Transient Common Peroneal and Tibial Nerve Palsy Following Knee Arthroscopy for the Treatment of Discoid Lateral Meniscus.

The number of knee arthroscopies has increased rapidly since the 1980s and are among the most common orthopedic procedures today. It is generally considered a minimally invasive surgery with relatively low morbidity, but it is not without risk of complications. We report the case of a 14-year-old boy who developed a lesion of common peroneal nerve and tibial nerve after knee arthroscopy for a torn discoid lateral meniscus, which was confirmed by electromyogram study.

Complications of shoulder arthroscopy.

Shoulder arthroscopy can be a safe and effective tool to perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures about the shoulder. Careful attention to positioning, fluid management, use of traction, and appreciation of shoulder anatomy to select portal placement will help decrease the common complications associated with shoulder arthroscopy. The awareness of uncommon complications, such as deep venous thrombosis, pneumothorax, and iatrogenic rotator cuff tears will help the orthopedic surgeon to promptly diagnose and treat these problems.

Optimizing Safety and Efficacy of Intravenous Vancomycin Therapy in Orthopedic Inpatients Through a Standardized Dosing Protocol: A Pre-Post Cohort Study.

Background: Intravenous vancomycin remains a key agent in the treatment of complex orthopedic infections, particularly those involving methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, its use is associated with significant risks, most notably nephrotoxicity. Despite guideline recommendations, standardized dosing and monitoring protocols are often absent in orthopedic settings, leading to inconsistent therapeutic drug exposure and preventable adverse events. This study evaluated the clinical impact of implementing a structured standard operating procedure (SOP) for intravenous vanco

[Hallux valgus : Etiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic principles].

Hallux valgus-the most common forefoot deformity-can cause both pain and decreased mobility. The development and progress of the hallux valgus is a multifactorial process. Different intrinsic and extrinsic causes are responsible. Various conservative and operative treatment options exist and have to been chosen regarding the stage of the disease. Conservative orthopedic measures may prevent a deterioration of hallux valgus only at an early stage of the disease. Concerning operative techniques, more than 150 different surgical procedures are described in the literature, which can be reduced to

Bilateral Stifle Arthrodesis as a Salvage Procedure for End-Stage Bilateral Grade IV Lateral Patellar Luxation in a Dog: A Case Report.

Grade IV lateral patellar luxation is an advanced orthopedic condition that may be associated with severe skeletal deformities, chronic soft-tissue contracture, and irreversible loss of normal stifle function. Although reconstructive procedures are considered the treatment of choice in most dogs, some end-stage cases may not be amenable to conventional correction. This report describes the clinical presentation, surgical management, and long-term outcome of a young dog with severe bilateral grade IV lateral patellar luxation treated with single-stage bilateral stifle arthrodesis. A 1-year-old,

The who, what and when of surgery for the degenerative lumbar spine: a population-based study of surgeon factors, surgical procedures, recent trends and reoperation rates.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative disease of the lumbar spine (DLS) is a common condition for which surgery can be beneficial in selected patients. With recent surgical trends toward more focused subspecialty training, it is unclear how characteristics of the surgical consultant may impact on treatment and reoperations. Our objective was to understand the relations between surgeon factors (who), surgical procedures (what) and recent trends (when) and their influence on reoperations for DLS surgery. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal population-based study using administrative databases including all

[Diagnostic ultrasound in orthopedics].

Diagnostic ultrasound of the locomotor system is indispensable in modern orthopedic diagnostic practice. Due to its harmlessness, spatial display and identification of all structures, diagnostic ultrasound has significantly improved diagnostic procedures and has become a method of choice in a number of pathologic processes. Ultrasound enables visualization of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, tendons, hematomas, abscesses, cysts, bursae of joints, to a certain extent even bones, and the processes taking place in them and how they are related to the surrounding structures. Ultrasound also

Paradoxical cerebral embolism after total knee arthroplasty.

Deep vein thrombosis is a frequent complication following total joint arthroplasty and other major orthopedic procedures. Pulmonary embolism occurs with or without a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis, although infrequently (1.5%-10%). In patients with congenital cardiac defects, such as a patent foramen ovale, paradoxical cerebral embolism may also occur. This article describes a case of a 52-year-old woman who sustained a paradoxical cerebral embolism following total knee arthroplasty. In the workup of a patient with a known murmur and stroke symptoms, paradoxical cerebral embolism should be …

Comparison of single-stage and delayed gastrocnemius flap procedures for soft-tissue defects of the knee and proximal tibia.

PURPOSE: Gastrocnemius flaps provide reliable reconstructive solutions to soft-tissue loss of the knee and proximal tibia following orthopedic procedures. While this technique has been used and studied, little is known about its prophylactic application. Single-stage and delayed approaches were compared with respect to the timing of débridement, complications, and relationship between microorganisms and complications. METHODS: Gastrocnemius flaps for soft-tissue defects of the knee joint were retrospectively reviewed. Success of the flap procedure was defined as a healed soft-tissue envelope,…

Non artheritic bilateral anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) as devastating complication following Total Hip Arthroplasty: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative vision loss (PVL) is an extremely rare complication following major surgical procedures. Patients with systemic hypertension, diabetes, coronary diseases and smokers are generally predisposed to this complication. More frequently, it is caused by ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), central retinal artery occlusion or retinal vein occlusion. Rare cases of unilateral PVL following total joint arthroplasty surgery have been recently described in literature. CASE REPORT: This case report describes the first reported bilateral non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropat

Pseudoaneurysm of the axillary artery following a modified Bristow operation: report of a case and review.

The Bristow operation with its modifications has become a popular therapeutic modality for recurrent subluxation of the humerus. A patient was recently treated for a false aneurysm of the axillary artery six months after such a procedure. The artery had been lacerated by the dislodged fixation screw. The clinical presentation, intraoperative management and postoperative course were described, and a suggestion for removing the orthopedic screw eight weeks after a Bristow procedure was offered.

Temperature Increase Limitation During Automatic Bone Drilling in Orthopedic Surgery.

In orthopedic surgery, the most performed manipulation is bone drilling. One significant problem related to this manipulation is the overheating which causes thermal osteonecrosis. By reports the drill speed is the main factor responsible for heat generation and contributes up to 78% to temperature rise during bone drilling. Therefore, the aim of this work is to develop and implement drilling speed control approach to control the temperature rise in drilling area and prevent overheating of bone tissue. During drilling, a real-time drill bit tip temperature estimation is calculated based on dat
