Microbiome and its Association with Diseases of the Ear, Nose and Pharynx.

INTRODUCTION: The microbiome refers to the entire community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, their genes, and the environment that surrounds them. The microbiome is found in the gut, skin, and the oral and nasal cavities, and is an important interface between the human body and the environment outside. Notably, the ear, nose, and throat or pharynx microbiome remains poorly studied. Therefore, the present review discusses the association of the microbiome with various diseases of the ear, nose, and pharynx. METHODS: The literature was obtained by conducting a comprehensiv…

When the eyes and nose collide: The shared pathways of rhinoconjunctivitis.

Although allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (ARC) is highly prevalent and involves both nasal and ocular symptoms, the mechanisms proposed to conn … ared trigeminal and autonomic neural pathways allow for a rapid reflex response between the eye and nose after allergen triggers. Immune mediators, including histamine and eosinophilic proteins, can also diffuse both locally and systemically to promote cross-tissue inflammation. This appraisal takes a novel approach by exploring an aspect of ARC often …

Carolyn's Window Approach for frontal sinus in Asian Noses.

PURPOSE: There has been concern regarding the applicability of the Carolyn’s Window Approach (CWA) to Asian patients because the nasal corridors in Asians are typically narrower externally with lower radix height compared to Western noses. This study evaluated the success rates and frontal sinus patency outcomes of the CWA in a cohort of Asian patients. METHODS: Patients (≥ 18 years) who underwent frontal sinus surgery via CWA were consecutively enrolled. Patients were followed at 3 and 6 months after surgery. Anthropometric data on nasal appearance were obtained from CT scans. The outcomes we…

The Nose Knows: Olfaction as a Metabolic Gatekeeper in Health and Disease.

Long regarded as an accessory sense, olfaction is now emerging as a metabolic architect, an active agent in energy homeostasis, appetite reg … t the digestive gates, we now find this once-overlooked sentinel wielding remarkable authority. The nose, it turns out, knows and may yet hold the key to rebalancing metabolism in a world that smells very different from the one we evolved to navigate.

Congenital Anomalies of the Nose: From Embryologic to Surgical Treatment.

The nose, a facial organ, not only plays a crucial role in olfaction and respiration but also has a major impact on the overall anatomy of the face. However, congenital anomalies affecting the nose can be challenging as they require both functional impairments and cosmetic concerns. Facial maldevelopments during the early embryonic period induce a wide-ranging nasal deformity. Understanding the etiology of these anomalies is essential for healthcare professionals involved in diagnosis, treatment, and management. Based on current literature, this review aims to present the spectrum of congenita…

A Grading System-Guided Approach to the Severely Contracted Nose.

PURPOSE: Capsular contracture is a rare but serious complication of silicone implant-based augmentation rhinoplasty. When severe, the contracture can affect all layers of the nose, causing significant scarring and disfigurement. There is currently no standardized method of evaluating contracted noses and a paucity of literature on the treatment of severe contracture. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a comprehensive grading system and treatment approach for patients with nasal contracture secondary to silicone implant-based rhinoplasty. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis on…

Unilateral Fixation of the Bony Pyramid in Deviated Nose Correction.

Deviated nose correction is one of the most challenging procedures in rhinoplasty. Recent studies proposed effectiveness of preservation techniques even for patients with crooked nose deformity, although the long-term results are still controversial. Obviously, only addressing the blocking points is not enough to achieve stable midline position in crooked nose. To ensure consistent long-term results, we proposed a unilateral suturing of the bony pyramid along with unilateral resection of the excessive bone along the lateral osteotomy line. The first results of described surgical technique have…

Staphylococcal trafficking and infection-from 'nose to gut' and back.

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic human pathogen, which is a leading cause of infections worldwide. The challenge in treating S. aureus infection is linked to the development of multidrug-resistant strains and the mechanisms employed by this pathogen to evade the human immune defenses. In addition, S. aureus can hide asymptomatically in particular 'protective' niches of the human body for prolonged periods of time. In the present review, we highlight recently gained insights in the role of the human gut as an endogenous S. aureus reservoir next to the nasopharynx and oral cavity. In ad

Incidental Radiographic Detection of a Foreign Body in the Nose of a Child.

Foreign bodies in the nasal cavity are common in children, possibly due to their curiosity to explore body openings. The purpose of this report was to describe a case of an undetected nasal foreign body in a 10-year-old girl who presented to a pediatric dentistry clinic for a routine dental examination. A foreign body in the nasal cavity was discovered during a panoramic radiographic examination. A prompt referral to the otorhinolaryngologist was critical to confirm the diagnosis and successfully remove the foreign body. This case report demonstrates that dentists can play a significant role i

Spontaneous Fracture of the Maxillary Sinus as a Consequence of Nose-Blowing.

Spontaneous fracture of the maxillary sinus without preceding trauma or pathology is extremely rare. Our patient presented with a maxillary sinus fracture related to recurrent nose-blowing, in the absence of any other cause. Although rare, spontaneous fracture of maxillary sinus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pain and swelling of the cheek and eye in elderly patients.
