Delayed radiation myelopathy (DRM) is a rare yet severe complication of radiotherapy. This condition has a progressive pattern that is often irreversible. Several therapeutic strategies have been introduced to alleviate disease complications, including corticosteroids, hyperbaric oxygen, anticoagulants, and antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents. However, despite their beneficial effect, they have not been the definitive treatments for DRM. Here we present the case of a 55-year-old woman with a history of multiple myeloma who developed neurological complications 11 months after r

Relapsing neuromyelitis optica is rare in children. The identification of a highly specific serum autoantibody marker (neuromyelitis optica-immunoglobulin G) differentiates neuromyelitis optica from other demyelinating disorders, particularly in clinically challenging cases. We present a child with multiple episodes of transverse myelitis and optic neuritis with positive neuromyelitis optica-immunoglobulin G titers, consistent with a diagnosis of relapsing neuromyelitis optica. Serial titers of neuromyelitis optica-immunoglobulin G normalized during remission.

A 44-year-old Aborigine with Adult T-cell Leukaemia/Lymphoma (ATLL) due to HTLV-I is reported. He presented with transverse myelitis of subacute onset, and subsequently developed frank T-cell leukaemia complicated by splenomegaly and hypercalcaemia. Cell surface marker studies showed a phenotype of CD3+ CD4+ CD8- CD25+, and serological and molecular studies confirmed HTLV-I infection. This is the first report of ATLL in an Australian Aborigine.

Devic disease (neuromyelitis optica [NMO]) is an idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating and necrotizing disease characterized by optic neuritis and transverse myelitis, either simultaneously or in isolation. NMO is often idiopathic but may also be associated with systemic autoimmune disease. The prognosis of NMO is severe, especially in those with early and recurrent relapses. MRI studies have revealed that most frequently, there is a long spinal cord lesion that extends through three or more vertebral segments in length. NMO-IgG is the first antibody marker for any inflammatory central nervous

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and MOG-associated disease (MOGAD) are an increasingly recognized group of demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. Previous studies suggest that prognosis is predicted by older age at onset, number of relapses, the severity of the first attack and autoantibody status.
OBJECTIVE: To study prognostic factors associated with disability progression and additional relapses in the 3-year follow-up of a national NMOSD/MOGAD cohort.
RESULTS: Out of 180 of the initial Portuguese cohort, data on 82 patients was available at t

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Blood fluke infection or schistosomiasis affects up to 300 million people worldwide. Although infection of the hepatic and urogenital systems commonly occurs, central nervous system involvement is rare. When presenting in the spinal cord, schistosomiasis can be difficult to diagnose because it can present as mass lesion or transverse myelitis. We describe a patient with lumbar intramedullary spinal schistosomiasis who presented to a tertiary medical center in the United States and discuss the diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) myelitis is a rare complication of herpes zoster. Diagnosing and treating this entity may be challenging. Clinical outcomes vary and neurological sequelae may be seen despite treatment. We report a case of a 43-year-old woman with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection (CD4 cell count 191 cells/µL - 14%; undetectable viral load) who was started on antiretroviral treatment eight months before. She presented with VZV meningitis and transverse myelitis and concomitant thoracic vesicular rash at the dermatomal level T6. Neurological examination revealed

Myelitis is defined as inflammatory disease of the spinal cord irrespective of the underlying aetiology or pathologic-anatomic alterations. It can be caused by direct infections, postinfectious or postvaccinal immunological processes or other (auto)immunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis or systemic vasculitis. The clinical presentation is diverse and varies from temporary sensory deficits to persistent tetraplegia with respiratory insufficiency. Diagnostic work-up must include a thorough anamnesis, clinical-neurological examination, neurophysiological studies, analysis of blood and

Demyelinating diseases in children is a broad group of illnesses, which affect the central nervous system. Demyelinating diseases can be monophasic or chronic and comprise acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. Demyelinating diseases are rare, but it is important for the physician to recognize these diseases, as well as to understand the differential diagnoses. This review summarizes the current knowledge of demyelinating disorders in children, focusing on an approach to diagnosis and management.

This paper describes an unusual clinically isolated syndrome of inflammatory demyelination that was characterized by a right VI nerve palsy and right internuclear ophthalmoparesis (INO), along with an unusual form of dissociated nystagmus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an isolated lesion within the right dorsomediolateral pontine tegmentum. Four years later, the subject developed a partial sensory transverse myelitis, confirming clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS). This paper extends the range of isolated syndromes associated with MS.

Active or passive immunisation with vaccines or sera can cause lesions of immunomediated pathogenesis involving both the central (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Although very rare, the neurological complications described during antitetanus vaccinations almost exclusively affect the PNS, those affecting the CNS being even more rare. The authors report a case of transverse myelitis with a radicular component, which arose acutely following the administration of tetanus toxoid and had a partially favourable course.

Two patients with neuroschistosomiasis are reported. In both patients diagnostic problems were encountered. The first case began with an aspecific allergic reaction of facial oedema and abnormal behaviour. The symptoms were followed by generalized convulsive seizures, dysphasia and hemiparesis. The disease characteristics, paraclinical findings and remarkable improvement on antischistosomal drug therapy strongly suggested cerebral schistosomiasis. The second case history starts with a cauda syndrome while in the end the diagnosis of transverse myelitis was confirmed.

A 50-year-old pregnant woman (G3Ab2) who had her fourth IVF procedure during the first trimester of her pregnancy is described in this article as having a rare incidence of acute paraplegia. The patient's early symptoms included headache, sudden lower limb weakness, urine retention, back discomfort, and uncontrolled hypertension. The patient had a history of infertility, thyroidectomy, hypertension, and repeated spontaneous abortions. After transverse myelitis was confirmed by spinal MRI, methylprednisolone pulse therapy and plasmapheresis were started as treatments. Subsequent analysis of CSF

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune disease that causes severe demyelination, especially in the optic nerve and spinal cord with typical clinical manifestations of acute optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. The symptoms can occur simultaneously or separated by a variable period. NMOSD is associated with serum aquaporin antibodies 4 immunoglobulin G (AQP4-IgG).
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 22-year-old male with complaints of weakness of all four limbs, impaired vision, urinary incontinence, and dyspnea. The Expanded Disability Status Scale

Demyelinating diseases are a group of conditions of autoimmune etiology directed against the myelin of the central nervous system. In many cases, the onset of the illness is preceded by a nonspecific viral infection. Multiple sclerosis is a disease that evolves with relapses and remissions with polyfocal neurological deficits, being the most frequent optic neuritis, transverse myelitis and encephalic trunk involvement. Typically, magnetic resonance image (MRI) shows peri-ventricular, peri-callosal, cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord hyperintensive lesions in T2 and FLAIR weighted images. O

Eight strains of P3/Sabin-related polioviruses were analyzed; four from persistent paralytic poliomyelitis cases classified as vaccine associated, one from a transient paralysis case classified as transverse myelitis, one from a transient paralysis case classified as Guillain-Barré syndrome, one from a transient facial paralysis case, and one from a healthy vaccine. The serotypes of the viral isolates were identified by the neutralization test with hyperimmune equine sera and the relationship of the isolates with the P3/Sabin strain was demonstrated by molecular hybridization of the viral RNA

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A variety of neurological complications have been reported following the widespread use of the COVID-19 vaccines which may lead to vaccine hesitancy and serve as a major barrier to the public health aim of achieving protective herd immunity by vaccination. In this article, we review the available evidence regarding these neurological adverse events reported, to provide clarity regarding the same so that unfounded fears maybe put to rest.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is a greater than expected occurrence of severe neurological adverse events such as cortical sinus venous thrombosi
