[The use of the double-J catheter as urinary obstruction prophylaxis in lithiasis].

Our experience in the use of the double-J catheter in the prevention and treatment of urinary obstruction in stone disease is presented. This retrospective study spans the period January, 1985 to June 1989. Fifty-five double-J catheters were placed in 51 patients (catheter replacement was required in 4). Catheter placement was done antegradely in 17, retrogradely in 34 and intraoperatively in 4 cases. The indications were for treatment post-ESWL in 45 patients, stone remnants following percutaneous nephrolithotomy in 1, post-ureteroscopy in 2, and after open surgery in 2 patients. Complication

Limitations of standard scoring systems in predicting PCNL outcomes for horseshoe kidney patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate and compare the predictive performance of three widely used nephrolithometry scoring systems—S.T.O.N.E., CROES, and Guy’s Stone Score—in determining stone-free outcomes following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in patients with horseshoe kidney (HSK), a population in which the utility of these models remains uncertain. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 64 adult patients with HSK who underwent unilateral PCNL between January 2017 and December 2024 were included. Preoperative non-contrast CT images were used to assess S.T.O.N.E., CROES

Sepsis associated delirium mimicking postoperative delirium as the initial presenting symptom of urosepsis in a patient who underwent nephrolithotomy.

We report a case of 70 years old male who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy for renal calculi. After an uneventful recovery from anaesthesia, the patient developed delirium which manifested as restlessness, agitation, irritability and combative behavior. All other clinical parameters including arterial blood gas, chest X-ray and core temperature were normal and the patient remained haemodynamically stable. But 45 min later the patient developed florid manifestations of septic shock. He was aggressively managed in a protocolized manner as per the Surviving Sepsis Guidelines in the Critical

Cystine urinary lithiasis in Thailand: a report of five cases.

Cystine urinary stone is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease, frequently recurring and resisting fragmentation by Shockwave lithotripsy. As cases have never been reported before in Thailand, five cases of renal cystine stones at Ramathibodi Hospital were reported. Two were in the same family. In all cases the stones were removed by open surgery or percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Postoperatively, all the stones were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy for cystine. In two cases, cystine stones were also identified by scanning electron microscopy. Urine was analyzed for cystine by sodium cyanid

New techniques on the horizon: interventional radiology and interventional endoscopy of the urinary tract ('endourology').

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Interventional radiology and interventional endoscopy (IR/IE) uses contemporary imaging modalities, such as fluoroscopy and endoscopy, to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in various body parts. The majority of IR/IE procedures currently undertaken in veterinary medicine pertain to the urinary tract, and this subspecialty has been termed 'endourology'. This technology treats diseases of the renal pelvis, ureter(s), bladder and urethra. In human medicine, endourology has overtaken traditional open urologic surgery in the past 20-30 years, and in veterinary medic

Percutaneous nephrostomy in conjunction with ESWL in treatment of nephrolithiasis.

The use of percutaneous nephrostomies (PCNs) in 1456 patients (1660 kidneys) treated with extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was evaluated. In this group, 138 PCNs (130 patients) were performed in 133 kidneys. Forty-seven percent of PCNs were placed in patients with staghorn calculi; 24% were for stones in the renal pelvis, and 20% for ureteral stones. The most common indication for PCN was fever and obstruction (57%). In 15%, the indications were failure to decompress an obstructed system from a retrograde direction, clogged double-J ureteral stents, and perforation of the ureter. P

Pelvic kidney: associated diseases and treatment.

The incidence of pelvic kidney has been approximated at between 1 in 2200 and 1 in 3000. The ectopic kidney is thought to be no more susceptible to disease than the normally positioned kidney, except for the development of calculi and hydronephrosis. Because of the greater risk of injuring aberrant vessels or overlying abdominal viscera and nerves, the pelvic kidney presents special treatment challenges. Alternative approaches to treating nephrolithiasis may yield better outcomes. The tortuous ureter often associated with a pelvic kidney hinders deflection of the flexible ureteroscope, potenti

Utility and challenges of flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheath (FANS) vs. suction mini-PCNL in children: A comparative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric kidney stone disease presents unique challenges, necessitating minimally invasive techniques. Suction-assisted mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (SM-PCNL) is a well-established treatment, while flexible ureteroscopy using a flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheath (FANS-UAS) is an emerging technique. Both integrate suction to improve stone clearance, reduce intrarenal pressure, and enhance visualization. However, comparative evidence in children remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study hypothesized that FANS-UAS would demonstrate comparable stone-free rates

Metabolic and surgical predictors in horseshoe and pelvic ectopic kidneys.

BACKGROUND: Horseshoe kidney (HSK) and pelvic ectopic kidney (PEK) are congenital anomalies linked to impaired urinary drainage and a higher risk of nephrolithiasis. Evidence regarding metabolic profiles and surgical outcomes in these groups remains sparse. This study assessed predictors of postoperative stone clearance and 12-month recurrence in patients with HSK and PEK undergoing endourological procedures intervention. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 50 consecutive patients with CT-confirmed HSK or PEK treated with retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) or mini-percutaneous
