Components of neural system in airways interact, and activation of one neural path can influence the releasing of mediators in other neural path. Electrophysiological investigations of mediators-influenced ion transport are one of many possibilities to study interactions between neural system in airway and airway's epithelium. Electrical transepithelial potential difference (PD) and transepithelial resistance (R) of isolated rabbit's tracheal wall were measured by using classical Ussing's method. Two types of stimulations applied on the tracheal mucosa were estimated; namely, the stimulation o

Although cognitive inhibition and response inhibition fall under the umbrella term of inhibition, the question remains whether the two aspects of inhibition engage shared or distinct brain regions. The current study is one of the first to examine the neural underpinnings of cognitive inhibition (e.g. the Stroop incongruency effect) and response inhibition (e.g. "no-go" response) within a single task. Adult participants (n = 77) completed an adapted version of the Simon Task in a 3T MRI scanner. The results demonstrated that cognitive and response inhibition recruited a group of overlapping bra

AIMS: Excessive exercise impairs cognition and elevates late-life cognitive risk. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates the neural mechanisms through which high-intensity endurance exercise induces cognitive deficits.
METHODS: Mice underwent high-loading intensity exercise (HLIE) with a 7-day treadmill procedure (25 m/min, 90 min/day). A battery of behavioral tests was conducted to assess cognitive performance, including the Morris Water Maze, Novel Object Recognition, and Y Maze. fMRI and c-Fos activity mapping were employed to identify key brain regions

Electroacupuncture at Neiguan point (PC6) effectively ameliorates tachycardia. However, very little is known about the neural pathway mechanism underlying the effect of electroacupuncture at PC6 in stress-induced tachycardia. Here, we investigate whether there exists a dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH)-raphe pallidus (RP)-heart pathway to mediate the effect of electroacupuncture at PC6. The virus tracing results show that the heart is innervated by the neurons in DMH and RP, and the neurons of DMH project to RP. Chemogenetic inhibition of RP projecting DMH neurons reverses the cardiac autonomic i

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with elevated levels of impulsivity, inattention, and distractibility, which may be related to underlying neurobiological dysfunction due to haploinsufficiency for genes involved in dopaminergic neurotransmission (i.e. catechol-O-methyltransferase). The Stop-signal task has been employed to probe the neural circuitry involved in response inhibition (RI); findings in healthy individuals indicate that a fronto-basal ganglia network underlies successful inhibition of a prepotent motor response. However, little is known about the neurobiological su

fMRI studies show activation of cerebellum during transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS); however, there is no evidence whether taVNS induced activation of the cerebellum translates to the cerebellar closed loops involved in motor functions. We assessed the propensity of taVNS at 25 Hz (taVNS25) and 100 Hz (taVNS100) to modulate cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways using transcranial magnetic stimulation. In our double blind within-subjects study thirty-two participants completed one visit during which cerebellar brain inhibition (CBI) was assessed at baseline (no stimulation)

The cerebellum receives and integrates a large amount of sensory information that is important for motor coordination and learning. The aim of the present work was to investigate whether peripheral nerve and cerebellum paired associative stimulation (cPAS) could induce plasticity in both the cerebellum and the cortex. In a cross-over design, we delivered right median nerve electrical stimulation 25 or 10 ms before applying transcranial magnetic stimulation over the cerebellum. We assessed changes in motor evoked potentials (MEP), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), short-afferent inhibition

The early motor manifestations of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), while rarely documented, reflect failure of adaptive complex motor skills. The development of these skills correlates with progressive evolution of a direct corticomotoneuronal system that is unique to primates and markedly enhanced in humans. The failure of this system in ALS may translate into the split hand presentation, gait disturbance, split leg syndrome and bulbar symptomatology related to vocalisation and breathing, and possibly diffuse fasciculation, characteristic of ALS. Clinical neurophysiology of the b

Spontaneous firing rates of neurons in the central auditory pathway, such as in the inferior colliculus, are known to be increased after cochlear trauma. This so-called hyperactivity is thought to be involved in the generation of tinnitus, a phantom auditory perception. Recent research in an animal model suggests behavioural signs of tinnitus can be significantly reduced by silencing or removal of the paraflocculus (PF) of the cerebellum. The current study investigated the effects of acute PF removal on spontaneous firing rates recorded from single neurons in the right inferior colliculus of g

OBJECTIVE: Involvement of pyramidal cells and/or changes in excitability of brain areas remote from an ischemic stroke has been demonstrated. Since in Fabry disease (FD), specific cerebrovascular lesions are present, we thought to investigate motor cortex excitability, using transcranial magnetic stimulation.
METHODS: Resting (RMT) and active (AMT) motor threshold, input-output curve (IN-OUT), central motor conduction time (CMCT), cortical silent period (cSP), short and long interval intracortical inhibition (SICI and LICI), intracortical facilitation (ICF), short interval intracortical facil

Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurologic diseases. Increased numbers of torpedoes and Purkinje cell (PC) loss have been documented in the brains of patients with ET. We recently observed a dense and tangled appearance ("hairiness") of the basket cell axonal plexuses that surround PC soma in Bielschowsky preparations of cerebellar cortex in ET brains. Here, we assessed basket cell "hairiness" in 37 ET (32 cerebellar ET; 5 Lewy body variant ET), 21 nondisease control, and 48 disease control brains using a semiquantitative scale. In 8 cerebellar ET cases (25%), there were high b

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurogenetic disorder leading to striatal atrophy, characterized by involuntary movements. Voluntary movements also deteriorate, but the neurophysiological mechanisms are less understood. We investigated voluntary movement execution and its neural correlates by means of movement-related potentials (MRPs) in symptomatic HD (HD), presymptomatic HD (pHD) and controls. Reaction times (RTs) revealed hand differences in controls and HD, but not in pHDs. Response-locked MRPs above the contralateral primary motor area (M1) were similar across all groups. Y

The current paper focuses on a relatively new and promising area of the study of EEG transformations during brain information processing based on the reduction of the signal to the discrete quasi-stationary segment sequences which may reflect individual brain microstates or discrete operations. In this framework, the complex brain functions require integration of several operations throughout the whole neocortex. However, the role of inhibitory brain systems in such processes is still unsettled. The effects of a single dose (30 microg/kg) of lorazepam on the operational activity of neuronal po

Several recent investigations have suggested that an important function of the frontostriatal system is inhibitory response control, and we previously reported that subchronic exposure to phencyclidine (PCP) produced deficits in inhibitory control in monkeys. The current studies were designed to examine whether subchronic administration of PCP to rats would subsequently affect the ability to inhibit conditioned responses when relationships between reward and stimuli of affective significance change. First, the effects of long-term exposure to PCP on acquisition of a novel, concurrent discrimin

Biochemical assays on microdissected samples, denervation studies, subcellular fractionation, and light and electron microscopic autoradiography of high affinity uptake have been performed to study the cellular localization of transmitter candidates in the rat hippocampal formation. High affinity uptake of glutamate and aspartate is localized in the terminals of several excitatory systems, such as the entorhino-dentate fibres (perforant path), mossy fibres (from granular cells) and pyramidal cell axons. Thus, in stratum radiatum and oriens of CA1, 85% of glutamate and asparate uptake and 40% o

General anesthesia induces a reversible loss of consciousness, yet the precise neural circuits mediating this state transition remain incompletely understood. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopaminergic (DA) neurons and the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) serotonergic (5-HT) neurons are key components of the ascending arousal system. This study investigated the existence and functional role of VTADA→DRN5-HT circuit in regulating propofol anesthesia. Using virus-mediated neural circuit tracing in DAT-Cre and TPH2-CreER transgenic mice, we demonstrated an anatomically connected circuit appositions

The integration-segregation theory proposes that early facilitation and later inhibition (i.e. inhibition of return [IOR]) in exogenous attention arises from the competition between cue-target event integration and segregation. Although widely supported behaviorally, the theory lacked direct neural evidence. Here, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in human participants with an optimized cue-target paradigm to test this account. Cued targets elicited stronger activation in the frontoparietal attention networks, including the bilateral frontal eye field (FEF), in

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in permanent motor dysfunction, and no approved therapy effectively promotes nerve regeneration. We show that engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) from photobiomodulation (PBM)-treated microglia, delivering UFL1 (the sole E3 ligase of the UFMylation system), significantly enhance neural repair after SCI. PBM (850 nm, 2.0 J/cm2) promoted microglial M2 polarization and suppressed M1. We isolated PBM-EVs and identified UFL1 as the key effector via proteomic analysis. Mechanistically, UFL1 competes with MDM2 for p53 binding, inhibiting p53 ubiquitination a

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in severe immune and metabolic disorders, aggravating neurological damage and inhibiting locomotor functional recovery. Microglia, as resident immune cells of the spinal cord, play crucial roles in maintaining neural homeostasis under physiological conditions. However, the precise role of microglia in regulating immune and metabolic functions in SCI is still unclear and is easily confused with that of macrophages. In this study, we pharmacologically depleted microglia to explore the role of microglia after SCI. We found that microglia are benefi

The central nervous system relies on a continual supply of glucose, and must be able to detect glucose levels and regulate peripheral organ functions to ensure that its energy requirements are met. Specialized glucose-sensing neurons, first described half a century ago, use glucose as a signal and modulate their firing rates as glucose levels change. Glucose-excited neurons are activated by increasing glucose concentrations, while glucose-inhibited neurons increase their firing rate as glucose concentrations fall and decrease their firing rate as glucose concentrations rise. Glucose-sensing ne
