PURPOSE: To describe the phenomenon of stress overload as a nursing diagnosis.
METHODS: A qualitative study using case study method was conducted with nine adults experiencing stress overload to fully describe the experience and identify possible defining characteristics. Current literature sources on stress and its related factors were examined to support stress overload as a nursing diagnosis for inclusion in the NANDA International classification.

This is an explorative and qualitative study that examines a municipal's rehabilitation program "Online Viva" (2014-2015). The questions are whether "Online Viva" improves the citizens' participatory health and whether it prevents exacerbation of COPD. "Online Viva" includes respiratory training and district nursing consultancy for elderly people with COPD. The district nurses' presence in the citizens' homes is replaced by online communication. The study involves 9 citizens and 5 health professionals. Preliminary results show that online consultations and training prevent anxiety, exacerbatio

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal motor neuron disease that occurs in 4 among 100 000 people in the United States. Individuals with ALS gradually lose their ability to control voluntary muscles, diminishing their ability to communicate. A comprehensive multidatabase search retrieved 31 qualitative research articles that addressed persons with end-of-life experiences with ALS. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied and a critical appraisal was applied for the final 8 included articles. First-person data extraction from the final articles represented emergence of 3 themes signifi

The aim of the study was to conduct a rapid assessment of breastfeeding knowledge amongst health workers in an area of high HIV prevalence. A cross-sectional survey using semi-structured questionnaires and problem-based scenarios was carried out. Responses were compared to those recommended in the World Health Organization (WHO) Breastfeeding Counselling Course. The setting was a rural area of KwaZulu Natal, with a population of 220 000 people. At the time of the study approximately 36 per cent of pregnant women were HIV-infected and no programme to prevent mother-to-child transmission was in

The aim of this study was to explore the incidence of problematic substance use (PSU) and the relationship between level of substance use, minority stress, and general stressors in a population of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) identified nurses. Methods: A national, convenience sample of 394 self-identified LGB nurses completed an online survey in March 2019. Using data from the ASSIST V3.1 measurement tool, the incidence of problematic and non-problematic tobacco, alcohol and illicit substance use was described as a percentage of respondents in each group. Hierarchical regression assessed t

AIM AND DESIGN: Indigenous knowledge systems offer enduring, relational and strengths-based frameworks for health and wellbeing. This theory and framework paper critically analyses how colonial legacies embedded in nursing curricula marginalise Indigenous knowledges and perpetuate inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We argue that current approaches, often fragmented, tokenistic and additive in nature, fail to address the structural and pedagogical roots of unsafe cultural practices and institutional racism in nursing education.
RESULTS: In response, we present the In

OBJECTIVE: In Canada, opportunistic screening programs have successfully reduced mortality from cervical cancer; however, minority or disadvantaged groups, as well as women in northern and rural areas, are inadequately recruited by this approach. Hence, we set out to examine the structural barriers that prevent First Nations women's participation in cervical cancer screening.
METHODS: Using a participatory action research approach and semistructured interview guides, we conducted in-depth interviews with 18 experienced health care professionals, 12 of whom were also community members. These i

Background: Adults with type 2 diabetes increasingly use patient portals, telemonitoring systems, mobile applications, text messaging programs, and other digital services to support self-management. In practice, however, these approaches often still depend on nursing support to help patients understand, use, and sustain digital care in everyday settings. This scoping review mapped how nurses are involved in supporting adults with type 2 diabetes to use digital tools, information, and services for self-management across care settings. Methods: This scoping review followed Joanna Briggs Institut

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To report the findings of a service review--specifically the strategy to provide early childhood services 'on site' at opioid treatment clinics to address access difficulties.
BACKGROUND: Child and family health nurses are skilled in the assessment and support of families during early childhood. However, women with a history of substance abuse are often cautious when engaging with universal and other health services, with the result that the infant may miss recommended developmental screening and early referral to improve health outcomes.
DESIGN: In 2006, an internal rev

People with learning disabilities represent a small and vulnerable group in society who commonly encounter barriers in accessing and using health care. This article focuses on how nurses and other healthcare professionals could support these individuals to make decisions about their care. In particular, it highlights the changes in legislation, policy and practice that have occurred recently to ensure the rights of people with learning disabilities to access health care are upheld.

A university-based program of perinatal care was extended to serve a spectrum of underserved populations through both urban and rural outreach. The program centered on the use of a multidisciplinary health care team comprised of a physician, nurse-midwife, health educator, social worker, nutritionist, pediatric nurse-practitioner, and patient case manager for health service delivery. It emphasized a decentralized service model with central referral and management of high-risk problems. The program has become a model for perinatal access and is reflected in current state legislation. The implem

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is traditionally prescribed by HIV specialist physicians. Given finite specialist resources, there is a need to scale up PrEP delivery by decentralizing services via other healthcare professionals. We aimed to assess the feasibility of delivering PrEP to men who have sex with men (MSM) through primary care physicians and sexual health clinic nurses. We piloted a multi-component, implementation and dissemination research program to increase provision of PrEP through primary care physicians and sexual health clinic nurses in Toronto, Canada. Community-based organi
