The highly reactive and cytotoxic hydroxyl radical (OH) was found by electrochemical detection to be produced in reactions involving hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the nitric oxide (NO) donor diethylamine- NO complex. Using aromatic hydroxylation of salicylate as a specific indicator of OH, three salicylate hydroxylation products were identified; catechol, 2,3- and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The aim of this work was to evaluate in an immunosuppressed rat cryptosporidiosis model a new method that combines vacuum and low-temperature hydrogen peroxide gas plasma for sterilization of endoscopic material contaminated by Cryptosporidium parvum. Rats were challenged with oocysts either air-dried or air-dried and treated with vacuum alone or associated with gas plasma. No rat was found infected after gas plasma exposure of oocysts, whereas vacuum or air-drying alone resulted only in a decreased infectivity.

While it is widely believed that taurine may play an important role in protecting cells against toxic injury by functioning as an antioxidant, there is a lack of evidence to support this hypothesis. OBJECTIVE: Measurement of hydrogen peroxide concentrations in breath condensate of mechanically ventilated patients with ARDS and with risk factors for developing ARDS.
DESIGN: Open study in intensive care patients.
SETTING: Intensive care units of the Clinics of the University of Göttingen, a primary care center.
PATIENTS: 10 post-operatively ventilated patients as a control group and 26 patients with acute respiratory failure, 7 of them with ARDS, 12 with polytrauma, 4 with pneumonia, 3 with cardiogenic or nephrogenic pulmonary edema.
