Effects of reducing screen media use on mental health, sleep, physical activity, heart rate variability, and behavioral patterns in peergroups of young people: a study protocol for a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Digital media has become deeply embedded in the daily lives of young people, raising concerns about potential effects on mental … variability, and behavioral patterns among adolescents and young adults within naturally occurring peer groups. METHODS: The PeerScreen trial is a parallel-group cluster-randomized controlled trial in which peer groups of adolescents and young adults aged 13-24 years are randomized to either a four-week screen media reduction intervention or a control cond …

Contextualizing the adolescent social brain: Links to social health using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Social health, defined as adequate quantity and quality of social relationships (Doyle & Link, 2024), is essential for human well-being. The social brain, a network of regions involved in social cognition, ostensibly facilitates social health; however, few studies assess how social brain function relates to different profiles of social health. We tested this association during early adolescence when close relationships with peers gain increased importance. We used baseline (8- to 11-years old) brain data and year 2 (10- to 13-years old) social health data from 5832 adolescents in the Adolescen

Peer-friendship Networks and Self-harm among Adolescents from Inner-city Schools: A Social Network Study.

Peer-relationships are critically important for adolescent behavior, but how peer-friendship network composition and structure influence adolescent self-harm is less clear. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the association between in-school peer-friendship networks, gender, and self-harm among inner-city adolescents. Participants were 2203 adolescents (mean age = 12.5 years, SD = 1.0; 53% girls) attending inner-city south London schools. Each adolescent nominated friends within their school year to construct sociometric peer-friendship networks and reported on lifetime self-

Associations between the group processes of bullying and adolescent substance use.

The adverse impact of bullying and victimization on substance use among youth has received increasing attention. Bullying is a specific type of aggressive behavior that not only involves bullies and victims but also followers, who actively support or reinforce the bully; defenders, who intervene to defend or assist the victim; or outsiders who passively observe or ignore the bullying. Limited research to date has linked these five bullying role behaviors to substance use. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between each of the bullying role behaviors and adolescent alcoho

Anxiety and Related Disorders and Concealment in Sexual Minority Young Adults.

Sexual minorities face greater exposure to discrimination and rejection than heterosexuals. Given these threats, sexual minorities may engage in sexual orientation concealment in order to avoid danger. This social stigma and minority stress places sexual minorities at risk for anxiety and related disorders. Given that three fourths of anxiety disorder onset occurs before the age of 24, the current study investigated the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression in sexual minority young adults relative to their heteros

Predictors of HIV-preventive sexual behavior in a high-risk adolescent population: the influence of perceived peer norms and sexual communication on incarcerated adolescents' consistent use of condoms.

Data were collected from 112 sexually active adolescents incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility to identify predictors of consistent use of condoms during sexual intercourse. Adolescents completed an anonymous epidemiologic survey instrument developed by the Centers for Disease Control. The self-report survey assessed demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. Three factors were identified as associated with consistent condom use. These significant bivariate factors were entered into a multivariate logistic regression model to identify the independent contribution of each factor

Developmental trajectories of conduct problems and time-varying peer problems: the Bergen child study.

BACKGROUND: While it is increasingly acknowledged that conduct problems and peer problems often co-occur in development, less is known about the ways in which peer problems may alter the developmental course of conduct problems for distinct subgroups. METHODS: Using data from a large population-based study in Norway (the Bergen Child Study/youth@hordaland; 47.4% males), we estimated group-based trajectories of conduct problems and the presence of time-varying peer problems on the developmental progression of conduct problems between seven and 19 years of age. Risk factors for group membership

The Role of Parental Influences in Chinese Adolescents' Academic Achievement through Shaping Friendship Network Dynamics.

Parents and friends are critical social influences on adolescents’ academic achievement, yet how they function together within dynamic friendship networks remains insufficiently understood. This study examined how parental influences (autonomy support, behavioral control, psychological control, and educational expectations) interact with friendship selection and influence processes to shape academic achievement of Chinese adolescents. A total of 1,419 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 12.35, SD = 3.04; 46.4% girls) participated in four-wave surveys across two years. Longitudinal social network analy

Understanding Safety in Online Mental Health Forums: Realist Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Online forums are used widely to facilitate mental health peer support. However, concerns exist regarding potential harm associated with their use, and little is known about forum safety from the user's perspective. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand how users experience safety within online mental health peer support forums. Following previous research, safety was conceptualized with reference to both experiences of harm and feelings of interpersonal safety within the forum environment. METHODS: Data were collected from 42 semistructured realist interviews and 504 cross-

Dares to addiction: youth definitions and perspectives on gambling.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, there has been a rapid growth of gambling in Canada and internationally. Although youth are a potentially vulnerable group, little is known about what they understand and if they are being affected by the recent increase in gambling. METHODS: This study examined how youth view gambling using an inductive qualitative research design and analysis based on grounded theory principles. Twelve focus groups were conducted comprising 103 participants (median age = 15 years) with diverse representation of Ontario youth. Focus-group questions were designed to capture y

The negotiation of sexual relationships among school pupils in south-western Uganda.

The objective of the study was to explore how school-going adolescents in south-western Uganda negotiate sexual relationships. Qualitative data were obtained from 15 boys and 15 girls (14-18 years old), during a series of role plays, focus group discussions and one-to-one interviews. A questionnaire was administered to 80 pupils (12-20 years old) from the same school. Most of the pupils were sexually active. Sexual relationships between boys and girls were mediated by peers. Boys initiated relationships. Exchange played an important role in the negotiation of sexual relationships. Money or gif

The association between social environment and school bullying among middle school students: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent bullying does not occur in a vacuum but is tied to experiences across peer, family, school, and broader social contexts. Employing an ecological perspective, this study used a mixed-methods approach to examine the associations among ecological environmental factors and bullying victimization (BV), bullying perpetration (BP), and bystander emotional reactions (BR) among Chinese middle school students. METHODS: We adopted a partially sequential mixed-methods design with a complementary purpose. Quantitative data were collected via questionnaires distributed to 411 student

Peer victimization disparities for sexual and gender diverse youth: Cross-informant reports and associated mental health.

Sexual and gender diverse (SGD) youth experience poorer well-being than their heterosexual, cisgender (HC) peers, partly due to elevated peer victimization. This study examined how youth's and adults' (i.e., parents' and teachers') recognition of peer victimization is related to SGD youth's mental health discrepancies. Using data from the British Millennium Cohort Study, we analyzed congruence in peer victimization reports from parent-youth dyads (Waves 4-6, n = 8260-8846) and teacher-youth dyads (Waves 4-5, n = 5354-5708). Youth were categorized into four cross-informant victimization classes
