Intimate partner violence in ophthalmology: a global call to action.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Despite increasing public awareness of IPV, little information is available regarding the prevalence, associated injury patterns, and impact of IPV as a mechanism of ocular and orbital trauma. The purpose of this review is to summarize the literature regarding the impact of IPV in ophthalmology and provide team members with guidance on appropriate practices for screening and referral. RECENT FINDINGS: Data from 48 population-based studies estimates that the lifetime prevalence of IPV range…

Pattern of Uveitis in a Tertiary Ophthalmology Center in Thailand.

PURPOSE: To study the etiology and pattern of uveitis in a tertiary ophthalmology center in Thailand. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on uveitis patients presenting to a uveitis clinic at Ramathibodi Hospital, Thailand, between February 2014 and January 2015. RESULTS: A total of 758 uveitis patients were enrolled into this study. The most common identified cause was herpetic uveitis (17.2%), followed by Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (13.5%), cytomegalovirus uveitis (12.7%), and HLA-B27/spondyloarthropathy-associated uveitis (12.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Herpetic uveitis was the common…

Blood derived stem cells: an ameliorative therapy in veterinary ophthalmology.

Stem cell technology has evoked considerable excitement among people interested in the welfare of animals, as it has suggested the potential availability of new tools for several pathologies, including eye disease, which in many cases is considered incurable. One such example is ulcerative keratitis, which is very frequent in horses. Because some of these corneal ulcers can be very severe, progress rapidly and, therefore, can be a possible cause of vision loss, it is important to diagnose them at an early stage and administer an appropriate treatment, which can be medical, surgical, or a combi

[Catalytic autoantibodies--a new molecular instrument in cardiology and ophthalmology].

AIM: To develop a conceptual model of using catalytic autoantibodies as diagnostic and monitoring tools in organ-specific autoimmune disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 99 patients (56 males and 43 females aged 21-52 years) with autoimmune myocarditis (AM) and 198 patients (77 males and 121 females aged 8-79 years) with autoimmune uveitis (A U) participated in the study. AM patients were examined for anticardiomyosin and anti-DNA autoantibodies (ACM, ADNAab), AU patients - for autoantibodies to S-antigen, IRBP, redopsin, phosphocine, autoDNA. RESULTS: AM patients had double level of

Confocal microscopy: a report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

OBJECTIVE: To review the available evidence for the use of confocal microscopy in diagnosing infectious keratitis and for other applications … cutive patients. CONCLUSION: Confocal microscopy is a new technology with clinical applications in ophthalmology. Although confocal microscopy has been used in other fields of medicine, the optical transparency of the cornea and other structures of the eye provides a unique opportunity to apply this technology. The targeted literature review of 24 articles fou …

Corneal endothelial photography. Three-year revision. American Academy of Ophthalmology.

When properly done, corneal endothelial photography has been shown to be a relatively safe, reliable, and effective means to ascertain corneal endothelial cell density (cells/ mm2) and to provide information about endothelial cell morphometry. Currently, this procedure is not essential prior to routine cataract surgery, but may be indicated in situations in which the cornea is suspected of having endothelial abnormality and in which the accuracy of the estimated cell count from slit-lamp biomicroscopy is thought to be less than satisfactory. These situations include but are not limited to (1)

[Psychopathology and neuro-ophthalmology in meningioma of the olfactory groove].

In 14 patients with a surgically nad histopathologically verified meningioma of the olfactory nerve groove (OGM) (12 women, 2 men), clinical findings and diagnosis were analysed, especially with respect to neuropathology and psychopathology. The apodictic theorem that an OGM leads to a Foster-Kennedy syndrome as well as to a psychopathological orbital brain syndrome cannot be maintained. The Foster-Kennedy syndrome does not occur in a characteristically high incidence, and psychopathologically an orbital brain syndrome can only be diagnosed in case of an anterior location of the OGM. The more

A new ultrasonic apparatus for ophthalmology using manuel compound scanning.

A new ultrasonic equipment for ophthalmological diagnosis has been developed. Manual compound scanning using water immersion made acurate representation of cross-section of the orbital structure possible. A large, focused transducer brought resolution and sensitivity. Gray scale display of the ultrasonogram increased information concerning intensity of echoes. Ultrasonograms of retinoblastoma, vitreous hemorrhage, melanocytoma, optic disc coloboma and unilateral exophthalmos are presented.

The use of contact B mode ultrasound in pediatric ophthalmology.

It has been shown that an ultrasound system such as the Bronson-Turner Contact B Mode can be added, fruitfully, to the armamentarium of the individual pediatric ophthalmologist. It can be used quickly and precisely with an ophthalmological training and without patient discomfort or anesthesia no matter what the age. Valuable anterior segment information can be readily gained without a waterbath. Examples are shown of children with opaque media who were found to have congenital cataracts and congenital aphakia, microphthalmos, PHPV, retinal anomalies and ectatic coloboma.
