Metallic nanoparticles are increasingly present in our environment, raising concerns on their interactions with living organisms and potential toxicity. Indeed, metallic nanoparticles release metal ions that can be toxic, bioessential, therapeutically active, or combine several of these features. However, human cell responses to different metallic nanoparticles and ions have rarely been compared so far. We propose here a meta-analysis of the transcriptomic responses of human cells to nanoparticles and ions of various metals (titanium, iron, copper, zinc, silver, cadmium, platinum, gold), in or…

The health effects of prolonged exposure to embedded metal fragments, such as those found in shrapnel wounds sustained by an increasing number of military personnel, are not well known. As part of a large collaborative effort to expand this knowledge, we use an animal model of shrapnel wounds originally developed to investigate effects of embedded depleted uranium to investigate effects of military-relevant metals tungsten, nickel, cobalt, iron, copper, aluminum, lead, and depleted uranium compared to an inert control, tantalum. Rats are surgically implanted with pellets of one of the metals o…

BACKGROUND The case of a patient with bilateral renal cancers diagnosed at 94 and 120 months after metal-on-metal hip placement may serve as a warning. It suggests that there may be a need for kidney echography observation of patients with similar types of prostheses. CASE REPORT A 61-year-old woman received a metal-on-metal hip prosthesis for degenerative arthritis in January 2007. In November 2014, after bleeding from the renal tract, she was diagnosed with clear cell carcinoma of the right kidney. When she returned to her orthopaedic surgeon 1 year later, a blood test showed a serum cobalt

BACKGROUND: The toxicity of released metallic particles generated in metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) using cobalt chromium (CoCr) has raised concerns regarding their safety amongst both surgeons and the public. Soft tissue changes such as pseudotumours and metallosis have been widely observed following the use of these implants, which release metallic by-products due to both wear and corrosion. Although activated fibroblasts, the dominant cell type in soft tissues, have been linked to many diseases, the role of synovial fibroblasts in the adverse reactions caused by CoCr impl

Revision of large-diameter, monoblock acetabular components for both hip resurfacing arthroplasty and metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) is correlated to a high amount of complications. For this reason, performing a limited revision by conversion to a dual mobility (DM) without acetabular component exchange has been proposed in order to limit these complications. Although DM bearing offers an easy solution avoiding the intraoperative and time-associated complications, concern about polyethylene wear and stability remains due to the difference regarding the design, the coverage a

BACKGROUND: High failure rates of metal-on-metal (MoM) hip implants prompted regulatory authorities to issue worldwide safety alerts. Circulating cobalt from these implants causes rare but fatal autopsy-diagnosed cardiotoxicity. There is concern that milder cardiotoxicity may be common and underrecognized. Although blood metal ion levels are easily measured and can be used to track local toxicity, there are no noninvasive tests for organ deposition. We sought to detect correlation between blood metal ions and a comprehensive panel of established markers of early cardiotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: The role of radiographs in the follow-up of patients with metal-on-metal hip resurfacing (MoMHR) implants is unclear. We investigated whether a combination of patient and radiographic factors predicted MoMHRs with evidence of a pseudotumor.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective single-center case-control study of 384 MoMHRs. The pseudotumor group of 130 hips all had evidence of a symptomatic pseudotumor on cross-sectional imaging, with the diagnosis confirmed at revision. The nonpseudotumor group of 254 hips (a subgroup of these hips were previously reported on) all had normal fin

BACKGROUND: Data on the association between stem type and metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) performance are limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of stem type on the prevalence of osteolysis and radiolucency, blood metal ion levels, and functional outcomes in patients with Articular Surface Replacement THA (ASR XL), a type of MoM THA.
METHODS: We analyzed 539 unilateral MoM THAs coupled with Summit (48%), Corail (35%), or S-ROM (17%) hip stems at a mean follow-up of 6.4 years. Fifty-four percent of the patients were male, and the mean age was 60 years. We

This technique introduces a system of abutments with a pressure or friction fitting to retain implant-supported prostheses. The system combines the chief advantages of cement and screw-retained prostheses, which are passively fit and easily removed from the mouth, respectively. This system provides an alternative to conventional immediate loading systems, since it allows easier adjustment and modeling of the prosthesis with a snap-on connection and easier removal from the implants.

INTRODUCTION: Serum metal ions are part of the regular follow-up routine of patients with metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasties (MoM-THA). Increased cobalt levels have been suggested to indicate implant failure and corrosion.
QUESTIONS: (1) Is there a correlation between the size of the osteolysis measured on a CT scan and metal ion levels? (2) Can metal ion levels predict the presence of osteolysis in MoM-THA? (3) Are cobalt and chromium serum levels or the cobalt-chromium-ratio diagnostic for osteolysis?
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT scans of patients (n = 75) with a unilateral MoM-THA (Birm

The potential advantages of contemporary MoM THA implants include less volumetric wear with subsequent reduction of polyethylene wear-induced osteolysis and greater component stability with use of large-diameter femoral heads. However, there have been concerns regarding significantly elevated revision rates in MoM THA due to MoM-related complications such as adverse local tissue reaction (pseudotumour) formation. The increased failure rate in MoM hip arthroplasty is associated with the generation of biologically active, nanometer sized metal particles from the MoM bearing surfaces and taper ju

Metal hexacyanoferrates are very efficient sorbents for the recovery of alkali and base metal ions (including radionuclides such as Cs). Generally produced by the direct reaction of metal salts with potassium hexacyanoferrate (the precursors), they are characterized by ion-exchange and structural properties that make then particularly selective for Cs(I), Rb(I) and Tl(I) recovery (based on their hydrated ionic radius consistent with the size of the ion-exchanger cage), though they can bind also base metals. The major drawback of these materials is associated to their nanometer or micrometer si…

BACKGROUND: Use of large-diameter metal-on-metal (MoM) articulations in THA increased, at least in part, because of the possibility of achieving improved joint stability and excellent wear characteristics in vitro. However, there have been subsequent concerning reports with adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMD), pseudotumors, and systemic complications related to metal ions.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to determine at a minimum of 2 years' followup (1) the proportion of patients who experienced a dislocation; (2) the short-term survivorship obtained with these implant

An innovative wet-treatment with Na2 S transforms two indium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a series of porous inorganic sorbents. These MOF-templated materials display remarkable affinity for heavy metals with saturation occurring in less than 1 h. The saturation capacity for Hg(II) exceeds 2 g g(-1) , more than doubling the best thiol-functionalized sorbents in the literature.

The purpose of the study was to determine the natural history of pseudotumors following metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (THA) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Initial MRI was conducted at a mean of 36months postoperatively. Follow-up MRI was performed at a mean of 20months after the detection of 24 asymptomatic pseudotumors. Pseudotumor size was determined on MRI. The mean pseudotumor size changed from 729mm(2) to 877mm(2). Pseudotumors increased in size in eight and decreased in six. Ten hips showed no changes. The bigger the pseudotumor size, the more likely the size would incre

BACKGROUND: The key to successful management of patients with metal-on-metal (MOM) THAs is to diagnose adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) early. ALTRs have been described in asymptomatic patients with resurfacing arthroplasties. Whether this concerning finding applies to modular MOM THAs is unknown.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We (1) determined the prevalence of ALTRs in asymptomatic patients with modular MOM THAs, (2) described any differences in the appearance of these lesions between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, and (3) analyzed potential predictive factors for any associations with
