Cup-disc ratios in the fellow eyes of 26 patients with unilateral, nonarteritic, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy were compared with the ratios in fellow eyes of 29 patients with unilateral idiopathic or demyelinative optic neuritis. The ratios in both groups were also compared with the ratios of a large group of normal subjects evaluated in a population survey. Observers measured the cup-disc ratio by viewing color stereophotographs. The cup-disc ratios of the fellow eyes of patients with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy were significantly smaller on average than were those of the fellow

Optical and magnetic metamaterials possess interesting properties that cannot be achieved with conventional materials. However, there is currently no synthetic method offering both scalability and nanometer spatial precision. Biotemplating is a promising technique that has the potential to organize nanoscale components with high precision while being scalable and low-cost. Here, we demonstrate a versatile template using hexahistidine-tagged tobacco mosaic virus coat protein. The protein self-assembles into disks, which further assemble into extended nanostructures under mild conditions. Large

PURPOSE: Accurate segmentation of glaucoma-related anatomical structures from retinal fundus images is crucial for reliable clinical assessment and early disease diagnosis. However, variations in illumination, low contrast, and complex structural patterns make precise boundary delineation of the optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) challenging. This study aims to improve the accuracy of OD and OC segmentation for glaucoma assessment.
METHODS: An Enhanced SwinUNet model is proposed, integrating hierarchical transformer-based feature extraction with a Dual-Stage Context-Aware Feature Refinement (

The prevalence of high myopia and primary open-angle glaucoma is rapidly increasing, complicating differential diagnosis because of overlapping morphological changes in the optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa. Both pathologies are accompanied by changes in the optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa, which makes interpretation of optical coherence tomography findings challenging. Analysis of literature sources shows that the most significant criteria include lamina cribrosa parameters (thickness, curvature, deformation index), features of peripapillary atrophy, the pattern of retinal nerve fiber

Intraretinal or subretinal fluid in the peripapillary area can be clinically visualized in conditions such as peripapillary choroidal neovascularization, optic disc pit maculopathy, and optic nerve head tumors and granulomas. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) helps to visualize peripapillary fluid in many other chorioretinal conditions such as peripapillary pachychoroid syndrome, posterior uveitis, central retinal vein occlusion, malignant hypertension, hypotonic maculopathy as well as neuro-ophthalmological conditions such as glaucoma, microcystic macular edema and disc edema due papilledema

PURPOSE: To compare the performance of 2 relatively recent geometric deep learning techniques in diagnosing glaucoma from a single optical coherence tomographic (OCT) scan of the optic nerve head (ONH); and to identify the 3-dimensional (3D) structural features of the ONH that are critical for the diagnosis of glaucoma.
DESIGN: Comparison and evaluation of deep learning diagnostic algorithms.
METHODS: In this study, we included a total of 2247 nonglaucoma and 2259 glaucoma scans from 1725 participants. All participants had their ONHs imaged in 3D with Spectralis OCT. All OCT scans were autom

BACKGROUND: Vascular mechanisms are implicated in many ocular diseases. Therefore, different vascular imaging modalities are used in management of such conditions. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has high spatial resolution and segmentable 3D volumetric sampling enabling isolation of retinal and peripapillary vascular beds. However, OCTA only indirectly derives quantitative flow data i.e. velocimetry through methods and algorithms liable to limitations like signal saturation. This study introduces and validates novel mathematical OCTA flow indices that may compensate for some O

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows the measurement of the peripapillary optic nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. The effect of ocular axial length (AL) on RNFL thickness measurement may be relevant in the interpretation of OCT results in diagnosing optic nerve diseases.
PURPOSE: To assess the influence of ocular AL on RNFL thickness and on optic disc topographic parameters (optic disc area, rim area and cup volume) measured by OCT, in healthy individuals.
METHODS: A sample of 109 healthy eyes classified into 3 groups according to AL (A: AL<22mm; B: AL 22-24.5mm; C: AL>24.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterised by retinal ganglion cell degeneration and visual field loss. Glaucoma is considered to be the leading cause of blindness in the industrialised countries. Oxidative damage is an important pathogenic factor in glaucoma, which triggers trabecular meshwork (TM) degeneration, which then leads to intraocular hypertension. Neurodegenerative insults during glaucomatous neurodegeneration initiate an immune response to restore tissue homeostasis. However, the oxidative stress (OS) that develops during the pathogenic processes of glaucoma, along wi

BACKGROUND: The identification of glaucomatous optic neuropathy in the setting of optic disc drusen (ODD) is a challenge, and the decision of whether to offer treatment in the form of intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction is controversial. Here, we present a series of patients with coexisting ocular hypertension and ODD to evaluate clinical features, treatment options, and progression of optic neuropathy. In addition, a review of the literature on ODD with elevated IOP is provided.
METHODS: Six patients with ODD and a history of ocular hypertension are presented. Components of the examination

PRCIS: Glaucoma was associated with axial bowing and rotation of Bruchs membrane opening (BMO) and anterior laminar insertion (ALI), skewed neural canal, and deeper anterior lamina cribrosa surface (ALCS). Longer axial length was associated with wider, longer, and more skewed neural canal and flatter ALCS.
PURPOSE: Investigate the effects of myopia and glaucoma in the prelaminar neural canal and anterior lamina cribrosa using 1060-nm swept-source optical coherence tomography.
PATIENTS: 19 control (38 eyes) and 38 glaucomatous subjects (63 eyes).

Doubling of the optic disc is rare in clinic, which appears as true doubling or pseudo-doubling. Bilateral doubling of the optic discs is even more less seen in clinic. Here, we report the case of a 35-year-old woman who presented to the clinic for a physical examination. The patient's best-corrected visual acuity was 0.6 OD with +2.25 DS/3.50 DC×175°, and 0.9 OS with -3.00 DS/0.50 DC×145°. The intraocular pressure of each eye was normal. Fundoscopy examination revealed an enlarged suspected optic disc in both eyes. Visual field examination revealed an additional blind spot in each eye. Optica
