Lichen planus (LP) is a common disorder in which auto-cytotoxic T lymphocytes trigger apoptosis of epithelial cells leading to chronic inflammation. Oral LP (OLP) can be a source of severe morbidity and has a small potential to be malignant. The diagnosis of OLP can be made from the clinical features if they are sufficiently characteristic, particularly if typical skin or other lesions are present, but biopsy is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and to exclude dysplasia and malignancy. Graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) is a serious complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Indications for HSCT have greatly expanded, and more patients are undergoing HSCT today than ever before. In addition, the options for immunosuppressive therapy for both prevention and treatment of GVHD have also expanded. These changes have in turn altered the landscape of this disease. We have reviewed the current literature on this subject and presented an update on this disease with a particular emphasis on mucosal manifestations.

Generally, gastric mucosal calcinosis (GMC) is only rarely encountered in routine biopsies. GMC may be classified as dystrophic, metastatic, or idiopathic. Metastatic calcification represents the most frequently encountered subtype, and refers to the deposition of calcium salts on largely normal tissues in the setting of an abnormal serum biochemical environment (hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and/or an elevated CaxPO4 product). In contrast, dystrophic calcification implies calcification in inflammed, fibrotic, or otherwise altered tissue in the setting of a normal biochemical environment.

Mucosal surfaces serve as a gateway to disease. Here, we demonstrate that RNA interference can be used to manipulate mucosal gene expression in vivo. Using a murine model, we show that direct application of liposome-complexed siRNA mediates gene-specific silencing in cervicovaginal and rectal mucosa. Forty one consecutive patients with portal hypertension (PHT) were evaluated by colonoscopy to study the prevalence, type, extent and predictors of haemorrhoids, colorectal varices, and portal hypertensive colopathy. Specific inquiry and regular follow-up assessed frequency of hematochezia. Twenty five patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding without PHT who underwent colonoscopy served as controls.
