The effect of different flushing methods in a short peripheral catheter.

PURPOSE: To develop a rabbit model of a short peripheral catheter (SPC) and to observe the effects of different flushing methods on blood vessels. METHODS: Thirty rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (A, B, and C), with ten rabbits per group. In group A, we used pulsed flush; in group B, we used uniform flush; and no treatment was used in group C. RESULTS: We observed that a uniform flush reduced blockage, phlebitis, and exudation compared to a pulsed flush by visual observation. The histopathological examination found that the morphological changes in group A were more severe tha…

[Peripheral venous catheter-related E. faecalis sepsis with fatal outcome].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 82 year-old man was admitted with a facial Herpes zoster reactivation and a zoster-related meningoencephalitis. He was treated with Aciclovir over a peripheral venous catheter that was placed in the right elbow pit. The meningoencephalitis subsided without neurological deficits, but the patient developed a catheter-associated phlebitis. An oral cephalosporin was prescribed and the patient discharged. After developing a fever and general discomfort he was readmitted to hospital three days later. INVESTIGATIONS: A 3 × 3 cm abscess in the elbow pit was incised a…

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver and peripheral eosinophilia in autoimmune pancreatitis.

AIM: Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the liver is a rare benign lesion, the etiology of which remains obscure. It is not associated with any particular diseases apart from phlebitis and Crohn's disease. METHODS: A middle-aged male with hepatic IPT and peripheral eosinophilia associated with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) was selected for this study and review of literature. RESULTS: A 59-year-old male was admitted with obstructive jaundice, marked eosinophilia (1 343/mm(3)) and hypergammaglobulinemia (4 145 mg/dL). Imaging techniques revealed dilatation of the intrahepatic bile duct, stenos…

Lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreato-cholangitis: a case report and review of the literature.

Autoimmune pancreatitis is a rare but important cause of pancreatitis that is becoming increasingly recognized in the West. Lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis (LPSP) is a benign form of chronic pancreatitis characterized clinically by infrequent attacks of abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss, and pathologically by focal or diffuse chronic or lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltrates centered around pancreatic ducts and ductules, accompanied by obliterative phlebitis, acinar atrophy, and interstitial fibrosis. It has been described alone or as a part of the spectrum of autoimmune …

[Popliteal vein entrapment, popliteal cyst, desmoid tumor and fabella syndrome].

The popliteal fossa is a relatively small, muscle-bound strategic anatomical area where is found, on the posterior aspect of the knee, a vas … r to thrombosis onset. Synovial cysts raise no diagnostic problems, unless they mimic an episode of phlebitis; echotomography has now become essential for diagnosis. Desmoid tumors for which predominant extra-abdominal occurrence sites are the popliteal fossa, the leg and thigh, are difficult to excise completely, especially at the popliteal level, and are …

Phase II trial of idarubicin (4-demethoxydaunorubicin) in advanced breast cancer. The Clinical Screening Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer.

A phase II trial of idarubicin (IDR-4 demethoxydaunorubicin) was carried out in patients with advanced breast cancer. A dose of 45 mg/m2 was … e to its simplicity of administration associated with the lack of risk of extravasation or chemical phlebitis and also the possibility of it being able to reduce cardiotoxicity. Even if the equiefficacy of IDR and DXR has not, as yet, been clearly demonstrated, IDR should be chosen with preference to DXR when administration is not suitable.

Percutaneous sheath brachial vein cardiac catheterization in children.

During the past ten years we have performed certain phases of cardiac catheterization on 48 children using a modified percutaneous sheath te … no deaths, heart or vein perforations, or systemic infections. One patient developed a superficial phlebitis; this was mild and temporally limited. We have not encountered any case of clinically apparent venous thrombosis. The descriptions in six histological examinations, the reports as `phlebitis' of apparently similar lesions, the report of `sclerosing lymphangitis' in other sites, and the known histological similarity between veins and lymphatics suggest that `sclerosing lymphangitis' is too specific a term. A pediatric case of orbital inflammation and sinusitis- the diagnostic boundary between localized ANCA-associated vasculitis and IgG4-related disease.

ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) are characterized by necrotizing inflammation of small- and medium-sized blood vessels, frequently associat … onstrated lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates, an elevated IgG4+/IgG+ plasma cell ratio, and obliterative phlebitis, suggestive of IgG4-RD. However, markedly elevated MPO-ANCA levels raised suspicion for AAV. Although glucocorticoid therapy initially achieved clinical improvement, relapses occurred, prompting treatment with rituximab. Subsequently, the patient de …

IgG4-related disease complicated with diffuse and chronic gastrointestinal inflammation leading to small intestinal perforation.

Immunoglobulin (Ig) G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic inflammatory disease characterised by elevated serum IgG4, IgG4+ cell infiltration, storiform fibrosis, and obliterative phlebitis. While IgG4-RD can affect various organs, gastrointestinal tract involvement is less common. Here, we report a 70-year-old female with IgG4-RD complicated with diffuse and chronic gastrointestinal inflammation, which led to small intestinal perforation. She had been suffering from anorexia, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea and hospitalised due to recurrent ileus. Consequently, she was referred du…
