We present two instances of pancytopenia in kidney transplant patients associated with a course of OKT3 therapy. In one case, OKT3 was used prophylactically, in the other therapeutically to treat biopsy-proved rejection. They both occurred in the setting of multi-drug immunosuppression, including Minnesota anti-lymphocyte globulin, and recovered with supportive therapy. Previous antihypertensive medication, antibiotics, and azathioprine were restarted without hematologic sequelae. Evidence implicating OKT3, and resultant gamma-interferon-induced marrow suppression is discussed.

The first open heart operation ever performed was by Clarence Dennis on April 5, 1951, at the University of Minnesota. For several years he had worked developing a heart-lung machine. The operation was on a young girl considered to have an ostium secundum atrial septal defect, but at the procedure a large ostium primum was identified instead. It could not be repaired, and the child died. The anatomic details of this heart have not been previously presented. For historical purposes, the clinical history, intraoperative course, and pathologic details will be discussed and shown.

Depression was evaluated in 10 patients before and after therapeutic mesothalamic brain stimulation for chronic pain. Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory T scores for depression were high in all patients before stimulation. Scores were decreased in 8 of 10 patients with chronic deep brain stimulation, three of whom returned to normal. Pain relief was good to excellent in 9 of 10 patients. It is concluded that depression is secondary to pain or pain-inducing factors which implicate the catecholamine and serotonergic systems.

Of 264 patients undergoing pulmonary valvotomy for pulmonary stenosis or atresia at the University of Minnesota, 23 had a right-to-left shunt preoperatively. In none was the atrial communication closed at the time of pulmonary valvotomy. At postoperative cardiac catheterization, no atrial level shunt was found in 19, indicating that effective closure of the communication had occurred. In the remaining 4, a right-to-left shunt persisted despite adequate relief of the stenosis. Each of the 4 has undergone subsequent closure of the atrial septal communication without difficulty.

Endoscopically superimposed Amplatzer (St. Jude Medical, St. Paul, Minnesota, United States) septal occluder plug was successfully used in the treatment of septic right main bronchus fistula having developed after extrapleural pneumonectomy and heated chemotherapy in two patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. In the first case the method was curative and in the other Amplatzer served as temporary bridging allowing rehabilitation from empyema and sepsis. After 4.5 and 4.2 years both patients are alive with no sign of relapse of mesothelioma or infection.

Recently, a set of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales for the diagnosis of personality disorders have attracted research attention. As personality disorders are thought to represent long-standing trait disturbances, any measure of these disorders should be stable over time and relatively free from state influences. This study investigated the stability of the MMPI scales in 67 subjects across a brief inpatient treatment for substance abuse. The results indicated high levels of stability across the 3-week treatment period.

The tube-system of the biopump equipment (Bio-medicus, Minnesota/USA) is an essential part of the veno-venous bypass during liver-grafting. In this system turbulences of the blood flow have be avoided because of the unability of heparinization. Any conjunctions parts of the system are areas of potential flow-changes. The number of junctions in the tube-system increase the risk of blood clotting with consecutive intraoperative complications by embolisms. This paper describes a new tube-system with integrated lines for pressure measurements in order to minimize these problems.
