BACKGROUND: Vismodegib is indicated for the treatment of advanced or metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The predictive factors of response to vismodegib have so far been poorly described.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine the profile of patients responding to vismodegib and the duration of response. Secondary objectives were to assess whether there is a correlation between the duration of treatment and the risk of relapse, and to define factors associated with relapse.
MATERIALS & METHODS: We included 61 patients with locally advanced BCC (laBCC) or multiple BCC, treated

Objective: To explore the methods for the accurate resection of malignant tumors of the external nose, and the accurate evaluation and repair of tissue defects. Methods: We collected 48 cases with nasal malignant tumors treated in 980 Hospital, Joint Support Force of the People's Liberation Army from January 2010 to June 2020, including 28 males and 20 females, aged 36-86 years. The pathological types of tumors included basal cell carcinomas (n=29), squamous cell carcinomas (n=11), trichilemmal carcinomas(n=6), denoid cystic carcinoma (n=1) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n=1). Tumor resection was m

Evidence of the association between a personal history of basal cell carcinoma and the risk of non-cutaneous malignancies is conflicting. The aim of this study was to retrospectively clarify the risk of non-cutaneous cancers in individuals with basal cell carcinoma using nationwide Finnish registry data for 96,304 patients and 394,503 randomly selected population controls. In this study, individuals with basal cell carcinoma have an increased risk of other cancers (odds ratio (OR) 1.38; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.36-1.40). The risk was most prominent for lip cancer (OR 5.29; 95% CI 4.5

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma consisting of dilated folliculosebaceous units associated with mesenchymal elements. Ansai et al reported that distinctive features of Miescher-type melanocytic nevi (MMCNs) accompanied 4.6% of FSCH; however, there have been no data about how often FSCH features accompany MMCNs. In this study, we used 7829 cases that had been histopathologically diagnosed as MMCNs of the face, neck, and scalp at the Department of Dermatopathology, Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi Hospital and observed whether features of FSCH accompan

BACKGROUND: Primary basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the caruncle is an extremely rare entity. Overall, only a few cases are described in the literature. With respect to the S2k guidelines on basal cell carcinoma of the skin, the eyelids, eyebrows and periorbital regions are regarded as zones with a high risk of recurrence. Due to its rarity hardly any data are available for primary BCC of the caruncle.
METHODS: This article is based on a comprehensive literature review and a case presentation.
RESULTS: In addition to a literature review this article reports the case of a 58-year-old male who p

Childhood onset basal cell carcinoma is uncommon. In addition to occurring in children with albinism, Bazex syndrome, basal cell carcinoma nevus syndrome, nevus sebaceus, radiotherapy-treated cancers, solid organ transplants, and xeroderma pigmentosum, childhood onset basal cell carcinoma has also occurred, albeit less commonly, de novo. We describe a boy with idiopathic childhood onset basal cell carcinoma. Previously published children with de novo basal cell carcinoma were collected from computerized medical literature search (PubMed) and citations from earlier reports. To our knowledge, ch

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of basal cell carcinoma of the scrotum.
METHODS: In a review of 56 scrotal tumors, we found 4 primary neoplasias, 3 benign mesenchymal tumors and one malignant tumor, the basal cell carcinoma of the scrotum described herein.
RESULTS: A 52-year-old patient with no remarkable urological or dermatological history, complained of an excrescence in the right hemiscrotum that he had noted for several years. A clinical diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma of the scrotum was made and the lesion was surgically excised. Pathological analysis of the surgical specimen confirmed

BACKGROUND: The peak incidence of basal cell carcinoma occurs in the seventh decade of life and is rare in children. When found in the pediatric age group, basal cell carcinoma is usually associated with a genetic defect, such as basal cell nevus syndrome, xeroderma pigmentosum, or nevus sebaceus. In areas of intense UV radiation exposure, such as the southwestern United States, children may be at increased risk of developing this malignancy de novo.
OBSERVATIONS: Three children (2 boys, aged 8 and 16 years, and an 11-year-old girl) from Tucson, Ariz, with isolated basal cell carcinoma unasso

In the present study, the immunophenotype of basal cell carcinoma was analysed in comparison with human vellus hair follicular keratinocytes. We also established the lectin binding profile of basal cell carcinoma and human vellus hair follicles (VHF), using several lectins with different sugar specificities. Our findings showed an almost identical immunohistochemical profile for basal cell carcinoma and the suprabulbar region of the outer root sheath of VHF, whereas other follicular compartments such as the bulbar, the isthmus or the supraseboglandular regions did not correlate. In particular,

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are very frequent cutaneous cancers, often located on the face. Cure rates with surgery and radiotherapy are high, but these treatments have never been compared prospectively. A randomized trial was initiated in 1982 to compare surgery and radiotherapy in the treatment of primary BCC of the face measuring less than 4 cm. The primary end point was the failure rate (persistent or recurrent disease) after 4 years of follow-up. The secondary end point was the cosmetic results assessed by the patient, the dermatologist and three persons not involved in the trial. In the

INTRODUCTION: Although basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common skin cancer and usually considered as 'easy-to-treat,' locally advanced BCC (laBCC) and metastatic BCC (mBCC) are rather exceptional and often more 'difficult-to-treat.' They load a high burden on the quality of life (QoL) of the patients, often elderly and frail individuals. Several management options are possible, varying from supportive therapy without any therapeutic intervention until anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) immunotherapy, such as cemiplimab, either administered intravenously or intralesional. Various methods of reconstructing skin defects in the medial canthal region have been reported. We report 2 skin flaps for the upper and lower eyelids designed to reconstruct soft tissue defects in the medial canthal region based on the approach used for the orbit during surgeries for facial bone fractures. The skin flap was elevated without tension until it reached the defect. The skin flaps of the upper and lower eyelids were moved around the defect as rotational flaps and sutured. Two patients with skin defects in the medial canthal region after basal cell carcinoma resection were treated w
