[Protection of health care personnel from occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens: problems in legislative and other documents adopted in different countries].

Contact with human blood is one of the vital issues concerning occupational exposure to biological factors. The fact that pathogens that create high health risk may be transmitted by blood must not be ignored. Considering the problem of biological exposure at workplace, HIV, HBV and HCV are recognized as the most essential viruses. Health care workers belong to the occupational group characterized by the most frequent contact with blood. Infections induced by blood borne pathogens are mostly observed among nurses, laboratory personnel and physicians. In the European Union countries, the USA an

Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Home Health Use Among People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Measuring Their Association With Neighborhood Racial Segregation.

IMPORTANCE: Black people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) report poor health and lower service use compared with their White counterparts. Structural racism, neighborhood segregation in particular, has been identified as a potential barrier to equitable service use, but empirical investigations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between race/ethnicity and neighborhood-level segregation on the use of outpatient occupational therapy and physical therapy and home health services among people with IDD. DESIGN: A secondary data analysis, using weighted two

Occupational health risks and provision gaps among live-in caregivers: findings from a qualitative interview study of Polish live-ins in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Migrant live-in caregivers play an important role in home-based long-term care, yet their working and living conditions remain largely underregulated. Despite increasing evidence of precarious employment and health risks among live-in caregivers internationally, little is known about their occupational health risks and access to occupational health care. METHODS: This qualitative interview study is part of the project Live-In Health and reports findings from 16 semi-structured interviews with Polish live-in caregivers (15 females and one male) working in German private households.…

Occupational Stressors and Dual Health Burden: Associations Between Body Mass Index and Common Mental Disorders Among Hospital and Manufacturing Employees in Indonesia.

This comparative cross-sectional study simultaneously investigated the dual health burden of body mass index (BMI) and common mental disorders (CMDs) driven by occupational stressors in two stepwise regression models. By classifying stress exposure into three clinically relevant tiers (low, moderate, and severe) in two distinctive populations-a hospital and a manufacturing company-we used the validated SDS-30 and SRQ-20 instruments. The robust multiple regression models uncovered a highly nuanced landscape of employee well-being that highlights the context-dependent nature of psychosocial haza

Self-Reported Occupational Tuberculosis Exposure Among Healthcare Workers During COVID-19-Related Health System Reprioritisation in South Africa: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 diverted health system resources from tuberculosis (TB) control, potentially increasing occupational TB exposure among healthcare workers. This study examined associations between COVID-19-related reprioritisation and self-reported occupational TB exposure. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study using self-reported data was conducted in public health facilities in 2022. A questionnaire assessed occupational TB exposure, service disruptions, and resource reallocation before and during COVID-19. Descriptive statistics and exploratory logistic regression were performe

Frequent Hand Hygiene-Induced Skin Symptoms and Alterations in Hand Microbiota: A Neglected Form of Chronic Occupational Exposure Among Health Care Workers.

BACKGROUND: Frequent hand hygiene is essential for infection control among health care workers (HCWs) but may cause adverse skin effects. PURPOSE: To assess the relationships between frequent hand hygiene practices, skin symptoms, and microbiota alterations in HCWs. METHODS: A comprehensive search of 7 databases was conducted to identify articles published between January 2014 and July 2024 in English and Chinese. RESULTS: A total of 24 studies were included in the review. Frequent hand hygiene was associated with reduced microbial flora in 2 studies and high incidences of skin dryness, itc

Cancer burden and health inequalities attributable to occupational arsenic exposure: A 32-year global, regional, and national observational study with projections to 2036.

Occupational arsenic exposure (OEA), mainly through inhalation in workplace settings, is an established carcinogenic hazard associated with lung, skin, and bladder cancers. However, long-term trends and the global cancer burden attributable to OEA remain insufficiently characterized. Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 were used to analyze the cancer burden attributable to OEA from 1990 to 2021. Indicators included summary exposure values (SEVs), deaths, years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) at global, regional, and national levels. Estima

The Mediating Role of Empathy in the Relationship Between Mindfulness and Psychological Well-Being Among Special Education Teachers: Implications for Occupational Mental Health.

Background/Objectives: Psychological well-being is an important indicator of occupational mental health among special education teachers, as it is closely associated with work engagement, professional performance, and attitudes toward students with disabilities. Despite its importance, limited research has examined factors associated with psychological well-being among special education teachers in Arab contexts. Therefore, this study examined the level of psychological well-being among special education teachers and investigated the relative contributions of mindfulness and empathy. In additi

Using online wellness assessment to screen for risk of lowered work ability, burnout, depression and anxiety in occupational health: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: An increasing prevalence of disability and sickness absences related to mental health highlights the need to find scalable measures to identify common occupational health challenges early on. This study (1) investigates how well current work ability measures capture psychosocial occupational health challenges, (2) examines how online wellness questionnaire data are linked to these challenges and (3) suggests a limited set of questions for screening employees. METHODS: A total 709 employees filled out a wellness survey, the Work Ability Index, the Bergen Burnout Indicator and scree…

Risk factors associated with occupational noise-induced hearing loss in the Hispanic community health study/study of Latinos: A cross-sectional epidemiologic investigation.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of occupational noise exposure and risk factors of occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in Hispanic/Latino adults included in the baseline wave of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos collected from 2008 to 2011. Sequential multiple linear regression modeled the relationship between occupational NIHL (defined as a 3-, 4-, 6-kHz pure-tone average [PTA]) and occupation type, self-reported noise exposure, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk score, and hearing protective device (HPD) use. Reevaluation of Historical Exposures to Ethylene Oxide Among U.S. Sterilization Workers in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Study Cohort.

The 2016 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment for ethylene oxide (EO) estimated a 10-6 increased inhalation cancer risk of 0.1 parts per trillion, based on National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) epidemiology studies of sterilization facility workers exposed to EO between 1938 and 1986. The worker exposure estimates were based on a NIOSH statistical regression (NSR) model "validated" with EO levels measured after 1978. Between 1938 and 1978, when EO data was unavailable, the NSR model predicts exposures lowest in 1
