The prevalence of nursing staff stress on adult acute psychiatric in-patient wards. A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about recent changes in acute in-patient mental health care environments have led to fears about staff stress and poor morale in acute in-patient mental health care staff. AIM: To review the prevalence of low staff morale, stress, burnout, job satisfaction and psychological well-being amongst staff working in in-patient psychiatric wards. METHOD: Systematic review. RESULTS: Of 34 mental health studies identified, 13 were specific to acute in-patient settings, and 21 were specific to other non-specified ward-based samples. Most studies did not find very high levels of st…

Gendered forms of intergenerational solidarity in the COVID-19 pandemic: an intersectional perspective on the public renegotiation of a moral resource for future health crises in Germany.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, 'intergenerational solidarity' became a prominent buzzword in public debates. At the same time, a resurge of ageist stereotypes could be observed that proved to be a constant structuring element in the public renegotiation of intergenerational solidarity. Despite a growing body of research indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic also had a significant impact on inequalities related to other social categories, such as gender, the interplay between appeals for intergenerational solidarity and other social inequalities in public debates has received limited

How leader greed relates to employee unethical behavior: a moderated mediation model of leader self-serving behavior and employee moral attentiveness.

INTRODUCTION: Leader greed has potentially important implications for employee behavior, yet its relationship with employee unethical behavior and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates how leader greed is associated with employee unethical behavior by examining the mediating role of leader self-serving behavior and the moderating role of employee moral attentiveness. METHODS: We conducted two three-wave, time-lagged studies to test our hypotheses. Study 1 used multisource data from 231 employees nested within 62 leaders to examine the mediating role of leader self-

Perceived sustainability authenticity as a place-based psychological cue: moral emotions, psychological ownership, and responsible environmental cooperation in nature-based accommodation.

Tourism sustainability partly depends on guests' voluntary cooperation. However, how the perceived authenticity of place-based environmental practices relates to discretionary conduct during an accommodation stay remains insufficiently understood. Here, we examined whether perceived sustainability authenticity was associated with self-reported responsible environmental cooperation through moral emotions and psychological ownership and whether these indirect associations varied with green skepticism. We surveyed 337 guests staying in rural nature-based accommodation in Yangshuo, China. Covarian

How far does the moral dilemma go? Neural and autonomic correlates contribute to explain emotional conflict and empathy behavior in Sophie's Choice.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined EEG and autonomic responses during an emotionally intense and morally paradoxical film scene from Sophie's Choice. METHODS: The cinematic content was segmented into 56 segments based on characters' facial expressions and categorized by emotional valence. EEG and autonomic analyses were conducted across the full scene and by character. RESULTS: Results showed increased delta activity in left frontal areas during morally ambiguous segments, indicating anticipatory control; theta in left temporoparietal regions reflected empathic engagement with the narrative;

Contradictory experiences of problematic pornography use in China: A qualitative study of multi-layered stigma within a morally restrictive socio-cultural context.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic pornography use (PPU) has received growing scholarly attention; however, much of the existing research has been conducted in Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic (WEIRD) sociocultural contexts and may not fully capture how sociocultural factors can shape experiences of PPU in contexts characterized by stronger moral regulation surrounding sexuality. This study explored the lived experiences of individuals with PPU in China and examined how multi-layered stigma processes might have shaped PPU-related experience. DESIGN: A qualitative study usi

'If we give false hope, we just harm patients': Researchers' experiences of moral responsibility and care in translational neurodegenerative disease research.

The translation of basic neurodegenerative disease research into early-phase human studies raises ethical questions that extend beyond traditional assessments of risk and benefit. This study explores how researchers themselves experience and reason about these ethical challenges in their everyday work. Using an empirical bioethics approach, we analyse four focus group discussions with researchers from several European countries. The findings reveal interconnected ethical tensions related to uncertainty in translation, responsibility for future patient safety, pressures shaping scientific commu

Associations among combat exposure, adverse childhood experiences, moral injury, and posttraumatic growth in a large cohort of post-9/11 veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Post-9/11 veterans experienced more deployments, combat exposure, and disability than earlier military cohorts. Those in the military are also more likely to have experienced adverse childhood experiences. Despite these traumatic exposures, a substantial number of veterans report experiencing personal growth, development, and maturity from their military service. METHOD: This longitudinal survey study (n = 5,245) examined the degree to which posttraumatic growth (PTG) was present among post-9/11 veterans. Several components of PTG were examined, including relating to others, seeing

Pre-deployment aggressiveness, combat exposure and moral injury as contributors to posttraumatic stress symptoms among combatants: A two-year prospective study.

