BACKGROUND: There are no data on the cumulative effect of fly control and antibiotic distribution on trachoma in hyperendemic communities. We sought to determine whether insecticide spray intervention after mass antibiotic treatment could reduce trachoma and ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis in hyperendemic neighbourhoods in Tanzania.
METHODS: We did a single-blind, randomised clinical trial in 16 neighbourhoods (balozi) in Kongwa, Tanzania. All children aged 1-7 years were enrolled, with 119 children in the eight balozi of the intervention group and 183 in the eight control balozi.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever are common and serious arboviral diseases endemic in a number of countries situated in both the tropical and subtropical belts.
METHODS: A prospective study was carried out to examine the environmental factors influencing the ovipositing behaviour of gravid female Aedes mosquitoes in a typical urbanised residential environment in Malaysia. This study reports the effect of the usual ultra-low volume fogging of insecticides carried out by public health officers on the collection of immature Aedes mosquitoes using ovitraps.

A 9-year-old female developed facial papules and pustules since four years. Clinically, perioral dermatitis was suspected. Different topical therapy regimens and systemic anibiotics had been unsuccessful and a skin biopsy showed granulomatous (lupoid) rosacea. Only systemic antibiotic treatment with minocyclin led to healing of the skin lesions. While granulomatous rosacea-like dermatitis is more frequently diagnosed in adults, it is only rarely encountered in children where, in most of the cases, it represents a therapeutic challenge.

An infant with biopsy-proven scabies developed nodular lesions. Histopathology revealed atypical histiocytes with Langerhans cell features. Within six months after treatment all skin lesions gradually disappeared. We suggest that the nodules in scabies can be due to Langerhans cell proliferation.
