Mesenchymal progenitors (MPs) are considered to play vital roles in bone development, growth, bone turnover, and repair. In recent years, benefiting from advanced approaches such as single-cell sequence, lineage tracing, flow cytometry, and transplantation, multiple MPs are identified and characterized in several locations of bone, including perichondrium, growth plate, periosteum, endosteum, trabecular bone, and stromal compartment. However, although great discoveries about skeletal stem cells (SSCs) and progenitors are present, it is still largely obscure how the varied landscape of MPs from…

Volkmann's ischemic contracture is a condition characterized by permanent ischemic damage to muscles and nerves due to vascular insufficienc … severe adhesions of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle at the myotendinous junction to the ulnar periosteum, with immediate recovery after release. This case highlights pseudo-Volkmann's contracture in an adult without fracture, likely due to blunt trauma causing delayed adhesion formation.

Macrodystrophia lipomatosa (MDL) is a rare sporadic, nonhereditary developmental condition, typically presenting at birth or in early childhood. It is characterized by progressive overgrowth of tissues, mainly due to excess fibrofatty tissue proliferation. This abnormal growth commonly involves nerve sheath, muscle, periosteum, and bone marrow. Herein, we present a case of a 10-month-old boy who was referred to our institution for evaluation of unilateral right lower limb enlargement. Clinical examination revealed soft tissue hypertrophy and syndactyly of the right lower limb. To assess the ex…

Schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors that rarely occur in the digits, with the ancient (degenerative) variant being even more uncommon. We describe the case of a 59-year-old male with a recurrent, painless thumb pulp mass. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a cystic-appearing lesion without significant postcontrast enhancement, interpreted as an epidermal inclusion cyst (EIC). Intraoperatively, the lesion was larger than expected and extended to the periosteum of the distal phalanx. Complete excision revealed a schwannoma with degenerative ("ancient") c…

Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCCS) is a rare variant of conventional chondrosarcoma with low-grade malignant features that may be confused radiographically and histologically with chondroblastoma. We report a case of a 50-year-old female who presented with 6 months of left hip pain. Initial radiographs demonstrated an osteolytic lesion with adjacent area of sclerosis in the proximal left femur. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a marrow-infiltrative lesion with periosteal reaction and thickened enhancing periosteum. Biopsy of the sclerotic area demonstrated chondroblastoma-like findings, w…

The goal of periodontal regenerative therapy is to predictably restore the tooth's supporting periodontal tissues and form a new connective tissue attachment of periodontal ligament (PDL) fibers and new alveolar bone. Periostin is a matricellular protein so named for its expression primarily in the periosteum and PDL of adult mice. Its biological functions have been widely studied in areas such as cardiovascular physiology and oncology. Despite being initially identified in the dental tissues and bone, investigations of Periostin functions in PDL and alveolar-bone-related physiopathology are l…

racture-dislocation of the proximal humerus (usually occurring after violent trauma) may be more frequently associated with a poor long-term results because the destruction of the hinged periosteum is associated with an high-risk of avascular necrosis of the head of the humerus (1, 2). Concomitant coracoid fracture with anterior shoulder dislocation in such case is something extremely rarely reported (8). Herein, we describe a challenging case of a 44 years old man with 4-parts fracture of the right proximal humerus, dislocation of the glenohumeral joint associated with coracoid avulsion. Cons…

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the safety and utility of the extended flexor carpi radialis (FCR) exposure and volar locking plate fixation for partially healed malaligned fractures of distal radius.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients with a partially healed malaligned fracture of the distal radius had realignment of the fracture using an extended FCR approach (release of the insertion of the brachioradialis and dorsal periosteum) and volar locked plate and screw fixation.
RESULTS: Retrospective review an average of 20 months after the index operation patients identifi…

The surgical results of severe or complex deviations such as those due to complete third nerve palsy, aberrant innervation of extraocular muscles (EOMs) and Duane syndrome are usually not completely successful. Herein, we describe the surgical technique of EOM fixation to the orbital wall. After a limbal or fornix based conjunctival incision, the related EOM is identified and dissected; the muscle insertion is sutured with non-absorbable sutures and detached from the sclera. The adjacent periosteum is exposed approximately 5 mm posterior to the orbital rim. The sutured muscle is then fixed to …

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms usually originating from the visceral pleura, but sometimes found in other sites like the orbit, dura, paranasal sinus, upper respiratory tract, thyroid, sublingual gland, lung, periosteum, cauda equina, ovary, scrotum and testicular tunica vaginalis. Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney is extremely rare with fewer than 15 reported cases in modern English literature. To the best of our knowledge, this report describes the first known case of synchronous SFTP in the left parietal pleura and left kidney. The SFTP of the…

OBJECTIVE: Central giant cell granuloma (GCG) is defined as an intraosseous lesion consisting of cellular fibrous tissue containing multiple foci of hemorrhage, aggregations of multinucleated giant cells. Peripheral GCG is a reactive exophytic lesion occurring on the gingiva and alveolar ridge originating from the periosteum or periodontal membrane, usually as a result of local irritating factors.
STUDY DESIGN: The case report evaluated long-term therapy of giant cell granuloma. A 9-year-old boy generally healthy was admitted to our clinic with a swelling in the frontal area of mandible. Gian…

The origin of cranial epidermoid cysts (EC) remains controversial, and although generally considered to be congenital, acquired origin has been reported. Three years previously, in the same location, she underwent resection of an intradermal melanocytic naevus of the skin under local anaesthesia with lidocaine infiltration of skin and periosteum. Focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia (FFCD) is a benign condition first described in 1985 as a cause of tibia vara. We are reporting on 11 cases. The lesions involved proximal tibia (9 cases), distal femur (1 case), and distal ulna (1 case). We believe that this entity represents a bony anchor preventing natural sliding of the periosteum during growth (an "epiphysiodesis-like" effect). For the tibia, we believe this is the pes anserinus. We are suggesting that this entity be called a "fibrous periostal inclusion." Treatment indications result from this concept: (1) for tibial lesions with a meta…
