Synchronous intestinal tumors: aggressive jejunal carcinoid and sigmoid malignant polyp.

Association of aggressive jejunal carcinoid tumors and other primary gastrointestinal neoplasms are rarely observed. We describe the case of a synchronous jejunal carcinoid tumor and two colorectal polyps in a 78-year old woman. Surgical intervention was performed for the colorectal tumors and the carcinoid was incidentally found. It was well differentiated but was accompanied by lymph node metastasis and peritoneal carcinomatosis. In this case, the prognosis was not depending by the colorectal tumors but the aggressive feature of jejunal carcinoid lead to patient's death.

Metastatic testicular teratoma of the nasal cavity: a rare cause of severe intractable epistaxis.

Malignant neoplasms of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are uncommon. Choriocarcinoma is a highly malignant germ cell tumour occurring in the reproductive organs. Metastasis may be principally by the lymphatic route as in other germ cell tumours but choriocarcinoma is also known to spread haematogenously. We present a rare case of metastatic choriocarcinoma to the nasal cavity from testicular teratoma presenting with intractable epistaxis in a 32-year-old Caucasian male, who ultimately succumbed to this disease.

New histopathological and molecular findings in gynecological cancers.

This review covers significant developments in the pathological classification of gynecological tumors in recent years. Topics covered include The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Classification of endometrial carcinomas and how to incorporate this into routine reporting, the fact that most synchronous endometrial and ovarian endometrioid carcinomas represent metastasis from the endometrium to the ovary, and the important subject of lymphovascular space invasion in endometrial carcinomas. The categorization of cervical squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and adenocarcinomas and vulval and vaginal SCCs i

[Radiotherapy in bone metastases--with special reference to its effect on relieving pain].

Between December 1986 and January 1978, 68 patients with bone metastases were analyzed to evaluate the effect of radiation for the relief of pain. The 68 patients, who had a total of 97 lesions, complained of pain caused by their bone metastasis. The good, fair, and poor responses were found to be 18%, 60%, and 22%, respectively. With reference to the primary neoplasms, the effective response rate was 73% in lung cancer, 100% in breast cancer, 75% in gastric cancer, 100% in hepatic cancer, 100% in bladder cancer, 25% in epipharyngeal cancer, and 70% in the other neoplasms. Depending on the cel

Immunohistochemical staining for desmogleins 1 and 2 in keratinocytic neoplasms with squamous phenotype: actinic keratosis, keratoacanthoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

Desmosomes are intercellular junctions that have been shown to be down-regulated in certain types of carcinoma and that may play a role in suppression of invasion and metastasis. This paper describes an immunohistochemical study of three types of epidermal neoplasms with monoclonal antibody to desmoglein in order to determine how desmosomal staining correlates with the clinical, biological and histopathological features of these neoplasms. Actinic keratosis (AK) is the most common keratinocytic premalignant neoplasm that was reported to have a 10-20% rate of malignant transformation into squam

Solitary fibrous tumor: an updated review.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a fibroblastic neoplasm characterized by a branching, thin-walled dilated staghorn-shaped (hemangiopericytoma-like) vasculature and a NAB2::STAT6 gene fusion. SFTs can occur in almost any anatomical location, including superficial and deep soft tissues, visceral organs, and bone. They most commonly occur in extrapleural locations, equally affect both sexes, and are typically present in adults. Although metastasis is rare, SFTs frequently show local recurrence. The diagnosis of SFTs is difficult because of their broad histological and morphological overlap with o

[Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms-Surgery in a multimodal concept].

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NEN) are mainly found in the small intestine and pancreas. The course of the disease in patients is highly variable and depends on the degree of differentiation (G1-G3) of the neoplasm. The potential for metastasis formation of GEP-NEN is high even with good differentiation (G1). Lymph node metastases and, in many cases, liver metastases are also often found. Less common are bone metastases or peritoneal carcinomas. The treatment of these GEP-NENs is surgical, whenever possible. If an R0 resection with removal of all lymph node and liver met

Malignant transformation of biliary adenofibroma combined with benign lymphadenopathy mimicking advanced liver carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Biliary adenofibromas (BAFs) are rare primary hepatic neoplasms, some of which can potentially undergo malignant transformation. Here, we describe a rare case of malignant transformation of BAF. CASE SUMMARY: A 51-year-old female was referred to our hospital with epigastric pain. Computed tomography showed a solitary liver mass combined with the enlargement of multiple mediastinal and cervical lymph nodes, clinically mimicking a liver carcinoma with extensive lymph node metastasis. However, core needle biopsy suggested BAF with malignant transformation. Finally, the patient underw

Composite Hemangioendothelioma of the Submandibular Region.

Composite hemangioendothelioma (HE) is a rare vascular neoplasm of intermediate malignant potential that predominantly occurs within the dermis or subcutis of the extremities, and occurs in a wide age range. It is locally aggressive with a high rate of local recurrence, and more rarely regional lymph node or distant metastasis. Histologically, it is composed of a complex admixture of benign, intermediate and malignant vascular components. Although composite HE may contain angiosarcoma-like areas, its prognosis is better than that of pure angiosarcoma. We describe a case of composite HE present

Adrenal cortical neoplasms in children: why so many carcinomas and yet so many survivors?

