Myxoid change of the myometrium and cervical stroma: description of a hitherto unreported non-neoplastic phenomenon with discussion of myxoid uterine lesions.

We report 3 cases of a hitherto undescribed phenomenon in women aged 46 to 49 in which there was replacement of the myometrium or cervical stroma by an accumulation of hypocellular myxoid stromal material containing bland spindle-shaped cells and small blood vessels. In all cases, this change was conspicuous, and in 2 it was multifocal and widespread, resulting in consideration of an infiltrative myxoid mesenchymal neoplasm. Immunohistochemistry revealed a characteristic immunophenotype with diffuse strong positivity with CD34 and CD10 but no immunoreactivity with the smooth muscle markers des

Metastasizing seminal vesicle adenocarcinoma in a Wistar rat.

An adenocarcinoma in the seminal vesicles of a 15-month-old male Wistar rat from a 30-month inhalation study is described. The rat was killed because of cachexia, apathy and a large palpable mass in the abdominal cavity. Macroscopic examination of the abdominal cavity revealed a 3.8 cm x 3.2 cm yellow-grey to pink mass, firm to soft in consistency. The cut section revealed cystic spaces. Histologically, the mass consisted of epithelial cells arranged in glandular and solid patterns with abundant amounts of connective tissue. Epithelial tumour cells were round-to-cylindrical with round-to-oval

Abdominal and pelvic tumors with musculoskeletal histology.

This article is a case-based review of the broad spectrum of tumors with musculoskeletal histology that can arise in the abdomen or pelvis and involve the soft tissues, muscle, and bone. In this article, pathology-proven cases are presented with a focus on radiographic, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography-computed tomography findings. The imaging features that differentiate tumors with musculoskeletal histology from more common abdominal tumors are discussed. Representative cases include malignant fibrous histiocytoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma

Bilateral femoral neck fractures and 11 rib fractures unmask tumour-induced osteomalacia caused by a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours (PMTs) are rare benign tumours that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), leading to phosphate wasting, disordered vitamin D metabolism and impaired bone mineralisation, clinically known as tumour-induced osteomalacia. PMTs are frequently misdiagnosed due to rarity and non-specific presentation. We report a case of a male in his 60s who presented to the hospital with 7 years of progressive muscle weakness and diffuse pain, resulting in inability to walk. His work-up was significant for hypophosphataemia with imaging showing chronic bilateral femoral neck

Burosumab treatment of tumour-induced osteomalacia from a rib lesion.

Tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare cause of acquired hypophosphataemia most often due to paraneoplastic overproduction of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23). A woman in her 60s presented with an 18 month history of insidious back, knee and ankle pain, and progressive weakness. Biochemistry revealed low serum phosphate and a bone scan showed diffuse bony lesions, initially suspected to be metastatic sarcoma given her history of uterine sarcoma. However, a positron emission tomography scan identified a solitary destructive lytic lesion in the right posterior second rib. Endocrine work

Locally Aggressive Connective Tissue Tumors.

In this review, we highlight the complexities of the natural history, biology, and clinical management of three intermediate connective tissue tumors: desmoid tumor (DT) or aggressive fibromatosis, tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) or diffuse-type pigmented villonodular synovitis (dtPVNS), and giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB). Intermediate histologies include tumors of both soft tissue and bone origin and are locally aggressive and rarely metastatic. Some common aspects to these tumors are that they can be locally infiltrative and/or impinge on critical organs, which leads to disfigurement,

Intracellular versican expression in mesenchymal spindle cell tumors contrasts with extracellular expression in epithelial and other tumors--a tissue microarray-based study.

Versican is a large chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan that is an integral component of the extracellular matrix protein. It regulates cell proliferation, adhesion, and migration, and is expressed in a variety of normal tissues and tumors. We studied the pattern of versican expression in various epithelial, mesenchymal, neural, and hematopoietic tumors using immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays. The primary antibody used was mouse monoclonal antibody to versican (clone 8S270, 1:4000, US Biological). Sections from 3 healing wounds were also included to demonstrate versican expression in rea

151 endoprosthetic reconstructions for patients with primary tumors involving bone.

As part of the UCLA limb salvage program, 151 patients received 151 endoprostheses for primary tumors involving bone. Follow-up of all patients was to death (56), revision (21), or a minimum two years for the 74 additional survivors (range: 24-114 months; mean: 52 months). Endoprosthetic replacements were of the distal femur (81), proximal femur (19), proximal humerus (13), proximal tibia (11), scapula (11), total femur (8), total humerus (4), intercalary prostheses (2), and one each of the distal humerus and the pelvis. There were three soft tissue sarcomas, five benign bone lesions, and 143

Testicular cavernous hemangioma associated with testicular torsion - case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular neoplasms that are derived from connective tissue, blood vessels and musculature are uncommon and intra-testicular tumors of vascular origin are extremely rare; both are benign in nature. Testicular hemangioma is exceedingly rare and typically occurs in patients younger than 20 years, the age in which a primary germ cell tumor of the testis may present, necessitating a radical approach to management with orchidectomy, although potential conservative focal partial surgical excision is desirable. Hemangiomas of the testis have a similar sonographic and magnetic resonance

RT-PCR analysis for FGF23 using paraffin sections in the diagnosis of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors with and without known tumor induced osteomalacia.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors of the mixed connective tissue type (PMTMCT) are extremely rare, histologically distinctive neoplasms, which cause tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) in most cases through the elaboration of a phosphaturic hormone, fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23). Rarely, identical tumors without known TIO may be observed. We studied a large group of PMTMCT for expression of FGF23, using a novel reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay for FGF23 in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Twenty-nine PMTMCT (17 with and 12 without TIO) and 23 non-PMTMCT

Neoplasms of the upper urinary tract: a review with focus on urothelial carcinoma of the pelvicalyceal system and aspects related to its diagnosis and reporting.

Tumors of the renal pelvis account for approximately 7% to 8% of all renal malignancies, greater than 90% of these are of urothelial (transitional cell) origin. These tumors more typically occur in the sixth to eight decade with a slight male preponderance. Varying risk factors for urothelial carcinomas of the upper tract are recognized including environmental and occupational hazards, chemotherapeutic exposure, and previous history of urinary bladder or ureteral carcinomas. Tumor multifocality is frequent and additional tumors may arise in the ureter, bladder, or on the contralateral side. Th

Neoadjuvant treatment of locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma of the limbs: which treatment to choose?

Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) form a heterogeneous group of malignant neoplasms arising in the mesenchymal connective tissues. They can develop at any anatomic site but 60% occur in the extremities. Initially, treatment of STS relied solely on excision. In the 1970s, Enneking et al. developed the concept of compartmental resection to reduce the local failure rate. Later, Rosenberg et al. demonstrated, in a randomized study, that there was no difference in local tumor control and disease-free survival (DFS) in patients treated with amputation versus limb-saving surgery followed by 50-70 Gy extern

Connect MDS/AML: design of the myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia disease registry, a prospective observational cohort study.

BackgroundMyelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are myeloid neoplasms in which outgrowth of neoplastic clones disrupts normal hematopoiesis. Some patients with unexplained persistent cytopenias may not meet minimal diagnostic criteria for MDS but an alternate diagnosis is not apparent; the term idiopathic cytopenia of undetermined significance (ICUS) has been used to describe this state. MDS and AML occur primarily in older patients who are often treated outside the clinical trial setting. Consequently, our understanding of the patterns of diagnostic evaluation, mana
