Language-based AI modeling of personality traits and pathology from life narrative interviews.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) hold promise for clarifying personality disorder (PD) models, research methodology, understanding, and clinical treatment. This study models personality and personality pathology using natural language. A representative community sample of N = 1,409 older adults from St. Louis (33% Black, 65% White, and 2% other) completed life narrative interviews lasting on average 20 min. Language from the interviews was then used to train and test language-based personality models on scores from the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised and the Structured Interview for …

Validity of the MMPI-3 Antagonism Scale in assessing psychopathic personality traits: Findings from a community sample.

The present study examined the construct and incremental validity of the new Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) Antagonism (ANT) scale in the assessment of psychopathic personality traits given the centrality of the antagonism domain to this personality disorder construct. A sample of 231 individuals who had been recruited for subclinical psychopathy and externalizing traits from the general community was used. These participants had been administered a range of clinical interviews and self-report measures of psychopathy from which a four-factor model of psychopathy (affect…

An exploration of the link between narcissism, masochism, and crime in a post-incarcerated sample.

To assess individuals' degree of narcissistic and masochistic thinking, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory and the underserving self-image subscale of the Self-Defeating Interpersonal Style Scale were administered via a Qualtrics survey. Neuroanatomical correlates of personality traits in temporal lobe epilepsy: Findings from the Epilepsy Connectome Project.

Behavioral and personality disorders in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have been a topic of interest and controversy for decades, with less attention paid to alterations in normal personality structure and traits. In this investigation, core personality traits (the Big 5) and their neurobiological correlates in TLE were explored using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) through the Epilepsy Connectome Project (ECP). NEO-FFI scores from 67 individuals with TLE (34.6 ± 9.5 years; 67% women) were compared to 31 health

Affective temperaments and psychopathological dimensions of personality in bipolar and cyclothymic patients.

The aims of the study were: (1) to study possible associations between temperament, personality dimensions, and psychopathological variables in a clinical sample of euthymic patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and cyclothymia; and (2) to assess how Cloninger's temperament and personality dimensions were associated with affective temperaments. Participants, consisting of 60 patients with BD (type I or II) and cyclothymia in the euthymic phase, completed Akiskal's Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), and Cloninger's Temperament and Character

Search for the influence of the tyrosine hydroxylase (TCAT)(n) repeat polymorphism on personality traits.

A putatively functional tetranucleotide repeat polymorphism in the tyrosine hydroxylase gene (TH) has been investigated with regard to different aspects of psychopathology. We investigated whether reported associations of this TH polymorphism may reflect associations with common personality traits. Personality was assessed by the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised version (NEO PI-R), in 205 healthy Caucasian volunteers. Tendencies for higher scores in the neuroticism (N) facets, Angry hostility (P=0.008) and Vulnerability (P=0.021), were observed among carriers of one of the alleles (T8). Healt…

Growth environment and personality in adult migraineurs and their migraine-free siblings.

The aim of the study was to compare adult migraine discordant full siblings in terms of personality and psychosocial environment during childhood. The study, involving 30 sibling pairs and use of various personality instruments (Eysenck Personality Inventory [EPI], Color Word Test [CWT], Visual Aftereffects [VAE], Meta Contrast Technique [MCT], Cesarec-Marke Personality Schedule), showed the migraineurs scored significantly higher on neuroticism [EPI], also called emotional stress or trait anxiety; to be more sensitive (MCT); and to display signs of greater anxiety (VAE, CWT). Furthermore, mig…

The construct of impulsivity has to date remained relatively unexplored in the pathological gambling literature. This is in spite of recent … irrors components contained in Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Psychoticism Scale, the California Personality Inventory Socialization Scale and DSM-III Antisocial Personality Disorder. This is manifest both in terms of high intercorrelations between the measures of psychopathy and impulsivity and in their predictive relationship to the level of psychological distress …

Idiopathic constipation by colonic dysfunction. Relationship with personality and anxiety.

The personality of two groups of constipated women (by delayed colonic transit or by colonic inertia) was compared to that of two control groups of arthritic patients (rheumatoid or degenerative disease) with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). All subjects suffered from chronic pain. Constipated women were found to have significantly higher scores on the hypochondria, hysteria, control, and low back pain scales and a lower score on the masculinity-femininity scale. Discriminant analysis permitted us to sort out constipated from arthritic patients in 83% of the cases, on th…

Differing associations between measures of somatic symptom reporting, personality, and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

Objective: Somatic complaints are known to complicate recovery after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but the construct is poorly understood due to evolving definitions of associated disorders and uncertainty related to its position within the broader construct network of psychopathology. Methods: To better understand measures of somatic symptom reporting widely used with mTBI patients, we examined relationships between the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 Somatization (SOM) scale, the Minnesota Multiple Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form Somatic Complaints (RC1) scale, other measures of p…

Direct and indirect influences of childhood abuse on depression symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is known that the onset, progression, and prognosis of major depressive disorder are affected by interactions between a number of factors. This study investigated how childhood abuse, personality, and stress of life events were associated with symptoms of depression in depressed people. METHODS: Patients with major depressive disorder (N = 113, 58 women and 55 men) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Neuroticism Extroversion Openness Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CATS), and the Life Experiences Survey (LES), which are se

Generalizability theory distinguishes between state and trait anxiety.

Accurate distinction between state and trait anxiety is necessary for assessment and monitoring of individual anxiety levels over time and developing effective interventions to reduce anxiety. Generalizability theory (G-theory) is a suitable method to distinguish between state and trait and to evaluate reliability of test scores and sources of measurement error in the assessment of affective conditions. We applied G-theory to the widely used 40-item State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) completed by 139 participants on three occasions separated by 2-week intervals. The results show that bot

Personality traits and coping strategies in recent-onset psychosis: Associations with symptom severity and psychosocial functioning.

BACKGROUND: Personality and coping may be related to symptom severity and psychosocial functioning in patients with recent-onset psychosis. This study aimed to investigate associations of personality traits and coping strategies with concurrent and follow-up symptom severity and functioning in those patients, and identify whether coping mediates relations between personality and symptoms or functioning. METHODS: At baseline, 527 recent-onset psychosis patients (73 % male, mean age = 28 years) received assessments on personality (Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness - Five-Factor Inventory), copi
