Neurobiological correlates of personality dimensions in borderline personality disorder using graph analysis of functional connectivity.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is is a type B personality disorder primarily characterized by a pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, a distorted self-concept, and intense emotional reactions, associated with extreme and opposing mental and behavioral states, which coexist and lead to destructive behaviors such as self-harm, commonly recurring over time.. The Personality Inventory for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Fifth Edition (PID-5) provides a dimensional assessment of maladaptive domains associated with personality disorders, improving t

Prevalence of the alternative model of personality disorders diagnoses in populational and at-risk samples, gender and age groups comparisons, and normative data for the LPFS-SR and PID-5.

The Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD), introduced in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), was proposed as a new operationalization of personality disorders (PDs) aiming to overcome the several limitations of the traditional symptom-based model (Waugh et al., 2017; Zimmerman et al., 2019). In the AMPD, PDs are defined by two-dimensional criteria (the level of personality functioning and maladaptive personality traits), but as a hybrid model, it also allows for categorical assessment of PDs (i.e.

Self-reported narcissistic traits in patients with addiction through the lens of the ICD-11 model for personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a presumption that pathological narcissism, or narcissistic personality disorder per se, can be considered a precursor to addiction. Although the ICD-11 model does not distinguish specific personality disorders, narcissistic psychopathology should be captured through personality trait qualifiers. OBJECTIVES: To verify the capacity of the ICD-11 model in the detection of narcissistic psychopathology in patients with addiction; to test its discrimination capacity, convergent validity, and specificity toward the gender and the type of addiction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two s

Reliability and validity of depressive personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Depressive personality disorder was introduced into DSM-IV's appendix amid controversy. While that disorder appears to be a reliable and valid one, the authors offer new data about its relationship to major depression, dysthymic disorder, and other personality disorders. METHOD: The authors assessed 54 subjects with early-onset, long-standing mild depressive features for depressive personality disorder, axis I and axis II disorders, family history, and treatment history; they conducted follow-up interviews 1 year after the baseline assessment. Subjects with (N=30) and without (N=24

Personality and clinical characteristics in patients with trichotillomania.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania, a disorder of self-directed hair pulling, has been the subject of few systematic studies. Although personality characteristics and disorders are often noted to coexist with trichotillomania, no thorough assessment of comorbidity with DSM-III-R Axis II disorders has been published. The present study was conducted to evaluate personality disorders and other personality characteristics in a large outpatient population of trichotillomanics and to compare these findings with those in a nontrichotillomanic comparison group. METHOD: Forty-eight outpatient female trichot

MMPI personality disorder scales and the MCMI: concurrent validity.

A set of DSM-III personality disorder scales recently were developed for the MMPI. The purpose of the present investigation was to provide data on the concurrent validity of these scales. Scores from both the overlapping and nonoverlapping MMPI personality disorder scales were compared against the criterion of the personality disorder scales of the MCMI in 47 psychiatric patients. In general, the MMPI personality scales correlated significantly with the corresponding MCMI scales. However, the antisocial (ANT), compulsive (CPS), and paranoid (PAR) scales of the MMPI failed to achieve adequate c

Self-Other Mentalizing and Attachment Insecurity in the Dimensional Model of Personality Disorders: From Research to Clinical Practice.

Research on different aspects of mentalizing is essential for understanding the mechanisms underlying personality disorders (PDs) and for informing psychotherapy approaches, in which mentalizing is considered a key mechanism of change. This study aimed to explore whether self- and other-mentalizing, in interaction with attachment insecurity, differentially explain Criteria A (level of personality functioning) and B (maladaptive traits) of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in the DSM-5. Our sample consisted of 109 participants (54% female, 41% male and 5% nonbinary). We used the S

Dimensions of personality disorders in offenders.

BACKGROUND: Owing to criticisms of current concepts of personality disorders such as high comorbidity, criteria overlap and arbitrary thresholds of categorical diagnoses, a dimensional assessment is proposed that considers interrelations between different personality disorders. Results of previous factor analyses using dimensional personality disorder scores have indicated that one underlying dimension shows strong similarities to the concept of psychopathy and is similarly related to criminal recidivism. AIM: The authors examined the underlying dimensions of ICD-10 personality disorders, to

Integrating personality functioning in brief psychotherapy for substance use disorders: a case study.

A large treatment gap exists for substance use disorders (SUDs) in India. Among other factors, personality vulnerabilities are widely implicated in the initiation and maintenance of SUDs leading to poor outcomes. Available brief interventions do not adequately address this. Longer term therapies are resource intensive and therefore difficult to incorporate in tertiary care settings due to poor treatment provider-patient ratio. Further, trait-based and categorical models have limited application in brief psychotherapies. Core pathology seen across personality disorders such as the impairments i

Personality network neuroscience: Promises and challenges on the way toward a unifying framework of individual variability.

We propose that the application of network theory to established psychological personality conceptions has great potential to advance a biologically plausible model of human personality. Stable behavioral tendencies are conceived as personality "traits." Such traits demonstrate considerable variability between individuals, and extreme expressions represent risk factors for psychological disorders. Although the psychometric assessment of personality has more than hundred years tradition, it is not yet clear whether traits indeed represent "biophysical entities" with specific and dissociable neu

Personality and its Relation to Mental and Psychosocial Health in Emerging Adult Sexual Minority Men: The P18 Cohort Study.

Personality disorder and personality pathology encompass a dimension of psychological dysfunction known to severely impact multiple domains of functioning. However, there is a notable dearth of research regarding both the pervasiveness and correlates of personality pathology among young sexual minority males who themselves experience heightened mental health burdens. Using the self-report version of the Standardized Assessment of Personality-Abbreviated Scale we tested associations between distinct personality characteristics with sociodemographic and psychosocial factors as well as mental hea
