Preoperative fine needle aspiration cytologic diagnosis of spindle cell myoepithelioma of the parotid gland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: There are only rare case reports of preoperative fine needle aspiration cytologic (FNAC) diagnosis of myoepithelioma of the salivary gland. Myoepitheliomas with pure spindle cell morphology may simulate a variety of benign or malignant spindle cell soft tissue tumors. CASE: A 54-year-old woman presented with a history of progressively increasing swelling in the right parotid region. The clinical diagnosis was parotid malignancy. Routine FNAC yielded highly particulate material. The smears were cellular, with tissue fragments, clusters of spindle cells and numerous small globules a…

Synchronous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of tongue and pleomorphic adenoma of submandibular gland.

Presentation with synchronous salivary gland tumors is rare, with the most typical combination being Warthin's tumor and pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. Involvement of minor salivary glands in such occurrences is extremely uncommon. We report a case of simultaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue and pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland in a 40-year-old woman. The submandibular mass was initially considered to represent regional lymph node tumor metastasis but later was shown to be an intraglandular primary neoplasm.

Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma Presenting as a Giant Parapharyngeal Mass.

Introduction: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland tumor, primarily found in the parotid gland. Recurrences often extend into the parapharyngeal space (PPS), complicating management. This report presents a case of a recurrent giant PA in the PPS following a limited excision. Case Description: A 45-year-old male presented with a gradually enlarging neck mass, dysphagia, and mild dyspnea, having previously undergone limited excision of a PA. Clinical examination revealed a firm mass in the right parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a large mass in …

Plastic surgery and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy in the management of advanced external auditory canal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the external auditory canal is a rare malignancy that originates in the external auditory canal and has a tendency to spread to adjacent structures such as the periorbital soft tissues, parotid gland, temporomandibular joint and mastoid. It is difficult to determine the primary tumour from the external ear canal or from adjacent structures. In addition, the lack of a unified classification system, along with the rarity of the disease, is a major obstacle in providing specific treatment guidelines for this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a clini

Integration of metabolomics and transcriptomics reveals convergent pathways driving radiation-induced salivary gland dysfunction.

Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer causes damage to the surrounding salivary glands, resulting in salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia. Current treatments do not provide lasting restoration of salivary gland function following radiation; therefore, a new mechanistic understanding of the radiation-induced damage response is necessary for identifying therapeutic targets. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the metabolic phenotype of radiation-induced damage in parotid salivary glands by integrating transcriptomic and metabolomic data. Integrated data were then analy

Multiple myopericytoma of the face and parotid gland.

Myopericytoma is a benign tumor that is composed of myoid-appearing oval to spindle-shaped cells with a concentric perivascular pattern of growth. The tumor is morphologically heterogeneous and can exhibit a broad histologic spectrum. We describe a case of multiple myopericytoma occurring in the head and neck skin region with involvement of the parotid gland where it is known to occur very rarely. A 40-year-old woman noticed multiple enlarging, painless, round-shaped masses on her left cheek. The patient had experienced a similar lesion of the same area 8 years earlier which was completely exc

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma with regional lymph node metastasis.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is a particularly rare variant of sweat gland carcinoma with characteristics of indolent and progressive course and high incidence of perineural invasion and local recurrence. However, regional lymph node metastasis in PCACC is exceedingly rare and its prognostic implication is unknown. Only two previous cases of recurrent scalp PCACC were reported to be associated with cervical lymph node metastases at 42 months and 20 years, respectively, after the initial treatment. We present a case of PCACC occurring in the left parotid region with region…

Localization of salivary proteins in granules of human parotid and submandibular acinar cells.

Electron microscopic immunocytochemistry was used to investigate the distribution of four secretory proteins within the granules of human parotid and submandibular gland acinar cells. The results demonstrate that the distribution of the individual proteins differs significantly. Amylase is concentrated within the electron-dense regions of the granules, whereas agglutinin is present mainly in the regions of lower density. In contrast, the proline-rich proteins and histatins are distributed throughout the content of the granules and do not appear to be concentrated in either the high- or low-den

Yolk Sac Tumor of the Parotid Gland in a Child and its Differentials.

Yolk sac tumors (YST) (or endodermal sinus tumors) are rare neoplasms of germ cell origin that have been reported in gonadal sites (testis and ovary). Extragonadal YST are uncommon and are extremely rare in the extracranial head-and-neck regions. Here, we present a rare case of a 1-year-old male with isolated YST of the right parotid gland initially diagnosed as malignant epithelial neoplasm with possibilities of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma.

Strategy to select nasopharyngeal cancer patients for adaptive radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients experience significant anatomical changes during radiation treatment (RT). Adaptive radiotherapy (ART) can be initiated in response to specific events or at scheduled intervals during treatment, prompting questions about patient selection, timing, and reliable triggers for re-CT and replanning. This study aimed to develop a method for selecting NPC patients for ART before treatment and identify the optimal timing for its implementation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated NPC patients treated at University Hospitals Leuven betwe

Metastatic Basosquamous Carcinoma: Report of Two Cases and Clinicopathological Considerations.

Basosquamous carcinoma is a rare cutaneous tumor considered by some authors as an aggressive type of basal cell carcinoma having a propensity for local recurrence and a potential risk for regional and distant metastatic spread. Herein we present 2 cases of basosquamous carcinoma of head and neck region, with metastatic spread to parotid gland (case 1) and to cervical nodes (case 2). Both patients had recurrence 2 years after initial treatment of the primary lesion (first patient: surgery; second patient: radiotherapy) and at the same time developed regional metastases. We conclude that basosqu
