Stability and motion after traumatic dislocation of the knee.

In a series of 10 patients with traumatic dislocation of the knee joint, closed reduction could be accomplished in nine. Conservative treatment was employed in four and operative repair of the ligaments and capsule in six patients. In two of three patients with complicating artery injury, vascular repair was successful. Above-knee amputation was performed in one patient because of delay in the diagnosis of vascular injury and in another patient because of arteriosclerotic gangrene. At follow-up examination, on average 6 years after the accident, the stability and motion of the knee were evalua…

Functional limitation of motion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

The primary conditions characterized by functional limitation of motion of the first metatarsal are hallux limitus and hallux rigidus. The authors discuss the etiology, clinical manifestations, biomechanical compensatory mechanisms, and radiographic findings. Because only temporary relief is provided by conservative treatment, the various surgical approaches to treatment are discussed.

Evidence for a motion sickness agent in cerebrospinal fluid.

The possibility that there might be a neurohumoral cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) link in motion sickness was directly tested in cats by blocking the flow of CSF from the third into the fourth ventricle. Evidence obtained thus far is consistent with the hypothesis. Cats with demonstrably sound blocks did not vomit in response to an accelerative motion sickness stimulus, whereas cats with imperfect 'leaky' blocks vomited with little or no increase in latency. Although there are several putative candidates, the identification of a humoral motion sickness substance is a matter of conjecture.

[Effectiveness of the preparation Gavinton in preventing motion sickness].

The effectiveness of the Hungarian drug kavinton used to prevent motion sickness was assessed. During the study 8 motion sickness susceptible test subjects were kept in a chamber rotating at a rate of 6 rpm for 5 hours. The effectiveness of the drug taken regularly during the exposure was compared with that of scopolamine and placebo taken as a single dose. The results obtained are suggestive of a positive effect of kavinton as an antimotion drug.

Transdermal scopolamine in the prevention of motion sickness at sea.

Studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of scopolamine, absorbed through intact skin, in preventing motion sickness at sea. Efficacy of transdermal scopolamine was compared with oral dimenhydrinate and placebo. Transdermal applications were made 4 to 16 hr before exposure to motion. Dimenhydrinate or placebo was given 1.5 hr before motion and again 2.5 hr after motion began. Comparison with placebo indicated that transdermal scopolamine provided protection against motion sickness at a significance level of p = 0.0001 and oral dimenhydrinate at a level of p = 0.05. Dry mouth, drowsiness…

Age-related differences for motion sickness in the rat.

The relationship between motion sickness and age was examined in three groups of male rats in order to determine whether or not age related differences in susceptibility are due to experiential factors or unspecified changes in the central nervous system. The results revealed no difference in susceptibility between 2-month old and 11-month old group. However, the 20-month old group was significantly less susceptible to motion sickness than either of the other groups. These findings indicate that general age related changes in the central nervous system are more likely to account for the relati…

Some influences of vision on susceptibility to motion sickness.

Two experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of vision on susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to constant patterns of vestibular stimulation. The motion profile involved accelerating subjects at 20 degrees/s2 to 300 degrees/s, maintaining them at that constant velocity for 30 s, and decelerating them to a rapid stop in about 1.5 s. The number of stops tolerated by a subject before reaching the motion sickness endpoint served as his score. In Experiment 1, subjects were tested twice with their eyes open and twice with their eyes blindfolded. They tolerated fewer sudden…

Collective Intermolecular Motions of Water in Sodium Montmorillonite.

By tracking temperature-induced changes in vibrational spectra, inelastic neutron scattering revealed how confined water governs the phase behavior of the sodium montmorillonite gels. Translational acoustic phonons hardened (shifted to higher energy), while librational modes softened, corresponding to an increased distortion and confinement of water with decreased water content. For a wet sample (∼166 wt % water content) with well-developed pore structure, vibrational modes underwent a phase change on heating from hexagonal ice-like spectral features to those of bulk-like liquid water near 270

Facial skin temperature as a biomarker for motion sickness.

Motion sickness may prevent the adoption of automated vehicles, as passengers are more susceptible than drivers. Predicting individual susceptibility from vehicle motion is challenging due high variability between people. There is a need to measure passengers' motion sickness, preferably objectively and unobtrusively. Biomarkers, the physiological responses to motion sickness, could provide a solution. We developed and evaluated a camera-based system using electro-optical and infrared imaging to measure facial skin temperature unobtrusively. The relationship between facial skin temperature in …

Influence of pelvic position on shoulder range of motion.

BACKGROUND: pelvis and shoulder are deeply integrated. They are connected by myofascial slings. The pelvic and spinal posture affects the position of the scapula and the activity of its muscles and affects acromio-humeral distance and so that affects shoulder movement. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of pelvic position on the shoulder range of motion. METHODS: The full active range of motion (flexion/extension, abduction, and external/internal rotation) of both shoulders was measured by digital goniometer for 33 normal adult subjects. Measurements were taken from a stand…
