Accurate information on the chemical nature of soil phosphorus is essential for understanding its bioavailability and fate in wetland ecosystems. Solution phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR) spectroscopy was used to assess the conventional colorimetric procedure for phosphorus speciation in alkaline extracts of organic soils from the Florida Everglades. Molybdate colorimetry markedly overestimated organic phosphorus by between 30 and 54% compared to NMR spectroscopy. This was due in large part to the association of inorganic phosphate with organic matter, although the error was …

Dairy manure application to soils can result in phosphorus (P)-related degradation of water quality. The P in these manure-impacted soils can be labile even years after abandonment and under conditions normally associated with high P stability. Failure of P to stabilize with time compounds the environmental consequences of dairy manure disposal, especially on sandy soils. The objectives of this study were to compare chemical characteristics of active and abandoned dairy manure-impacted soils and minimally impacted soils and to assess the continuous release of P in relation to sparingly soluble…

Three chemicals, ferrous sulfate (Fe-sul), calcium oxide (CaO), and aluminum sulfate (alum), were used to stabilize phosphorus (P) in fresh, anaerobically digested sewage sludge (FSS). The chemically stabilized sludge materials and biosolids compost (BSC) were compared with the FSS with respect to water-soluble phosphorus (WSP) content in its inorganic (WSP(i)) and organic (WSP(o)) forms as well as water-soluble organic carbon (DOC). Solid-state P speciation was further probed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray elemental spec…

BACKGROUND: Reduced renal function is associated with a variety of biochemical abnormalities. However, the extent of these changes and their … Sample weights were used to produce weighted regression parameters.
RESULTS: Changes in mean serum phosphorus and potassium concentration were evident at relatively modest reductions in CrCl (around 50 to 60 ml/min). Changes in the anion gap and mean levels of ionized calcium and bicarbonate were not apparent until CRI was advanced (CrCl </=20 ml/min). For …

Infants born extremely prematurely are deprived of the placental supply of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (Prog) at an earlier developmental stage compared to an infant born at term. We hypothesized that the retention of Ca (calcium) and P (phosphorus) would be improved by an E2 and Prog replacement. Twenty female infants with a mean gestational age of 26.6 weeks (+/-1.5 SD) and a mean birth weight of 744 g (+/-156) were enrolled in a randomized controlled pilot study. One group received an E2 and Prog replacement to maintain intrauterine plasma concentrations of E2 and Prog and the other gro…

We have developed transgenic mouse models to determine whether endogenous expression of phytase transgenes in the digestive tract of monogastric animals can increase the bioavailability of dietary phytate, a major but indigestible form of dietary phosphorus. We constructed phytase transgenes composed of the appA phytase gene from Escherichia coli regulated for expression in salivary glands by the rat R15 proline-rich protein promoter or by the mouse parotid secretory protein promoter. Transgenic phytase is highly expressed in the parotid salivary glands and secreted in saliva as an enzymatical…

This 6-week study was designed to determine the effects of graded doses of caffeine intake (3, 25 or 100 mg/kg per day) on the metabolic balance and tissue concentrations of fluoride, calcium and phosphorus in Sprague-Dawley rats. Caffeine intake did not affect the absorption, urinary excretion or balance of fluoride, the plasma, bone or enamel concentrations of fluoride, nor the occurrence of incisor enamel fluorosis. Neither did it affect the metabolism of calcium or phosphorus except that the urinary excretion of calcium was increased. This effect, however, was not sufficient to influence s…

A patient with chronic renal insufficiency had hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia, metabolic acidosis, and QT prolongation on electrocardiogram after taking prescribed laxatives containing phosphorus. Clinical findings included tetany in the form of Chvostek's and Trousseau's signs. Symptoms resolved after careful rehydration and electrolyte replacement. The interactions between these electrolytes are described. Patients with moderate to severe renal dysfunction should avoid use of laxatives containing phosphorus. If these laxatives are used in patients with mild rena…

The dietary intake of phosphorus in the United States is high relative to calcium. Intake estimates from the 1989-1991 Continuing Surveys of Food Intakes by Individuals conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture show that for both men and women, median calcium intakes do not meet the 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for most age groups over 10 y of age, whereas phosphorus intakes exceed the RDAs for most age groups. The use of phosphorus-containing food additives in the processing of foods contributes substantially to the daily phosphorus intake, and their use is increasing. Bec…

The relative bioavailability of P from seven sources was determined in relation to a standard dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (CaHPO4.2H2O) in a 21-d assay involving 1,320 broiler male chicks using several response criteria. The seven sources (Lucaphos-48, Lucaphos-40, Rukana, Cefkaphos-N, phosphoric acid, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, or Biophos) were added to the basal diet (.40% total P and 1.10% Ca) at levels to supply .05, .08, .12, .17, .23, and .32% P. Two additional levels (.44 and .66%) of P from dicalcium phosphate dihydrate were included for the standards. The criteria selected t

Despite the use of metabolic balance studies and measurements of bone mineral content, it is difficult to assess the requirements of Ca and P in growing infants. From observations made forty years ago with cow's milk formulas it is obvious what is too much calcium and phosphorus in infant formulas. These observations were utilized in the development of "humanized cow's milk formulas" in the 1950s. Though the total concentrations of Ca and P have been greatly reduced in these formulas, the Ca/P ratio imbalance, compared to human milk, persists. Infants fed these formulas still receive a relativ…

For 10 years, 42 female Herefords (as they progressed from weanling calves to aged cows) were fed diets individually, with phosphorus (P) content being the only variable. During growth and the first 3 gestations, clinically evident differences were not associated with 2 dietary treatments (approx 12 and 38 g of P/day). During the next 2 gestations (2 years), half the cows from each original treatment group were fed less than 6 g of P (n = 21 cows, 11 from the group fed 12 g of P/day and 10 from the group fed 38 g of P/day) daily. The other half were fed diets supplying approximately 8 g of P (…

The effect of alkalosis (pH greater than 7.55) on total calcium, ionized calcium, and serum phosphorus was studied in seven infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH) before, during, and after hyperventilation. Hyperventilation-induced alkalosis resulted in marked decreases in total calcium, phosphorus, and ionized calcium. There was an inverse correlation between plasma Ca+2 and pH; a 0.1-unit increase in blood pH decreased Ca+2 by 0.42 mg/dl. Two of the study infants had ionized calcium concentrations less than 2.5 mg/dl during hyperventilation. These disturbing changes in total ca…

A preterm infant with hypophosphataemic rickets became hypocalcaemic when given milk specially formulated for preterm infants that contained increased phosphorus and calcium. The rickets resolved spontaneously. Routine calcium and phosphorus supplementation for preterm neonates should be investigated further.

The effect of unbalanced nutrition on mineral metabolism has been demonstrated. The leading role in the maintenance of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis has been found to belong to vitamin D. It has been shown, however, that retinol, thiamine, riboflavine and pyridoxine as well as polyvitamin deficiencies are capable of producing an adverse effect on the calcium and phosphorus balance. Deficiency of food proteins results in an appreciable reduction in the blood mineral content and in another deterioration of the calcium and phosphorus balance. The studies have shown that different hypovitamin…

53 patients were followed up for an average of 3 years after renal transplantation for evaluation of disturbances in calcium-phosphorus metabolism and skeletal diseases. Postoperative hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia can be related to persistence of hyperparathyroidism when kidney function is restored. Hypercalcemia was observed in 43% of the patients and lasted less than one year in 80% of cases. Transient hypophosphatemia was present in 15%. These abnormalities did not cause clinical symptoms or deterioration of renal function. However, the skeletal diseases are more impressive and in the …
