Personality disorders (PDs) are associated with an inferior quality of life, poor health, and premature mortality, leading to heavy clinical, familial, and societal burdens. The International Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11) makes a thorough, dramatic paradigm shift from the categorical to dimensional diagnosis of PD and expands the application into adolescence. We have reviewed the recent literature on practical implications, and severity and trait measures of ICD-11 defined PDs, by comparing with the alternative model of personality disorders in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and …

Empirical research using the Empathic Accuracy Task (EAT) has suggested that schizophrenia patients and people with schizotypal personality disorder exhibit lower empathic accuracy than healthy people. However, empathic accuracy in a subclinical sample with high levels of schizotypy has seldom been studied. Our study aimed to investigate empathy in a subclinical sample using the Chinese version of the EAT and a self-report empathy measure. Forty participants with high levels of schizotypy (HS participants) and 40 with low levels of schizotypy (LS participants), as measured by the Schizotypal P…

Speciation is familiar in radiations, but personality is not. In a recent article, Sommer-Trembo et al. linked exploratory behavior in African cichlids to a SNP in the promoter of a gene, the homolog of which is associated with human personality disorders, offering clues about the first fish of this radiation, with implications for vertebrate evolution.

The problem of paranoid disorders is widespread and difficult to diagnose due to the many mental symptoms that a person often perceives as character traits. Passion for work, the so-called pathological workaholism, harms not only the suffering person but also all the people around them, affecting their quality of life and disrupting social and family ties. The purpose of study was to determine the level of pathological workaholism and its main symptoms. The objectives of the study included interviewing respondents and identifying the correlation between the level of workaholism and mental mani

Schizoid personality pathology is among the most debilitating and enigmatic forms of personality pathology. Some have suggested that a potential etiological influence on schizoid pathology is trauma. Thus far, research on the association between trauma and schizoid pathology has focused primarily on type of trauma (e.g., abuse vs. neglect during childhood) rather than who perpetrated the trauma. This contrasts with recent research on trauma perpetrated by someone upon whom the survivor relies and/or trusts (i.e. betrayal trauma), which many studies show has a uniquely pernicious association wi…

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two treatment modalities for patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). A total of 100 psychiatric patients diagnosed with BPD participated in this study. Among them, 50 patients were outpatients who attended the Reason and Emotion (RIO) program, and the remaining 50 were inpatients who were treated on psychotherapeutic ward at the same hospital. All the participants filled out the following battery of tests when entering the program/psychotherapy ward and 3 months later: Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, Tennessee Self…

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is frequent (prevalence in Germany between 0.7% and 4.5%) [11] and is associated with a high level of psychological stress and frequent emergency inpatient admissions. The provision of disorder-specific outpatient psychotherapy is still insufficient also in Germany.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of the available data on the effectiveness of inpatient psychotherapy for BPD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A qualitative review on the effectiveness and therapy outcome predictors was conducted based on a literature search in PubMed.
RESULTS…

OBJECTIVE: Presence of gallstones is associated with a range of risk factors that have previously shown associations with personality traits. Our aim was to assess the differences in personality traits between the patients with and without gallstones.
METHODS: This study used a case-control design with 308 participants from the general population, 68.2% female, mean age 49.2 (SD 9.24) years, of whom 154 (50%) participants had asymptomatic gallstones. Personality was assessed with the Temperament and Character Inventory - Revised - 140 (TCI-R-140) and depression with the Center for Epidemiolog…

OBJECTIVES: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is a highly prevalent personality disorder, especially in clinical settings, yet scarcely researched. People diagnosed with AvPD have severe impairments in functioning and suffer greatly, yet we still lack meta-analytic evidence for therapy and only a few RCTs are conducted. Patient factors are the most important for outcome in therapy, in general. Lack of agency might be a core deficit in people diagnosed with AvPD. Their conditions might be improved if we understand their agency better. We review previous research regarding psychological mecha…

Chronotypes, the individual differences in daily activity timing, have profound associations with numerous physiological processes. Despite this, the covariance between chronotypes and other aspects of an individual's behaviour has been infrequently explored in non-human animals. This study delves into individual's variation across four axes of personality in a controlled environment, utilising the pearly razorfish, a model species for fish chronotype studies. We identified behavioural types across the aggressiveness continuum and established behavioural syndromes amongst exploration, activity…

Primary irrational beliefs, such as demanding about attaining personal goals, are a common trans-diagnostic factor involved in many emotional disorders. Although Bipolar Disorder (BPD) is a severe emotional disorder, little is known about the role of primary irrational beliefs in the risk of BPD. Given that the risk for mania is related to responses to positive rather than adverse events, we developed a measure of irrational beliefs in response to cues of positive events. This is the first study that examines the relationship between positive primary irrational beliefs and the risk of BPD. 119

In this editorial vision statement, the author expresses hope that he can provide stewardship for Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment (PDTRT) that follows in the path that his predecessors have laid over the past 12 years. The author is joined in this venture by Carla Sharp, the first associate editor in the history of the journal. He discusses open science initiatives and emphases in the journal, and the goal of PDTRT to increase diversity with regard to authors, reviewers, sample participants, and perspective. The niche-diversity hypothesis proposes that personality structure arises from the affordances of unique trait combinations within a society. It predicts that personality traits will be both more variable and differentiated in populations with more distinct social and ecological niches. Prior tests of this hypothesis in 55 nations suffered from potential confounds associated with differences in the measurement properties of personality scales across groups. Using psychometric methods for the approximation of cross-national measurement invariance, we tested the niche-diversity hypothesis in a s…

Borderline Personality Disorder in the Somatic Hospital Setting Abstract. The Borderline Personality Disorder is a common mental illness characterized by emotional instability, interactional difficulties, an unstable sense of self and impulsive behaviour which is often self-destructive. Since these problems frequently occur in the doctor-patient relationship, patients might be regarded as "difficult" or even manipulative. This may lead to stigmatization and medical undertreatment when due to common mental and somatic comorbidities the condition requires thorough high-standard medical care. Whe…

Most articles and theories about borderline personality disorder (BPD), either in the psychoanalytical field or the cognitivist one, explicitly or implicitly inscribe themselves in a topographical framework that either carry a fundamental representational a priori or give prominence to causal explanations. Less is written about the phenomenological everyday life-world of borderline people. This article aims to contribute to the description of such a world. Drawing upon clinical sequences that give prominence to the first-person perspective, we will analyse the experience of some typical "sympt…

Both clinical and personality psychologists are interested in assessing personality change, although they have tended to approach the issue in different ways. In this paper we argue that both sub-fields should focus more on basic issues in the assessment of personality change, and that they would make more progress on this issue together than alone. This Special Section on the Assessment of Personality Change includes four papers by researchers working primarily in basic personality science. Each paper addresses specific ways to advance the assessment of personality change that have both basic…

The goal of the current study was to examine the early childhood roots of adult personality pathology and intimate partner aggression in later life. Childhood maltreatment is associated with perpetration of intimate partner aggression (IPA) in adulthood, although the effect is generally only small to moderate in size. Childhood maltreatment is also linked with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) personality disorders (PDs) in adulthood, which in turn are correlated with IPA in adult romantic relationships. This suggests that one pathway by which childhood maltreatme…
