Further evidence to support disconjugate eye torsion as a predictor of space motion sickness.

Disconjugate eye torsion in hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flight was examined in four former astronauts and four previously tested ex-astronauts to replicate an earlier study and to further test the asymmetry hypothesis of otolith function. Results in the new subjects supported the asymmetry hypothesis and confirmed previous findings that those with low scores of torsional disconjugacy on the KC-135 did not suffer space motion sickness in their prior Shuttle missions while those with high scores did. Tilting subjects with high disconjugacy scores slightly to one side and the other failed…

Motion sickness severity and physiological correlates during repeated exposures to a rotating optokinetic drum.

Fifty-two subjects were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. Ten of these subjects who became motion sick during the first session completed two additional sessions. Subjects' symptoms of motion sickness, perception of self-motion, electrogastrograms (EGGs), heart rate, mean successive differences of R-R intervals (RRI), and skin conductance were recorded for each session. The results from the first session indicated that the development of motion sickness was accompanied by increased EGG 4-9 cpm activity (gastric tachyarrhythmia), decreased mean successive differences of RRI, increased ski…

An evaluation of cognitive-behavioral therapy for training resistance to visually-induced motion sickness.

This investigation examined the techniques for reducing visually-induced motion sickness. On the basis of their responses to a motion sickness history questionnaire, 32 subjects were selected and assigned to 1 of 4 groups such that the groups were matched on the basis of their ability to tolerate visually-induced apparent motion (VM). One group received 10 sessions of desensitization training only (DT); a second group received 10 sessions of cognitive therapy only (CT); a third group received 10 sessions of combined desensitization and cognitive therapy treatment (CG); and a fourth group recei…

Influence of transdermal scopolamine on motion sickness during 7 days' exposure to heavy seas.

We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of transdermal scopolamine in the prevention of motion sickness (MS) aboard a frigate during 7 days of continuously moderate or heavy seas. Forty-nine healthy sailors with a previous history of MS were randomly assigned to receive a transdermal therapeutic system of scopolamine (TTS-S) or transdermal placebo (TD-P). Patches were placed behind the ears at least 4 hours before departure and were removed 72 hours later. Subjects were observed on days 1 to 4 and 6. In the TTS-S group, both subjective fe…

Motion sickness in quail: body-rotation-induced conditioned fluid aversions in C. coturnix japonica.

The presence of motion sickness in Japanese quail (C. coturnix japonica) was examined by using a conditioned fluid aversion as an index. Twenty-three birds were divided into three groups. One group received a novel fluid (yellow-sour water) followed by 30 min of body rotation at 70 rpm (on a schedule of 15 s on and 5 s off). Another group received the novel fluid followed by exposure to a sham rotation procedure. The third group experienced the rotation procedure following access to water. The group receiving the rotation procedure contingent on presentation of the novel fluid exhibited a cond…

The Validity and Reliability of the Persian version of the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire and Misery Scale.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness can be induced by both real and simulated movement. Questionnaires such as the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) and the Misery Scale (MISC) assess susceptibility but require cultural adaptation for non-English speakers. This study aims to translate and adapt these instruments into Persian (MSAQ-P and MISC-P) and evaluate their validity and reliability. METHODS: The MSAQ and MISC were translated into Persian and underwent cross-cultural adaptation. A sample of 70 participants, comprising 21 experienced pilots, 27 pilot students, and 22 non-pilot stude…

Functional and imaging anomalies of the vestibular system in motion sickness: a clinical observation study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the differences in vestibular organ function tests and the temporal bone computed tomography (CT) findings between healthy individuals and patients with motion sickness (MS), providing a basis for establishing functional and imaging diagnostic criteria for MS. METHOD: Vestibular organ function tests and temporal bone CT imaging were performed on patients in the MS group (n = 50) and healthy individuals in the control group (n = 50). Functional and imaging anomalies of the vestibular organ were identified and their features and patterns were a…

Comparison of different methods for categorizing the individual susceptibility to motion sickness - A carsickness study.

