The Valsalva maneuver is an autonomic test that evokes short sharp cardiovascular fluctuations mediated by the autonomic nervous system. Numerous spectral analysis methods have been proposed to analyze biological signals. When applied to heart rate (HR) variability, two major bands related to autonomic influence have been defined: LF (mainly sympathetic) and HF (parasympathetic). However, conventional spectral approaches are based on the assumption of stationarity, and most require at least five minutes of recording. These two requirements cannot be fulfilled when analysis of dynamic processes

The role of the autonomic nervous system in hypertension due to mineralocorticoid excess remains unclear. To address this issue, we performed power spectral analysis of blood pressure (BP) and RR interval oscillations in 20 patients with primary aldosteronism (PA), 54 patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 45 normotensive (NT) subjects. Blood pressure and the degree of organ damage were similar between PA and EH groups. Age did not differ between the three groups. The Mayer wave power spectrum (MWP) of BP (approx. 0.1 Hz), an index of sympathetic vasomotor tone, was smaller in patients

INTRODUCTION: Blue light (peak wavelength 442 nm) has been shown to modulate the immune response in preclinical models of intra-abdominal sepsis and pneumonia. In vivo pathways involve optic nerve stimulation with transmission to the central nervous system, activation of parasympathetic pathways terminating at the spleen, and downstream immune effects including decreased inflammatory tissue damage and improved pathogen clearance. Related effects on pain mediators including proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin 6, TNF- α) and autonomic tone (increased parasympathetic outflow) suggest possible

OBJECTIVES: The mitochondrial uncoupling proteins UCP2 and UCP3 are implicated in energy metabolism and regulation of reactive oxygen species, which are closely involved in autonomic nervous system function. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects cardiac autonomic regulation and has been used to evaluate dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system in hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. We examined the association between polymorphisms in the UCP2 and UCP3 genes and HRV in healthy young Japanese men.
METHODS: The 45 bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in exon8 of UCP2 and the -55C/T polymo

INTRODUCTION: Brugada Syndrome (BrS) typically manifests with a dynamic type 1 Brugada pattern (Br1ECGp) that depends on the dominance of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system. This pattern is more prominent during activities that stimulate the vagus nerve, such as sleeping and after meals. By conducting the tilt table test and adding high precordial leads to the standard protocol, it is possible to provoke sympathetic or parasympathetic responses, providing valuable information.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an observational, cross-sectional and hypothesis-generating pilot stud…

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This article reviews the anatomic, functional, and neurochemical organization of the sympathetic and parasympathetic outputs; the effects on target organs; the central mechanisms controlling autonomic function; and the pathophysiologic basis for core symptoms of autonomic failure.
RECENT FINDINGS: Functional neuroimaging studies have elucidated the areas involved in central control of autonomic function in humans. Optogenetic and other novel approaches in animal experiments have provided new insights into the role of these areas in autonomic control across behavioral st

Having broad knowledge of anatomy is essential for practicing dentistry. Certain anatomical structures call for detailed studies due to their anatomical and functional importance. Nevertheless, some structures are difficult to visualize and identify due to their small volume and complicated access. Such is the case of the parasympathetic ganglia located in the cranial part of the autonomic nervous system, which include: the ciliary ganglion (located deeply in the orbit, laterally to the optic nerve), the pterygopalatine ganglion (located in the pterygopalatine fossa), the submandibular ganglio

The relationship between depressive symptoms and coronary artery disease (CAD) is mediated in part by immune system parameters. This review describes research on the psychoneuroimmunological pathways accounting for the association between depression and CAD, and addresses conceptual and methodological issues. Relationships between central nervous system correlates of depression and immune system parameters are bidirectional and are mediated via neurohormonal and parasympathetic pathways. Evidence suggests that these associations can be affected by a) the clinical characteristics of depression

