The aim of the current work was to investigate the effects of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and monomethyl mercury (MeHg) on hepatocytes from tropical fish Hypostomus commersoni (cascudo). In order to verify DDT and MeHg impacts on the redox milieu, cells were exposed for 4 days to 50 nM of DDT, 0.25 and 2.5 microM of MeHg and to a combination of 50 nM of DDT and 0.25 microM of MeHg. Energetics and vibrational analysis study of six isomers of methyl salicylate in their singlet ground state and first excited triple state is put forward in this work at the density functional theory level and large basis sets. The IR and Raman spectra of methyl salicylate (MS) were recorded and analysed. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum was recorded in silver colloid. The vibrational wave numbers of the compound have been computed using the Hartree-Fock/6-31G* basis and compared with the experimental values. Reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultra violet detection (UV) was optimised for separation and quantification of methyl mercury in coastal sediment and fish samples. Two workers were poisoned following exposure to methyl iodide with inadequate protective devices. Their cases are presented together with a review of literature. The use of glutathione glycoside (GSH-glyc), a compound newly synthesized in our laboratory, was highly effective in raising cellular GSH levels both in vitro and in vivo. Based on mass spectrometry and 1H NMR data, the structure of GSH-glyc was determined to be that of an S-glycoside. Rapid GSH uptake was observed by confocal microscopy in both A549 cells and mouse astrocytes following incubation with GSH-glyc.
