Global change-driven plant adaptive strategies and interspecific interaction networks: from molecular regulation to ecological management.

Global change drivers, including climate warming, elevated CO2, nitrogen deposition, extreme climate events, heavy metal pollution, and biological invasions, interact in complex ways to reconfigure terrestrial ecosystems. This review synthesizes recent advances to develop a framework linking plant molecular responses to ecosystem management. We first examine how abiotic stressors reshape plant physiology and traits through defense signaling, secondary metabolite synthesis, and life-history adjustments. We then analyze how these plant-level changes cascade upward to restructure interspecific ne

Oxidative Stress in Health and Disease.

Oxidative stress, resulting from the excessive intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and other free radical species, contributes to the onset and progression of various diseases, including diabetes, obesity, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson's disease (PD). Oxidative stress is also implicated in cardiovascular disease and cancer. Exacerbated oxidative stress leads to the accelerated formation of advanced glycation end p

Changes in Microbial Diversity, Soil Function, and Plant Biomass of Cotton Rhizosphere Soil Under the Influence of Chlorpyrifos.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF), a common organophosphorus pesticide, is extensively used in agricultural practices. However, we lack sound evidence for the linkage between soil microbial diversity, soil function, and plant biomass under the influence of CPF, which prevents us from assessing the actual impact of CPF on agricultural production. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing to test the effects of CPF on soil microbial diversity, soil function, and cotton biomass in indoor pot experiments. The use of CPF leads to a significant reduction in cotton biomass until the concentration of CPF use

Auxiliary voltage enhanced microbial methane oxidation co-driven by nitrite and sulfate reduction.

In this study, single-chamber bioelectrochemical reactors (EMNS) were used to investigate the methane oxidation driven by sulfate and nitrite reduction with the auxiliary voltage. Results showed that the methane oxidation was simultaneously driven by sulfate and nitrite reduction, with more methane being converted using the auxiliary voltage. When the voltage was 1.6 V, the maximum removal rate was achieved at 8.05 mg L-1 d-1. Carbon dioxide and methanol were the main products of methane oxidation. Simultaneously, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, sulfur ions, and hydrogen sulfide were detected as prod

Exhaust emissions from diesel engines fueled by different blends with the addition of nanomodifiers and hydrotreated vegetable oil HVO.

Diesel emissions have a significant impact on the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution, smog and global warming. As a result, diesel exhaust is dangerous to human health. While emissions reduction efforts have often focused on changing engine design or improving aftertreatment, diesel fuel modifications can also play an important role in improving engine efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions. The aim of this work was to examine the potential for emissions reductions under real-world conditions when employing fuel additives. Three different additives were examined, consisting of hydrot

Large-scale demonstration of the sulfate reduction autotrophic denitrification nitrification integrated (SANI(®)) process in saline sewage treatment.

Recently, the Sulfate reduction Autotrophic denitrification Nitrification Integrated (SANI(®)) process was developed for the removal of organics and nitrogen with sludge minimization in the treatment of saline sewage (with a Sulfate-to-COD ratio > 0.5 mg SO4(2-)-S/mg COD) generated from seawater used for toilet flushing or salt water intrusion. Previously investigated in lab- and pilot-scale, this process has now been scaled up to a 800-1000 m(3)/d full-scale demonstration plant. In this paper, the design and operating parameters of the SANI demo plant built in Hong Kong are analyzed. After a

Comparative study of advanced hydrogen liquefaction using triple cascade mixed refrigerant cycles with integrated energy exergy economic and environmental analysis.

Hydrogen, as a clean energy source, is recognized as a pivotal energy carrier in the global transition to sustainable energy systems and serves as a crucial pathway for energy storage and efficient utilization within cryogenic systems. Hydrogen liquefaction is one of the most promising methods for increasing its energy density, enabling more efficient storage, transportation, and utilization in large-scale energy systems. However, substantial challenges persist, particularly regarding the high energy consumption associated with the liquefaction process. This study addresses these challenges by

Celecoxib inhibits growth of human autosomal dominant polycystic kidney cyst-lining epithelial cells through the VEGF/Raf/MAPK/ERK signaling pathway.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a progressive chronic kidney disease. To date there are no effective medicines to halt development and growth of cysts. In the present study, we explored novel effects of celecoxib (CXB), a COX-2 specific inhibitor, on primary cultures of human ADPKD cyst-lining epithelial cells. Primary cultures of ADPKD cyst-lining epithelial cells were obtained from five patients. Effects of CXB were measured by various assays to detect BrdU incorporation, apoptosis and proliferation in vitro. Additionally, effects of CXB on kidney weight, the cyst ind

Understanding the nature of atmospheric acid processing of mineral dusts in supplying bioavailable phosphorus to the oceans.

Acidification of airborne dust particles can dramatically increase the amount of bioavailable phosphorus (P) deposited on the surface ocean. Experiments were conducted to simulate atmospheric processes and determine the dissolution behavior of P compounds in dust and dust precursor soils. Acid dissolution occurs rapidly (seconds to minutes) and is controlled by the amount of H+ ions present. For H+ < 10-4 mol/g of dust, 1-10% of the total P is dissolved, largely as a result of dissolution of surface-bound forms. At H+ > 10-4 mol/g of dust, the amount of P (and calcium) released has a direct pr

Responses of Soil Organic Matter and Minerals to Winter and Growing Season Climate Change.