A theory is proposed to explain the benefits of yoga practices in diverse, frequently comorbid medical conditions based on the concept that yoga practices reduce allostatic load in stress response systems such that optimal homeostasis is restored. It is hypothesized that stress induces (1) imbalance of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) with decreased parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, (2) underactivity of the gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA) system, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter system, and (3) increased allostatic load. It i…

Recent information about the localization of sympathetic nerves and catecholamine-containing cells suggests sites of action not usually described in the neuroscience textbooks. In this study, we focused on the autonomic controls that affect ganglia, heart, gut, and chemoreceptors. As a result of some speculation derived mainly from histochemical observations and partially from physiologic data, we concluded that at the organ level the interplay between a nerve terminal-receptor serves as a local control. Additional controls may function at the ganglion level where catecholamine-containing chro

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic variants of GNB5 encoding the β5 subunit of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein cause IDDCA syndrome, an autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental disorder associated with cognitive disability and cardiac arrhythmia, particularly severe bradycardia.
METHODS: We used echocardiography and telemetric ECG recordings to investigate consequences of Gnb5 loss in mouse.
RESULTS: We delineated a key role of Gnb5 in heart sinus conduction and showed that Gnb5-inhibitory signalling is essential for parasympathetic control of heart rate (HR) and maintenance of the sympathovagal ba

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature has reported that a history of pre-eclampsia (PE) increases a woman's long-term risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Autonomic nervous system dysfunction was found to be significant in this specific population, but most studies observed the role of sympathetic over-activation. The aim of this study was to assess whether parasympathetic impairment was involved in women 1 year after PE, and heart rate recovery (HRR) was used to represent parasympathetic tone.
STUDY DESIGN: 47 women with previous PE (PE group) and 58 women with a healthy pregnancy (cont

Recently, there have been robust changes in our knowledge of the neurophysiology of cough and novel clinical etiologies. Specifically, cough hypersensitivity in adults and protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) in children have been increasingly investigated, and differences between chronic cough in children and adults have been widely reported. In young children, postinfectious cough, bronchiectasis, airway malacia, PBB, and asthma appear to be the main causes of cough; however, by adolescence, the causes of cough are more likely to become those common in adults, namely, gastroesophageal reflu

Intracellular glucose signalling pathways control the secretion of glucagon and insulin by pancreatic islet α- and β-cells, respectively. However, glucose also indirectly controls the secretion of these hormones through regulation of the autonomic nervous system that richly innervates this endocrine organ. Both parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems also impact endocrine pancreas postnatal development and plasticity in adult animals. Defects in these autonomic regulations impair β-cell mass expansion during the weaning period and β-cell mass adaptation in adult life. Both branches of

After oral exposure of cattle with classical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (C-BSE), the infectious agent ascends from the gut to the central nervous system (CNS) primarily via the autonomic nervous system. However, the timeline of this progression has thus far remained widely undetermined. Previous studies were focused on later time points after oral exposure of animals that were already 4 to 6 months old when challenged. In contrast, in this present study, we have orally inoculated 4 to 6 weeks old unweaned calves with high doses of BSE to identify any possible BSE infectivity and/or PrPBS

BACKGROUND: Swimming is a genotype-specific trigger in long QT syndrome type 1 (LQT1).
OBJECTIVE: To examine the autonomic response to water activities in children and adolescents with LQT1.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, LQT1 patients were age and sex matched to one healthy control subject. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded during face immersion (FI), swimming, diving, and whole-body submersion (WBS). Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) was measured. The high frequency (HF) component of HRV was interpreted to reflect parasympathetic activity, while the low freque

The autonomic regulation in blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia has received particular attention due to the unique link between fear and fainting in this anxiety disorder. However, systematic exploration of sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiac activity during exposure to phobia-relevant emotional stimuli has remained rare and inconclusive, including with regard to disgust, a frequent response to BII stimuli. Existing studies using respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) as a noninvasive index of parasympathetic cardiac activity also have not accounted sufficiently for effects of respiration. We