Adrenal cortical neoplasms in children are represented by a disproportionate number of cases that have been diagnosed pathologically as adrenocortical carcinomas (ACCs)-as many as 90% of all cortical tumors in some pediatric series. Like other solid malignancies of childhood, over half of ACCs present in the first 4 years of life in over 50% of cases. Most are sporadically occurring neoplasms, but ACCs are a manifestation of Beckwith-Wiedemann and Li-Fraumeni syndromes. Despite the fact that the microscopic features are often quite atypical and identical in many respects to ACCs in adults, the

Hepatic angiosarcoma presenting as an acute intraabdominal hemorrhage treated with transarterial chemoembolization.

Primary malignant neoplasms of the liver are some of the most uncommon malignancies in many parts of the world. They include hepatocellular carcinoma and stromal tumors such as hepatic angiosarcoma. It is a lethal tumor with life expectancy of less than six months. Once discovered, it is often too late for surgical intervention. Like other vascular tumors of the liver and spleen, intraperitoneal hemorrhage is a well-documented finding of angiosarcoma which can be lethal if not diagnosed and treated immediately. As in our case, intraperitoneal hemorrhage from primary tumor rupture was the only

Lymph nodal involvement by renal angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipoma of the kidney is a clonal neoplasm, apparently part of a family of neoplasms derived from perivascular epithelial cells. A 40-year-old woman presented with right flank pain and an otherwise non-significant medical history. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed an 18 cm solid mass in the mid-portion of the right kidney and multiple perihilar lymph nodes. Presumptive diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Right radical nephrectomy and a perihilar lymph node dissection was performed through a Chevron incision for the anticipated diagnosis of renal adenocarcinoma. The renal tu

[Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus].

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare neoplasm of the esophagus, composes both of carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. From Oct. 1982 to Sept. 1991, there were 516 neoplasms of the esophagus, 2 (0.39%) carcinosarcoma, treated at our hospital. The first patient was a 62-year-old man, pathological stage III (T3N2M0). The second patient was a 68-year-old man, pathological stage I (T1N0M0). The tumors were polypoid and located at the middle portion of the esophagus. They had received subtotal esophagectomy, mediastinal lymph node dissection and cervical esophagogastrostomy, retrosternally.

[Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study on 8 cases of malignant mixed müllerian tumor].

The clinico-pathological features of eight cases of malignant mixed müllerian tumor, a rare neoplasm composed of an admixture of epithelial and stromal elements, are reported. Four of the tumors located in the endometrium, three in the cervix and one in the ovary. Microscopically, the epithelial elements ranged from poorly to well differentiated adenocarcinoma. Homologous stromal sarcoma cells were present in six tumors and heterologous elements were also seen in the other two tumors. Immunohistochemical studies showed diffuse cytoplasmic staining of keratin in the epithelial elements of all t

Exosomal S100A9 promotes lung metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma via activating cancer-associated fibroblasts.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm that arises in secretory glands and commonly metastasizes to the lungs, remaining the primary cause of patient mortality. Here, we observed that S100A9, a calcium-binding protein, was significantly upregulated in highly metastatic ACC cells and markedly enriched in their derived exosomes. Single-cell RNA sequencing was employed to comprehensively map the tumor microenvironment (TME), revealing robust intercellular communication between epithelial cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Mechanistically, S100A9-enriched ex

Unusual brain metastasis from colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases due to colorectal cancer correspond to 3-5% of all brain metastases. The prognostic factors are based on age, functional status, and single metastasis. Its management is multidisciplinary, with poor prognosis despite the management. CASE DESCRIPTION: A case of a 64-year-old male presented with symptoms of headache, disorientation, and nausea. The enhanced magnetic resonance image showed a mass in the right frontal horn of the lateral ventricle, contrast enhancing, with irregular borders, but defined, without restriction in diffusion-weighted images, associated wit

The importance of ultrasound-guided biopsy: lesson from a case of liver metastasis from uveal melanoma.

Melanoma is an extremely aggressive malignant neoplasm. Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults, representing 3-5% of all melanomas. Liver metastases can be clinically detected in 10-20% of patients with metastatic disease from cutaneous melanoma. However, while liver is typically not the first site of disease spread in cutaneous melanoma, ocular melanoma has been showed to primarily metastasize from the eye to the liver; indeed, liver metastases are detected in approximately 87% of patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. Therefore, liver metastasis can be c

Metastatic Intracranial Choriocarcinoma in the Absence of a Primary Lesion: A Case Report.

Intracranial choriocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive neoplasm characterized by the proliferation of trophoblastic tissue. Although choriocarcinoma most commonly arises in the uterus as a component of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, instances of intracranial choriocarcinoma are exceptionally uncommon. We report a case of intracranial choriocarcinoma without any evidence of a tumor elsewhere. A 25-year-old woman presented with a history of 1 month of evolution with right frontal hemicranial headache, followed by visual disturbances, otalgia, and diplopia. On neurological examination, she w

Intrathymic Localization of Melanoma: A Brief Report of Two Cases and a Review of the Literature.

Intrathymic localizations of melanoma represent a very rare entity, with fewer than ten cases of intrathymic melanoma described in the literature. Herein, we describe two cases of patients who underwent surgical removal of a thymic mass at our thoracic surgery department between 2015 and 2022. The final pathological examination revealed a malignant melanoma in both cases; we therefore carried out a literature review to identify such rare and similar cases. In the first case, the intrathymic localization of melanoma was the first manifestation of the disease, posing a dilemma regarding the meta
