OBJECTIVES: To describe a case of tethered cord syndrome, with special reference to the diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties.
METHODS: A case of an adult patient with tethered cord syndrome after the complications post-TURP is described. The most relevant radiological and urodynamic features are presented.
CONCLUSIONS: The tethered cord syndrome in the adult has a wide variety of symptoms. The age of onset depends on the level of cord involvement and the precipitationg factors. The urological symptoms are as varied as the urodynamic features, therefore each case must be treated independen

CASE REPORT: We describe a 69 year-old female who became ill with polio after having changed the nappies of her grandchild who, six weeks earlier, had been vaccinated with oral live-vaccine against polio. Anamnesis and neurological status with limp paralysis in both legs oblige, with their implications, that the patient be isolated initially. Proof of poliomyelitis was to be found, in addition to typical medical findings, in the virus analysis in the stool, determined by polymerase chain reaction and in the discovery of antibodies from the serum by means of a neutralisation test. The neurologi

The most common form of diabetic neuropathy is chronic, distal symmetrical sensorimotor, or predominantly sensory neuropathy; the latter is invariably associated with some degree of autonomic dysfunction. There are, however, other neuropathic patterns in diabetes mellitus that are uncommon but are important to recognize, since they may mimic many other non-neurologic diseases. This article discusses a variety of forms of mononeuropathies and diabetic proximal motor neuropathy, commonly known as diabetic amyotropy.

INTRODUCTION: Heredoataxias form a group of degenerative diseases of the nervous system, which are progressive and hand sound in particular families.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between August 1994 and September 1995. 14 patients diagnosed as having heredoataxia were studied after admission to our hospital. Eight of these had Friedrich's ataxia (group A) and 6 had other types of ataxia (group B). A standard set of investigations were done, including clinical examination, laboratory tests (such as glycaemia and a lipidogram) to evaluate coronary risk factors. A 12 lead electrocardiogram and bidimens

Diplopia is a symptom that may be the result of paralytic strabismus. The causes of paralytic strabismus are deficiencies of cranial nerves III, IV, or VI. When encountering neurogenic diplopia, the clinician must determine which ocular motor nerve is involved. The clinician must then decide whether the disturbance is in the nerve nucleus, its fascicles, along the course of the nerve in the subarachnoid space, in the cavernous sinus, or at its termination within the orbit. With proper diagnosis, identification, and localization, appropriate management may be undertaken.

A 9-year-old boy with classical features of Sjogren-Larsson syndrome was reported. He had had diffuse dry skin with ichthyotic scales since birth. The skin biopsy was compatible with ichthyosis. At the age of two he was unable to walk normally and also had learning problems. Neurological examination revealed spastic paraparesis, macular degeneration and mild mental retardation. MRI of the brain and spinal cord revealed subcortical white matter and corpus callosal lesions as well as focal cerebral atrophy and diffuse spinal cord atrophy.

The terms "multicystic encephalomalacia" and "subcortical leucomalacia" (SCL) are used to describe the presence of areas of necrosis that develop into cystic lesions inside the brain. These lesions are generally due to severe asphyxia and/or hypotension. The designation SCL can also be used to describe the extent and the seat of the lesion in the brain or to distinguish subcortical lesions from periventricular and/or combined ones. In this study we give an account of our experience with eight newborns admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit, who presented clinical-neurological alterations

The purpose of this paper is to assess how 29 different environmental factors affected Tourette symptomatology in 14 children and adolescents (6.6-14.5 years; mean 10.3) who had never received any medication for their disorder. Assessment was based on patients' responses to the Tourette Syndrome (TS) Questionnaire. Eleven different factors were associated with a decrease in symptoms and included doctor visits, talking to friends, and reading for pleasure. The 10 factors reported to have no impact on Tourette symptomatology included various foods, weather, and living away from home. Seventeen f

Patients who have undergone acoustic neuroma surgery require expert, comprehensive nursing care. This article includes a standard of care and tables about neurological assessment, potential complications, home safety and discharge instructions. A holistic, multidisciplinary approach can enable nurses to promote the recovery of acoustic neuroma patients and ultimately improve their outcomes.

A 72-year-old female presented with non-communicating hydrocephalus due to megadolichobasilar artery manifesting as drowsiness and Parinaud's sign. Neuroimaging demonstrated enlarged third and lateral ventricles and the tortuous, elongated basilar artery compressing the interpeduncular segment of the midbrain, resulting in occlusion of the aqueduct. Emergency ventricular drainage subsequently replaced by a ventriculoperitoneal shunt achieved complete resolution of the enlarged ventricles. This is the first report of megadolichobasilar artery causing this type of obstruction and manifesting as

Reports of 62 cases with a movement disorder associated with a focal lesion in the thalamus and/or subthalamic region were analyzed. Thirty-three cases had a lesion confined to the thalamus. Sixteen cases had a thalamic lesion extending into the subthalamic region and/or midbrain. Thirteen cases had a lesion in the subthalamic region or a subthalamic lesion extending into the midbrain. Nineteen cases with dystonia, 18 with asterixis, 17 with ballism-chorea, three with paroxysmal dystonia, and five with clonic or myorhythmic movements have been described. No case with isolated tremor has been d

A review of the neurologic complications of Epstein-Barr viral (EBV) infections is presented. EBV has been associated with a wide range of acute neurologic diseases in children. Encephalitis, meningitis, cranial nerve palsies, mononeuropathies, and many other neurologic ailments have been described since the confirmation of EBV as the etiology of infectious mononucleosis. It is important to recognize that EBV can cause a myriad of neurologic illnesses with or without the stigmata of infectious mononucleosis.

Numerous normal age-related changes that occur in the nervous system differ more quantitatively than qualitatively from certain common neurological diseases of elder individuals. Changes in the cranial nerve examination primarily relate to an age-related decline in sensory functions, especially of vision and hearing, and to a restriction in the range of eye movements, especially vertically. A progressive decline in the bulk and strength of muscles and in the speed and coordination of movements has long been recognised as an accompaniment of aging. Posture and gait show conspicuous changes with

A dramatic improvement in a patient with tardive dystonia was obtained with verapamil after the failure of other medicines. The use of verapamil or other calcium-channel blockers should be considered when treating drug-induced movement disorders.