Combatants who are exposed to events which transgress deeply held moral beliefs might face lasting psychopathological outcomes such as Moral Injury (MI) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, insight about pre-deployment personality factors which might facilitate the MI process and its negative consequences is sparse. In this prospective study, we examined pre-deployment aggressiveness as a possible predictor of exposure to combat and potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), trauma-related guilt and shame and PTSS among Israeli active-duty combatants. A sample of 335 active-du

Civilian moral injury: associations with trauma type and high-frequency heart rate variability in two trauma-exposed community-based samples.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury exposure (MIE) and distress (MID) may indirectly affect the relationship between trauma exposure and alterations in autonomic regulation [assessed via high-frequency heart rate variability (hfHRV)] in civilians, but this has not been tested in prior research. We conducted two exploratory studies to examine trauma types' associations with MIE and MID among civilian medical patients (Study 1) and explore how these facets may indirectly affect the relationship between trauma type and hfHRV among civilians seeking mental health services (Study 2). METHODS: Participants re

Disruption on right temporoparietal junction with transcranial magnetic stimulation affects moral judgment: No difference between first- and third-personal narration with TMS.

Brain imaging studies have observed that the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) was involved in the information processing of moral judgments and in the understanding of the beliefs/intentions of other people. However, most of these studies used moral stories in the third-person point of view. This study aimed to investigate to what extent the disruption of rTPJ affected moral judgments with stories in first-person narration by non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The study hypothesized that, first, TMS would disrupt moral judgment, causing one to neglect the beliefs of per

The prominent impact of pre-deployment aggression on moral injury outcomes post-discharge: a six-year longitudinal study of former Israeli combatants.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a potential clinical problem associated with distress following exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). While previous studies have linked PMIEs to MI outcomes such as shame and trust violation, few have examined the role of pre-enlistment personality traits in predicting MI. This study investigates whether pre-deployment aggression contributes to MI outcomes among recently discharged Israeli combat veterans, both directly and indirectly, through exposure to PMIEs. DESIGN: A six-year longitudinal study. METHODS: 169 Israeli combat veterans w

Violence, Stigma, and Moral Injury in Nursing During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Analysis From 18 Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Workplace violence against nurses and midwives intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, exposing and amplifying longstanding structural marginalization in health systems across Latin America. This study analyzes how different forms of violence were experienced and described by nursing professionals during this period. A secondary qualitative analysis was conducted using text-based responses from an international online survey developed by the Global Consortium, which included 3860 nurses and midwives from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Data were examined through Descending Hierarc

Struggling to cope in an unknown realm: a qualitative study of moral resilience in frontline healthcare professionals in Swedish hospital wards during a pandemic crisis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the process of moral resilience among frontline healthcare professionals. By delving into experiences of handling moral challenges during a pandemic crisis, we aimed to understand dimensions of moral resilience, affecting factors and consequences. This understanding can inform the implementation of interventions to support healthcare professionals' well-being and ability to deliver high-quality care, under both routine and extreme conditions. DESIGN: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted using grounded theory methodology. Data were collected ret

Moral disengagement in psychiatric inpatient care for individuals who engage in self-injury: a conceptual framework for understanding staff responses and patient experiences.

Psychiatric inpatient care for individuals who engage in self-injury involves tensions between preventing harm, respecting autonomy, sustaining relational care, and managing organizational demands. Staff may experience emotional burden and moral distress, while patients may experience care as invalidating, coercive, or insufficiently responsive to their needs. This article develops a theory-informed conceptual framework applying Albert Bandura's theory of moral disengagement to psychiatric inpatient care for self-injury. Drawing on an interpretive synthesis of Bandura's theory and clinical lit

'We're all in this together': the protective role of belongingness in the contribution of moral injury to mental health among participants in Israel's civil protest movement.

Background: Participating in long-term protests against government actions can affect protesters' mental health and expose protesters to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), such as the betrayal by leaders they once trusted. This study aimed to shed light on the potential psychological buffers against the deleterious effects of exposure to PMIEs of betrayal among protesters and to examine the moderating role of belongingness in the relationships between protesters' exposure to PMIEs and stress, PTSD and depression levels.Method: The study sample comprised 4036 Israeli protesters (Mage

How parental educational anxiety fuels adolescent depression: the mediating chain of moral disengagement and negative coping, and the buffering role of psychological resilience.

BACKGROUND: In the context of academically competitive cultures, particularly in China, parental educational anxiety has emerged as a salient psychosocial stressor affecting adolescent mental health. While growing attention has been given to this phenomenon, the psychological pathways through which parental educational anxiety relates to adolescent depression remain insufficiently delineated. This study investigates the mediating roles of moral disengagement and negative coping style, as well as the moderating function of psychological resilience in this relationship. METHODS: A total of 1,97
