Radioisotopes were used to study the water spaces of the bone and bone marrow in 47 dogs with a created model of acute osteomyelitis. Dysosteosclerosis is a rare bone dysplasia that has radiographic, histopathologic, and clinical similarities to osteopetrosis. This article reviews the dental findings reported in patients with dysosteosclerosis and presents the first reported case of osteomyelitis of the mandible in a patient with this disease. This is also the first report that demonstrates ankylosis of impacted teeth in dysosteosclerosis.

A dwarf suffering from pycnodysostosis was treated for 2 episodes of chronic osteomyelitis of the mandible occurring at an interval of 6 years. Pycnodysostostis, a variant of osteopetrosis, occurs only in dwarfs and is characterised by increased density of bone which may lead to increased susceptibility to fracture and inflammatory disease.

Chronic heel ulcerations in the insensate or bedridden patient have always been a difficult and frustrating condition to cure. When complicated by osteomyelitis, the patient must often resort to below-the-knee amputation. Presented here is a case report of the use of partial calcanectomy and primary closure for the treatment of osteomyelitis of the os calcis with ulceration. A discussion of indications, technique, and results is given.

We reviewed 116 cases of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) (without septic joints) from 1979 to 1985 to establish current patterns of clinical presentation, modes of treatment, and success of therapy. We found that patients present early in the course of their disease, and many have no findings other than local tenderness and an elevated sedimentation rate. Sixty-four of the patients were treated nonoperatively. A patient receiving home parenteral nutrition developed osteomyelitis of the clavicle associated with a Hickman catheter which had been functioning for 14 months. The infection was treated with bone curettage, parenteral antibiotics, and catheter removal. Although this has been a reported complication of subclavian vein catheters, this is the first reported case associated with a Hickman catheter.

The clinical and bacteriological efficacy and safety of ciprofloxacin given as oral doses of 500 to 1,500 mg (normally 750 mg) twice daily for treatment of Gram-negative bacillary osteomyelitis are reviewed. In 182 patients of whom a majority had Pseudomonas aeruginosa or mixtures of Ps. aeruginosa and other bacteria as the causative agents, clinical cure or improvement was achieved in 75%. External skeletal fixation played a central role in the reconstruction of 30 limbs involved in posttraumatic osteomyelitis. The tibia was involved in 15, the femur in six, the ankle in five, and the foot and radius in two each. Of the thirty limbs, 27 were ununited. We report two cases of osteomyelitis secondary to staphylococcal septicaemia, presenting with large sterile effusions in adjacent joints. In both cases the clinical features were suggestive of septic arthritis. Multiple joints were involved in each patient. Initial radiographs showed no abnormalities.
