Short case reports are presented of two patients seen in the U.K. with 'parasitic' obstructive jaundice. In one case the parasite involved was Clonorchis, and in the other it was Echinococcus. Both these parasites are uncommon in this country.

Parasitic disease is still important subject in the field of infectious diseases in Korea considering it's number and morbidity. Recently there was conspicuous reduction of parasitic disease in terms of soil-transmitted nematodiasis, but parasitism affecting organs other than intestinal tract is still a considerable problem. This survey covers the parasitic diseases cross-sectioned at a pathology laboratory of a referral hospital, trying to elucidate the significance of its relative frequency and also to describe some histopathological changes made by different parasites. Entire pathological m…

Antigenic variation in the protozoan parasites responsible for malaria and African sleeping sickness is examined. Some of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the generation of new variant antigens are reviewed and the possible problems posed by this process in the development of vaccines against these parasites are discussed.

A viewpoint of host-parasite relationships in paracoccidioidomycosis is presented. The characteristics of the fungus which are important to the host-parasite interaction are discussed. Aspects of inhibition of mycelium-to-yeast transformation by estrogens acting at receptors on the fungal wall and in the cytoplasm, and the role of polysaccharide components of the cell wall in virulence are reviewed. The natural mechanisms of host defense are also examined, including phagocytosis, complement system, natural-killer cells and genetic control of resistance and susceptibility. Finally, a discussion

In patients with compromised host defenses, diseases caused by protozoans and nematodes appeared, a few years ago, to be declining in importance. However, the outbreak of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among homosexual men, parenteral drug abusers, and other groups has made it necessary for physicians to familiarize themselves again with the manifestations of these diseases in abnormal hosts. The groups of patients at greatest risk, the usual clinical syndromes in abnormal hosts, and current approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infections due to Pneumocystis car

We studied the frequency of parasitic infection and associated clinical symptoms in children who attended general pediatric and dental clinics at UCLA. Parasites were detected in stool specimens of 40 (38%) of the 1-4 children completing the study. Protozoan parasites were recovered in 39 (38%); one child had whipworm eggs. Parasites included Dientamoeba fragilis in 22 (21%) children and Giardia lamblia in 18 (17%) children; commensals were observed in 15 (14%) children. Parasitic infection was more frequent in younger children, those with a history of immigration or foreign travel and those a…

In many parts of world, transmission of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum can no longer be controlled by insecticides. Furthermore, this species has developed an amazing capacity for resistance to polyvalent drugs. The advent of new drugs and the possibility of developing a vaccine offer some hope for control of falciparum malaria. The fact that the spread of many parasitic diseases is promoted by contaminated water supplies resulting from inadequate waste disposal raises important questions about the relevance of current research. The control of some endemic infections, like Chagas' diseas

Levamisole is a drug of choice for treatment of ascariasis. With recommended dosages, it is virtually free of side effects. Single doses of 50 to 150mg will eliminate all parasites in 90 to 100% of ascariasis patients irrespective of worm burden. Activity against hookworms has been demonstrated for levamisole but the most effective treatment regimen has not been determined. Further drug trials are needed for better assessment of efficacy. Levamisole has little or no curative action on infections with whipworms and pinworms. It may have some activity against strongyloides but confirmatory studi…

A number of protozoan, trematode, and nematode infections have been imported into Tasmania over an 18-month period. Some of the cases are briefly discussed as they provide features of clinical interest. The increasing problem of imported infections in Australia is emphasized.

A survey of 1,548 stools samples carried out in Gabon showed in the adult population a parasitism ratio of about 100%. Among the protozoa, D. fragilis was found in 0.3% of the cases. In contradiction with the usual observations in tropical Africa, A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura infestation is very high in the villages. The demonstration of S. intercalatum in almost every place of the survey and an important focus at Okondja proves the extension of this bilharziosis.
