Reduced proprioception may contribute to recurrent anterior shoulder instability. Twelve patients with unilateral shoulder instability were investigated for evidence of deficient proprioception with an activated pneumatic cylinder and surface electromyography electrodes; the contralateral normal shoulder was used as a control. Here, we present a description of Poland syndrome from the second session of the Anatomical Society (Paris, France) on 11 December 1803 of congenital mammary absence and muscular atrophy on the right side. This case report predates the first official description of the disease published by Alfred Poland in Guy's Hospital Reports (London, 1841). Consequently, perhaps would it be necessary to do justice to its French discoverer, and to name from now on this nosological entity the "syndrome of Marandel"?

CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old patient suffering from a granulomatous reaction to red dye of a large pectoral tattoo, with cutaneous and sub-cutaneous necrosis, and an infected axillary node. Different incubation conditions can cause eggshell temperature (EST) to deviate from optimum. Two experiments were performed to determine the effect of low EST at the start of incubation and high EST at the end of incubation on hatchability, chick quality, 6-wk live performance, and breast meat yield of broiler chickens. The modified PM myocutaneous flap was applied in 75 cases between 1982 and 1986 for the closure of major defects of the oral cavity, meso- and hypopharynx and the neck region. Notwithstanding almost all of the patients had stage IV tumour, we had a good aesthetic and functional result. There was no total flap necrosis. In three cases the partial necrosis spontaneously regressed. The details of the operation techniques are compared with other reconstructive methods, the advantage of the PM flap is discussed.

Patients with Poland syndrome were ascertained through the British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry, through hospital records, and through practicing plastic and orthopedic surgeons. Of 44 patients who were ascertained, 28 had family histories taken and were examined. Physical findings were: absence of the sternal head of the pectoralis major in all patients, symbrachydactyly in most patients, and infrequent other associations such as ipsilateral undescended testis, Möbius syndrome, clubfoot, and submucous cleft palate. Study of malformations of the hand makes possible the definition of three forms of progressive severity in the Poland syndrome, in which there is unilateral symbrachydactylie associated with homolateral aplasia of the pectoralis major.
