Firing patterns of motor units in normal rats.

Skeletal muscles consist of motor units which may differ considerably in contractile properties and types of usage. Some units participate mainly in relatively rare, quick movements and contract rapidly and are easily fatigued (type FF); others contribute to the maintenance of posture and hence contract slowly and are fatigue-resistant (type S), while others are both fast and fatigue-resistant (type FR). Our understanding of motor control mechanisms and the dependence of contractile properties on usage would be enhanced if more quantitative information were available concerning the firing patt

Dynamics of brain-muscle interaction with neuromuscular fatigability: systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular fatigability impairs motor performance in both healthy and neurological populations. Corticomuscular coherence (CMC), derived from EEG and EMG recordings, reflects the brain-muscle interaction during movement. However, the impact of neuromuscular fatigability on CMC in healthy and neurological populations remains unclear. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase was conducted up to 02/02/2026. Eligible studies investigated CMC changes related to fatiguing tasks in healthy or neurological participants. Two reviewers independently screened,

Paired personal interaction reveals objective differences between pushing and holding isometric muscle action.

In sports and movement sciences isometric muscle function is usually measured by pushing against a stable resistance. However, subjectively one can hold or push isometrically. Several investigations suggest a distinction of those forms. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these two forms of isometric muscle action can be distinguished by objective parameters in an interpersonal setting. 20 subjects were grouped in 10 same sex pairs, in which one partner should perform the pushing isometric muscle action (PIMA) and the other partner executed the holding isometric muscle action (HIM

Optimal control-driven functional electrical stimulation: A PRISMA-ScR scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Rehabilitation after a neurological impairment can be supported by functional electrical stimulation (FES). However, FES is limited by early muscle fatigue, slowing down the recovery progress. The use of optimal control to reduce overstimulation and improve motion precision is gaining interest. This scoping review maps the current literature on optimal control for FES, clarifies best practices, persistent challenges, and outlines future research directions. METHODS: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a search was conducted up to September 2025 using the combined keywords "FES"…

Convergence of pattern generator outputs on a common mechanism of diaphragm motor unit recruitment.

Motor units are the final element of neuromotor control. In manner analogous to the organization of neuromotor control in other skeletal muscles, diaphragm motor units comprise phrenic motoneurons located in the cervical spinal cord that innervate the diaphragm muscle, the main inspiratory muscle in mammals. Diaphragm motor units play a primary role in sustaining ventilation but are also active in other nonventilatory behaviors, including coughing, sneezing, vomiting, defecation, and parturition. Diaphragm muscle fibers comprise all fiber types. Thus, diaphragm motor units display substantial

Experimentally induced defects of mitochondrial metabolism in rat skeletal muscle. Biological effects of the NADH: coenzyme Q reductase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium.

An animal model for the human condition of mitochondrial myopathy has been established and characterized physiologically and biochemically. The NADH: coenzyme Q reductase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium [Bloxham (1979) Biochem. Soc. Trans. 7, 103-106] was either infused acutely in vivo into rat hind limb or injected chronically into rats. Both modes of delivery resulted in a reduced muscle oxidative capacity and increased fatigue. Analysis of muscle metabolites by h.p.l.c. and 31P-n.m.r. indicated that ATP concentrations were similar to control values during periods of stimulation and these were

Antagonism of the D2 dopamine receptor enhances tremor but reduces voluntary muscle activation in humans.

Neural circuits that comprise the indirect pathway in the basal ganglia have been implicated in tremor genesis, and possibly play a role in the voluntary activation of muscles. However, an absence of in vivo human studies that target striatal D2 dopamine receptors of the indirect pathway have prevented causal links being made between the D2 receptor and motor control. Healthy individuals ingested 3 mg of the competitive D2 antagonist haloperidol in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, two-way, cross-over study. Two experiments were performed to examine involuntary and voluntary movement. The

The Effects of Noninvasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Fatigue in Participants With Primary Sjögren's Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Fatigue is one of the most important symptoms needing improvement in Primary Sjögren's syndrome (PSS). Previous data from our group suggest that noninvasive stimulation of the vagus nerve (nVNS) may improve symptoms of fatigue. This experimental medicine study uses the gammaCore device (electroCore) and a sham device to investigate the relationship between nVNS and fatigue in PSS, and to explore potential mechanisms involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty participants with PSS were randomly assigned to use active (n = 20) or sham (n = 20) nVNS devices twice daily for 54 days in a d

Fatigue, quality of life and physical fitness following an exercise intervention in multiple myeloma survivors (MASCOT): an exploratory randomised Phase 2 trial utilising a modified Zelen design.

BACKGROUND: Exercise may improve fatigue in multiple myeloma survivors, but trial evidence is limited, and exercise may be perceived as risky in this older patient group with osteolytic bone destruction. METHODS: In this Phase 2 Zelen trial, multiple myeloma survivors who had completed treatment at least 6 weeks ago, or were on maintenance only, were enrolled in a cohort study and randomly assigned to usual care or a 6-month exercise programme of tailored aerobic and resistance training. Outcome assessors and usual care participants were masked. The primary outcome was the FACIT-F fatigue sco

Biological sex differences in fatigue in resistance-trained individuals: A scoping review.

Females may experience less neuromuscular fatigue and improved recovery following resistance training than males; however, it is unclear whether this applies to resistance-trained individuals. A systematic scoping review was performed to map the evidence on sex differences in fatigue during and following resistance training in trained participants. PubMed, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus were searched following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The protocol was prospectively registered. Of the 4,020 identified articles, 34 were included. These studies assessed sex differences in fatigue using various measures dur