In studies aimed at developing avoidance strategies to reduce motion sickness (kinetosis) in autonomous vehicles, failing to account for the wide variability in individual kinetosis susceptibility can lead to inaccuracies and disregard effective countermeasures. Three methods for assessing individual susceptibility to carsickness - two questionnaires focusing on kinetosis experiences and a kinetosis-provoking lab test - were compared with the development of kinetosis during real car driving tests. Questions about car-specific kinetosis-provoking situations (MS-C) exhibit stronger correlations …

A Historical View of Motion Sickness-A Plague at Sea and on Land, Also with Military Impact.

Seasickness and its triggers, symptoms, and preventive measures were well known in antiquity. This chapter is based on an analysis of descriptions of motion sickness, in particular seasickness, in ancient Greek, Roman, and Chinese literature. A systematic search was made from the Greek period beginning with Homer in 800 BC to the late Roman period and ending with Aetios Amidenos in 600 AD, as well as in the Chinese medical classics dating from around 300 AD. Major aspects are the following: body movements caused by waves were identified in all cultures as the critical stimuli. The ancient Gree…

A Wearable Device Providing a Visual Fixation Point for the Alleviation of Motion Sickness Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Motion sickness (MS) can be problematic for many military operations. Some pharmaceutical countermeasures are effective but can lead to side effects. Non-pharmaceutical countermeasures vary in effectiveness and can require time to be beneficial (e.g., desensitization). Previous research suggests that visual fixation can alleviate MS symptoms. In the current experiment we tested the effectiveness of a user-worn device that provides a visual fixation point that moves with the user. METHODS: Fourteen subjects viewed the interior of a rotating optokinetic drum (60°/s) through a visor …

Use of controlled diaphragmatic breathing for the management of motion sickness in a virtual reality environment.

Evidence indicates that activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) suppresses physiological responses associated with motion sickness. Research also shows paced breathing increases PNS activation; the current study examines the use of paced diaphragmatic breathing (DB) training to quell motion sickness symptoms. Healthy participants (N = 60) were pre-screened for motion sickness susceptibility. Participants were then randomly assigned to either a control condition, focusing on environmental awareness, or to an experimental condition implementing paced DB. Following this, participan…

Reduction of motion sickness with an enhanced placebo instruction: an experimental study with healthy participants.

OBJECTIVE: Expectancy and conditioning are underlying mechanisms of placebo and nocebo responses. In previous studies with motion sickness, we could induce nocebo responses by both methods, but no placebo responses. METHODS: In Experiment 1, 64 volunteers (50% women, mean age = 23.5 years) were evaluated to determine the degree they realized speed changes in nauseogenic rotation. For Experiment 2, 32 volunteers (50% women, mean age = 26.0 years) were exposed to fast rotation (15 rounds per minute, or rpm) on Day 1. On Day 2, they either received a drink with a presumed effective antiemetic (a…

Zinopin--the rationale for its use as a food supplement in Traveller's thrombosis and motion sickness.

Venous thrombo-embolism (VTE) has been associated with periods of prolonged immobility during air, sea and road travel. Motion sickness (MS) has also been reported during both long and short journeys. Current prophylactic therapies for both these indications are generally associated with side effects. Physiological profiles of Pycnogenol and Standardized Ginger Root Extract (SGRE) representing active constituents of Zinopin have been described and reviewed in relation to their activities involved in the patho-physiology of VTE (Traveller's Sickness) and MS and their safe use as food supplement…

Prevention of postoperative vomiting with granisetron in paediatric patients with and without a history of motion sickness.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A history of motion sickness is one of the patient-related factors associated with postoperative emesis. This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was undertaken to assess the efficacy of granisetron, a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor antagonist, for preventing postoperative vomiting after tonsillectomy in 120 children with (n = 60) and without (n = 60) a history of motion sickness. Patients received a single dose of granisetron (40 micrograms.kg-1) or placebo (saline) (n = 30 of each) intravenously after an inhalation induction of anaesthesia. A comple…
