Influence of heritability on occlusal traits: a systematic review of studies in twins.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this systematic review was to identify, evaluate, and provide a current literature about the influence of heritability on the determination of occlusal traits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, LILACS, and Google Scholar were searched without restrictions up to March 2020. Studies with twin method were considered and the risk of bias assessment was performed using quality of genetic association studies checklist (Q-Genie). The coefficient of heritability (h2), model-fitting approaches, and coefficient correlation were used to estimate the genetic/e

Strontium ion attenuates lipopolysaccharide-stimulated proinflammatory cytokine expression and lipopolysaccharide-inhibited early osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the destruction of the periodontium. The strontium ion (Sr2+ ) can prevent the bone loss associated with periodontitis and promote the regeneration of the bone. The mechanisms by which the Sr2+ works remain poorly understood. We aim to investigate the effects of the Sr2+ ion on cell proliferation, inflammatory regulation and osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) in pathological conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: hPDLCs were obtained from premolars that came from the orth

Association Between Odontoma and Impacted Teeth.

Odontoma is considered to be the most common odontogenic tumor of the oral cavity. Most odontomas are asymptomatic and are discovered during routine radiographic investigations and can cause disturbances in the eruption of the teeth, most commonly delayed eruption or deflection. By a retrospective study design, demographic and clinical data regarding patients who presented odontomas from year 1995 to 2015 were obtained in order and the influence of active therapy on the dentition and on the treatment of impacted teeth was analyzed. Forty-five patients (mean age 14.2 years) with 29 complex and

Can Dermatoglyphics Be Used as a Marker for Predicting Future Malocclusions?

INTRODUCTION: Dermal ridges and craniofacial structures form from the same embryonic tissues during the same embryonic period. Thus, this might indicate a possible association between dermatoglyphics and facial skeletal disorders, such as malocclusions. Early diagnosis of skeletal malocclusions sometimes can prevent future surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to compare the dermatoglyphic characteristics of different malocclusions. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 323 patients who were referred to Orthodontic Department of Mashhad Dental School were recruited. The participant

In vivo biofilm formation on stainless steel bonded retainers during different oral health-care regimens.

Retention wires permanently bonded to the anterior teeth are used after orthodontic treatment to prevent the teeth from relapsing to pre-treatment positions. A disadvantage of bonded retainers is biofilm accumulation on the wires, which produces a higher incidence of gingival recession, increased pocket depth and bleeding on probing. This study compares in vivo biofilm formation on single-strand and multi-strand retention wires with different oral health-care regimens. Two-centimetre wires were placed in brackets that were bonded to the buccal side of the first molars and second premolars in t

A novel approach for building up infraoccluded ankylosed primary molars in cases of missing premolars: A case report.

BACKGROUND: In cases of infraoccluded primary molars associated with agenesis of premolars, any treatment plan occasionally includes retention of the primary teeth for space preservation and future implant placement if needed. In these cases, building up the crowns to the occlusal line is necessary to prevent various clinical problems. The present case report describes in detail a novel but simple clinical approach for retention and building up of the crown of infraoccluded primary molars. CASE REPORT/TECHNIQUE PRESENTATION: The technique is presented in a 14-year-old girl with nine missing p

Effect of interleukin-4 on orthodontic tooth movement and associated root resorption.

OBJECTIVES: Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a recognized immunomodulatory cytokine that regulates bone homeostasis. However, the influence of IL-4 on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and subsequent root resorption is still unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of IL-4 on tooth movement and its associated root resorption in a mouse model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The maxillary first molars of four male mice for each experimental group were subjected to mesial force by a nickel titanium coil spring for 12 days. Control mice were not given appliances and injections. V

Comparative Evaluation of Frictional Resistance Between Different Types of Ceramic Brackets and Stainless Steel Brackets With Teflon-Coated Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel Archwires: An In-Vitro Study.

Background Orthodontic tooth movement relies on sliding mechanics usually achieved by sliding the archwire through brackets. Sliding causes friction which is a force resisting the relative motion of two contacting objects. Frictional resistance is undesirable in orthodontic tooth movement because the archwire might bind with the bracket and prevent tooth movement. In addition, friction causes bending of the archwire leading to unwanted tooth movement or space loss through anchorage interference, prolonging the treatment time and root resorption. This study was performed to compare the friction

Incidence of enamel defects on permanent canine teeth following extraction of linguoverted mandibular deciduous canine teeth in dogs.

Interceptive orthodontics may be indicated in puppies exhibiting dental malocclusion with linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth to alleviate pain and prevent teeth interlock, which may affect growth and development of the mandibles. Historically extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth has been recommended as soon as a malocclusion is identified, often as early as 6-8 weeks of age and no later than 12 weeks of age. This early surgical intervention of deciduous teeth extractions risks potential damage to the developing permanent canine teeth resulting in enamel defects often ref

Oral health status and care among hospitalised children: a prospective cohort study comparing admission and discharge.

BACKGROUND: Children hospitalised for acute or chronic illnesses often experience a decline in oral health, an aspect frequently neglected in inpatient care. Factors such as medication use, dietary alterations, and interruption of regular hygiene routines can adversely affect oral conditions, emphasising the need for structured preventive measures. This study aimed to investigate the impact of hospitalisation on paediatric oral health by comparing oral hygiene behaviours and clinical parameters at admission and discharge, and by assessing the degree of attention given to oral care during the h
