Relationship of metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma to calcitonin content of pheochromocytomas: an immunohistochemical study.

Immunoperoxidase studies have been utilized to investigate further the previously reported presence of immunoassayable calcitonin in pheochromocytoma tissue from some patients with MEN II syndromes. We have been able to demonstrate calcitonin in pheochromocytoma tissue only in two patients with MEN II syndromes in whom the pheochromocytomas contained metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma. In both cases, the calcitonin was present only in the medullary carcinoma. We have not been able to demonstrate immunoreactive calcitonin in normal adrenal glands or in pheochromocytomas of other patients wi

Synchronous primary mucinous adenocarcinomas in the descending colon and perianal glands.

The descending colon is a relatively rare site for mucinous adenocarcinoma. Anal ductal malignancy and multiple primary coloperianal mucinous adenocarcinomas are also rare. We have described the unusual finding of multiple primary synchronous mucinous adenocarcinomas in the descending colon and perianal glands. There was no evidence of any metastasis from the Dukes B lesion in the descending colon.

[Malignant lymphoma present almost simultaneously in two brothers (author's transl)].

A diagnosis of poorly differentiated, nodular, lymphocytic malignant lymphoma was made in two brothers. One had been operated 10 years earlier for an adenocarcinoma of the descending colon. In addition, another brother had died from a primary tumor of the liver. Although a genetic factor is not proved, the case is suggestive.

Suspected multiple primary tumors of the lacrimal and parotid glands.

A 63-year-old man had apparent primary tumors of the lacrimal and parotid glands. Initially an adenocarcinoma of ectopic lacrimal gland origin was suspected following biopsy of a mass in the left orbit. The patient received radiation therapy to this area and showed no recurrence of the original lesion or development of other tumors for a period of 27 months. At that time, the patient returned with a mass in the left preauricular area. This was surgically resected and found to be an adenocarcinoma of the left parotid gland. Both tumors were histologically similar, mucin-secreting adenocarcinoma

Polymyositis in a patient with multiple neoplasms.

A 64 year old woman with a past history of panhysterectomy and oophorectomy for carcinoma of the body of the uterus (1950) and partial colectomy for carcinoma of the colon (1971), presented in 1972 with severe weakness of the proximal girdle muscles and histological evidence of polymyositis. A detailed search disclosed no tumor and she was treated with prednisone. Two years later, investigations for iron deficiency anemia revealed two polyps in the colon. Pathological examination of the resected colon disclosed two separate foci of adenocarcinoma and a number of adenomatous polyps. Three month

Multiple lipomas of the stomach and duodenum.

A patient complaining of epigastric distress was found to have multiple gastroduodenal lipomas. Although the roentgenologic findings were both bizzare and initially confusing, close scrutinization of the abnormalities suggested a correct diagnosis.

A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma with massive invasion to the liver and multiorgan causing acute liver failure.

INTRODUCTION: Acute liver failure (ALF) due to a malignant neoplasm is rare. Here, we present a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) with massive invasion to the liver and multi-organ causing ALF that resulted in a poor outcome. A 56-year-old man was referred to our hospital for ALF of unknown cause. Abdominal imaging studies revealed hepatomegaly with multiple intrahepatic lesions. The patient also showed disseminated intravascular coagulation. Despite administration of prednisolone for the ALF, he died suddenly of respiratory failure on day 3 after admission. Autopsy showed a markedly enla

Characteristics and Outcomes of Second Malignant Neoplasms after Childhood Cancer Treatment: Multi-Center Retrospective Survey.

This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics and outcomes of second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in survivors of childhood cancer from multiple institutions in Korea. A total of 102 patients from 11 institutions who developed SMN after childhood cancer treatment between 1998 and 2011 were retrospectively enrolled. The most common primary malignant neoplasms (PMNs) were central nervous system (CNS) tumors (n = 17), followed by acute lymphoblastic leukemia (n = 16), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 13), and osteosarcoma (n = 12). The most common SMNs were therapy-related myeloid neo

[Multiple cartilaginous exostoses with polyposis of stomach and colon: a new, hereditary combination different from Gardner's syndrome (author's transl)].

Multiple cartilaginous exostoses were found in a 41-year-old man and his two sons, aged 11 and 15 years. The older boy had extensive polyposis of the sigmoid colon and gastric antrum, his brother had radiological changes suspicious of sigmoid polyposis, while there was no radiological evidence of polyposis in the father. None of them had any symptoms of polyposis. The described combination of findings suggests a separate entity from Gardner's syndrome, perhaps on the basis of a combined dominant gene inheritance. In case of multiple exostoses radiological and endoscopic examination of the gast

Association of synchronous medullary and papillary thyroid carcinomas with primary hyperparathyroidism: first case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of a patient with symptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism who was found, through a thorough radiological investigation, to also have papillary and medullary thyroid carcinomas. CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old female was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism. A further radiological investigation found suspicious areas within both thyroid lobes that were later diagnosed as foci of papillary and medullary thyroid carcinomas. Appropriate treatment was commenced. Reports of similar occurrences of synchronous thyroid and parathyroid pathologies are discussed. CONCLUSION

Intradural extramedullary double primary ependymoma and meningioma rare condition: Case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Ependymomas are commonly prevalent intramedullary neoplasms in adults, with hardly any cases of exophytic extramedullary ependymoma being reported. Meningiomas, on the contrary, are one of the most common intradural extramedullary (IDEM) tumors. However, the occurrence of both IDEM tumors simultaneously is extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old female who presented with pain and numbness in both lower limbs, and symptoms rapidly progressed over the past 5 months. DIAGNOSIS: Based on the patient's clinical symptoms and imaging features, we conducted pathological examinatio

Mammary Carcinoma Metastasizing to Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Rare Example of Tumor-to-Tumor Metastasis.

IntroductionSimultaneous occurrence of multiple primary cancers is rare, and even rarer is the phenomenon of one cancer metastasizing to another. Here, we present a mammary carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) diagnosed concurrently while presenting as a tumor-to-tumor metastasis.Case ReportA 79-year-old woman with right pleural effusion underwent thoracocentesis. Cytological and immunohistochemical examination revealed malignant cells suggestive of adenocarcinoma, mammary origin. Computed tomography of abdomen and chest revealed a 1.6 cm right breast nodule, 4.4 cm right axillary mass, an