Changes to soil organic matter (SOM) in response to warming temperatures and a shrinking snowpack may exacerbate climate change due to carbon (C) cycle feedbacks. Winter is warming more rapidly than the growing season, resulting in declines in snowpack quantity and duration and leaving the soil without insulation from freezing air temperatures. Frozen soil can induce root and microbial mortality and create a barrier to O2 diffusion, which can impact SOM inputs, SOM storage mechanisms, and soil CO2 production. At the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experime

The role of agricultural drainage, storm-events, and natural filtration on the biogeochemical cycling capacity of aquatic and sediment environments in Lake Erie's drainage basin.

Lake Erie is the most at risk of the Great Lakes for degraded water quality due to non-point source pollution caused by agricultural activities in the lake's watershed. The extent and temporal patterns of nutrient loading from these agricultural activities is influenced by the timing of agronomic events, precipitation events, and water flow through areas of natural filtration within the watershed. Downstream impacts of these nutrient loading events may be moderated by the co-loading of functionally relevant biogeochemical cycling microbial communities from agricultural soils. This study quanti

Ecosystem Multifunctionality Regulated by Soil Microbial Activity and Indicator Taxa Versus Biodiversity for Industrial Solar Facilities on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The drive towards carbon neutrality has prompted the worldwide expansion of utility-scale solar facilities. Previous studies have reported the positive effects of solar facilities' installation on pasture productivity and biodiversity in arid regions. However, our understanding of how solar facilities influence a wide range of ecosystem functions simultaneously, and the relative contributions of soil microbial attributes, remains incomplete. To address this gap, we assessed the changes in ecosystem multifunctionality following solar facility installation in an alpine desert grassland in the Qi

Microbes-mediated sulphur cycling in soil: Impact on soil fertility, crop production and environmental sustainability.

Reduction in soil fertility and depletion of natural resources due to current intensive agricultural practices along with climate changes are the major constraints for crop productivity and global food security. Diverse microbial populations' inhabiting the soil and rhizosphere participate in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and thereby, improve soil fertility and plant health, and reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fertilizers on the environment. Sulphur is 4th most common crucial macronutrient required by all organisms including plants, animals, humans and microorganisms. Effective st

Drivers of Seasonal Variations of Greenhouse Gas Fluxes from Sediment-Water and Water-Atmosphere Interfaces in Different Fish Culture Ponds.

Aquaculture ponds constitute critical greenhouse gas (GHG) emission hotspots, yet limited research has concurrently quantified CH4, CO2, and N2O fluxes across sediment-water (SWI) and water-atmosphere (WAI) interfaces and their environmental and microbial controls under different aquaculture regimes. This study explored seasonal and diurnal GHG variations in four subtropical freshwater aquaculture ponds (Crucian carp, CruC; Largemouth bass, LarB; Channel catfish, ChaC; and in-pond raceway system of channel catfish, IPRS) in eastern China. SWI dominated CH4 diffusion, with an average flux of 13

From atmosphere to river: Tracing the origins and deposition of ammonium in both PM2.5 and precipitation in Harbin.

Atmospheric ammonium (NH4+) is a key component of terrestrial nitrogen cycling that substantially impacts regional environmental pollution. However, its origins and deposition patterns remain insufficiently constrained in urban hotspots with intensive anthropogenic emissions. This study employed δ15N isotope tracing to investigate the origins and deposition of atmospheric NH4+ in Harbin, Northeast China. Using PM2.5, precipitation, and surface water samples from the Songhua River, this study quantified the source contributions of the NH4+ precursor (NH3), NH4+-N deposition fluxes, and their de

Alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotroph community assembly and enhances putative recruitment of diazotrophs from legume soils to sedge soils.

INTRODUCTION: Biological nitrogen fixation is a key microbial process sustaining nutrient cycling and plant productivity in nitrogen-limited alpine meadows. However, how alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotrophic community composition and assembly across different plant species, and how these changes relate to aboveground biomass, remain poorly understood. METHODS: We used the nifH gene as a molecular marker to investigate diazotrophic communities in rhizosphere and bulk soils associated with the legume Oxytropis ochrocephala, and the sedge Carex alatauensis in undegraded and degraded al

Mobility of nitrogen in ashes and soils impacted by wildfires in northern California and Nevada.

Wildfires drastically alter biogeochemical cycling and transport of nutrient elements, including nitrogen (N), from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems, with the potential to degrade water quality. Understanding the impact of characteristics of wildfire-derived ashes and burned soils on the mobilization of N is essential for effectively managing wildfires and mitigating adverse effects on watershed functions. This study quantified the mobility of N in soils and ashes influenced by wildfires in the northern California/Nevada region in the western United States (Dixie, Beckwourth, and Caldor fires

Urban air pollution and in vitro fertilization outcomes: A Canadian retrospective study.

There is growing data to support an adverse relationship between air pollution and fertility. Many studies have shown that traffic-related air pollution, the most common source of urban air pollution in North America, has a negative effect on both spontaneous and IVF pregnancy outcomes. This single-center retrospective study is the first Canadian study to explore urban air pollution exposures and IVF/ICSI outcomes. It included autologous IVF/ICSI outcomes from both fresh (ET - n = 1756) and frozen embryo transfer (FET - n = 1535) cycles between 2000 and 2022. Air pollution data for fine partic
