Mosquito-borne diseases are a known tropical phenomenon. This review was conducted to assess the mecha-nisms through which climate change impacts mosquito-borne diseases in temperate regions. Articles were searched from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases. Identification criteria were scope (climate change and mosquito-borne diseases), region (temperate), article type (peer-reviewed), publication language (English), and publication years (since 2015). The WWH (who, what, how) framework was applied to develop the research question and thematic analyses identified the mechanisms

The mosquito immune system is a major barrier that malaria parasites must overcome for their successful development and disease transmission. At each developmental stage in the vector, Plasmodium parasites can be potentially targeted by the mosquito innate immune responses, which involve epithelial, humoral, and cellular components. The immune response to Plasmodium ookinetes can be powerful and some of the underlying effector mechanisms are well characterized. However, the defense responses to oocysts and sporozoites appear to be less effective and are less well understood. Plasmodium parasit

Mosquito-transmitted pathogens cause major public health problems and contribute substantially to the global burden of disease. Aedes mosquitoes transmit dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and Chikungunya viruses; Culex mosquitoes transmit West Nile, Japanese encephalitis, and Saint Louis encephalitis viruses, among others. Experiments utilizing laboratory-reared colonized mosquitoes can address many issues such as vector biology, vector competence, vector-pathogen interaction, and vector control. The establishment of healthy and standardized mosquito colonies requires generation and implementation o

The sterile insect technique (SIT) has emerged as a promising tool for suppressing mosquito-borne diseases. This study develops a Zika virus transmission model integrating SIT, emphasizing both mosquito-borne and environmental aquatic transmission pathways. Unlike eradication-focused approaches, the model targets population suppression through sterile male releases, allowing controlled coexistence of sterile and wild mosquitoes. Dynamical analysis reveals critical thresholds: when the sterile insect release rate b < b p and Allee effects are weak (r < r p ), the system stabilizes at a coexiste

An important defense against the deadly diseases that mosquitoes transmit is the application of insecticides that reduce mosquito populations. Unfortunately, the evolution and subsequent spread of insecticide resistance has decreased their efficacy. Therefore, new mosquito control strategies are needed. One class of larvicides, known as photosensitive insecticides, or PSIs, kills larvae via light-activated oxidative damage. PSIs are promising larvicides because of their high larvicidal efficacy, rapid photodegradation, inexpensive cost, and mechanism that is dissimilar to other insecticide cla…

Diseases caused by flaviviruses, including dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis, are major health problems in Vietnam. This cross-sectiona … presence of pigs, coil burning and households without mosquito-borne disease experience (p < 0.05). Mosquito control by using larvicides or electric traps could lower seropositivity, but other measures did not contribute to significant risk mitigation of flavivirus exposure in dogs. These results will support better control of mosquito-borne diseases in Hanoi, and …

Next-generation sequencing technologies, exponential increases in the availability of virus genomic data, and ongoing advances in phylogenomic methods have made genomic epidemiology an increasingly powerful tool for public health response to a range of mosquito-borne virus outbreaks. In this review, we offer a brief primer on the scope and methods of phylogenomic analyses that can answer key epidemiological questions during mosquito-borne virus public health emergencies. We then focus on case examples of outbreaks, including those caused by dengue, Zika, yellow fever, West Nile, and chikunguny

The spread of mosquito-borne diseases in Southeast Asia has dramatically increased in the latest decades. These infections include dengue, chikungunya and Japanese Encephalitis (JE), high-burden viruses sharing overlapping disease manifestation and vector distribution. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to monitor the dynamics of disease and vector distribution can assist in disease epidemic prediction and public health interventions, particularly in Southeast Asia where sustained high temperatures drive the epidemic spread of these mosquito-borne viruses. Due to lack of accurat

Dengue fever is currently one of the most important mosquito-borne diseases that affect humans. With neither vaccines nor treatment availabl … e results can be obtained in less than an hour. Employment of the kit in the field could help guide mosquito control operations in the prioritization of resources in controlling the transmission of DENV. In this study the potential of the kit for field surveillance of infected dengue vectors, which are epidemiologically important, has been demonstrated.

Mosquito control programs deploy mosquito traps for surveillance and targeting of vector mosquitoes. The primary attractant in these traps is generally carbon dioxide (CO2), which acts as a powerful long-distance lure. Historically, dry ice and compressed gas have been accessible as lures, but they may exhibit logistical hardships (storage, safety, equipment, calibration, consistency, etc.). Additionally, the aforementioned standards can be inaccessible in remote or low-resource environments. Microbial lures have often been proposed to bridge this gap, but prior options, such as yeast, have pr…

Anopheles epiroticus is a malaria vector in Thailand found primarily along coastal areas with brackish water habitats. Insecticides, particularly pyrethroid class compounds, are commonly used to control malaria vectors in Thailand. The lack of specific discriminating lethal concentrations for An. epiroticus has possibly compromised a more accurate assessment of physiological susceptibility to various chemicals. The routine assessment of vector response to insecticides is a key program management component to prevent or mitigate the development of resistance. The purpose of this study was to de

During the past 30 years since 1958 when malaria stratification was first made, a great change in malaria situation has occurred. The original stratification can not represent the current status of malaria distribution. Therefore, it needs to be redivided so as to provide basis for future malaria control work. Taking species of mosquito vector and malaria incidence as the main indices and making reference to the natural geographical division, the current malaria endemic area in China can be divided into four regions, i.e. (1) Western region: it is mostly a natural non-endemic area, except some

After the New York outbreak of West Nile Virus encephalitis in the summer of 1999, awareness that vulnerable children and adolescents may be at risk for this mosquito-borne viral infection intensified. The Nurse Practitioner can play an invaluable critical role to recognize and diagnose this arthropod-borne virus. Pathophysiology, vector transmission, clinical manifestations and laboratory findings are discussed in this article. Emphasis is placed on the PNP's role of providing anticipatory guidance concerning prevention of outbreaks and physical management that focuses on the elimination of m

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the abundance and seasonal dynamics of mosquitoes, and to detect Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in these mosquitoes at the nesting colony of ardeid birds.
METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected bimonthly from July 2009 to May 2010 by Centers for Disease Control. Light traps and dry ice, as a source of CO2, were employed to attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes were first identified, pooled into groups of upto 50 mosquitoes by species, and tested for JEV infection by viral isolation and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS: A total of 20 370 mosquitoes co

Interactions between the Anopheles mosquito vector and Plasmodium parasites shape how malaria is transmitted in endemic regions. The long association of these two organisms has led to evolutionary processes that minimize fitness costs of infection and benefit both players through shared nutrient resources, parasite immune suppression, and mosquito tolerance to infection. In this review we explore recent data describing how Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest malaria parasite, associates with one of its most important natural mosquito hosts, Anopheles gambiae, and we discuss the implications o
