid cysts are the least common congenital cysts in the head and neck region, accounting for approximately 1.8% of all dermoid cysts. Teratoid cysts exhibiting mesodermal elements may be lined by gastric, intestinal, respiratory, squamous, or cilitated epithelium. We present a case of huge submandibular and neck teratoid cyst in newborn with airway obstruction and feeding difficulty. Surgical extirpation is the treatment of choice. However, before operation, some other cystic diseases in the head and neck region needs to be excluded. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was necessar…

Bilateral congenital lacrimal fistulas in an adult as part of ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome: A rare anomaly.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia and clefting syndrome or "Lobster claw" deformity is a rare congenital anomaly that affects tissues of ectodermal and mesodermal origin. Nasolacrimal duct (NLD) obstruction with or without atresia of lacrimal passage is a common finding of such a syndrome. The authors report here even a rarer presentation of the syndrome which manifested as bilateral NLD obstruction and lacrimal fistula along with cleft lip and palate, syndactyly affecting all four limbs, mild mental retardation, otitis media, and sinusitis. Lacrimal duct obstruction and fistula were managed s…
