Digital measurement of pallor-disc ratio.

In an effort to quantitate optic nerve head pallor, a method has been devised to measure pallor-disc ratio using optic nerve head photographs. After electronically scanning photographs through various Wratten filters, it was observed that a red filter produces good contrast between the disc and the retinal surface, while a green filter produces good contrast between the pale area of the disc and the remaining normal-appearing nerve head. A computer program fitted an elliptical form to both the disc region of red image and the pale area of green image. Pallor-disc ratios were calculated on both

The pallor of the optic disc. A quantitative photographic assessment by purple filter.

By employing purple colour filters with a large blue and a small red transmission, normal and atrophic optic disks were photographed on colour transparencies. Normal optic disks reflect red light, and atrophic optic disks reflect blue light. The degree of atrophy estimated by colour contrast is quantitated by microdensitometry in the blue (470 nm) and in the red (640 nm) region of the transparencies. The difference between the blue and red density is used as an expression of optic disc colour.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease under the lens: Insights from multimodal ocular imaging.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem autoimmune condition targeting melanocyte-rich ocular tissues, with inflammation primarily affecting the choroid. Despite advances in diagnostic criteria, disease staging and therapeutic decisions still rely heavily on clinical observation, with limited integration of imaging biomarkers. This review examines the evolving role of multimodal ocular imaging (MMI) in the diagnosis, monitoring, and prognostication of VKH. We critically appraise the utility and limitations of color fundus photography, fluorescein angiography (FFA), indocyanine gree…

In Vivo Non-Invasive Observation of Dynamic Changes in Hair Shaft, Melanin, and Collagen During the Mice Hair Follicle Cycle.

Traditional evaluations of the hair follicle cycle rely on invasive histological methods, limiting continuous longitudinal observation. It was hypothesized that non-invasive optical imaging, particularly two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) and second-harmonic generation (SHG), can accurately track and quantify in vivo dynamic changes in hair shafts, melanin, and collagen across multiple hair follicle cycles. The hair shafts of C57BL/6 mice were monitored in vivo during the anagen, catagen, and telogen phases using dermoscopy, photography, and electron microscopy. Specifically, TPEF under 80…

Deep optic nerve head morphology and glaucoma progression in eyes with and without laminar dot sign: a longitudinal comparative study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between the laminar dot sign (LDS) and the deep optic nerve head (ONH) structure in eyes with primary-open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: Eighty-four eyes of 84 patients with POAG were prospectively included. All of the patients underwent stereo optic disc photography (SDP), red-free retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) photography, SS-OCT, and standard automated perimetry. By evaluating the SDP, patients were classified into laminar dot sign (LDS) and non-LDS groups. The deep structure of the ONH including the anterior prelaminar depth (APLD) and prelamin…

Parsing the craniofacial phenotype: effect of weight change in an obstructive sleep apnoea population.

PURPOSE: Craniofacial structure is an important risk factor in the development of obstructive sleep apnoea. Most craniofacial imaging methods are not feasible for large-scale studies or the clinic. Craniofacial photography is a high-throughput technique for facial phenotyping; however, derived measurements are a composite of skeletal and soft tissue craniofacial information. Weight change is a paradigm to help determine which facial measurements most relate to regional soft tissue (i.e. change with weight) versus skeletal structure (i.e. stable with weight changes). We aimed to assess the asso…

Safety and efficacy of explanting or replacing suprachoroidal electrode arrays in a feline model.

BACKGROUND: A key requirement for retinal prostheses is the ability for safe removal or replacement. We examined whether suprachoroidal electrode arrays can be removed or replaced after implantation. METHODS: Suprachoroidal electrode arrays were unilaterally implanted into 13 adult felines. After 1 month, arrays were surgically explanted (n = 6), replaced (n = 5) or undisturbed (n = 2). The retina was assessed periodically using fundus photography and optical coherence tomography. Three months after the initial implantation, the function of replaced or undisturbed arrays was assessed by measu…

Vasospastic transient monocular visual loss: effect of treatment with different doses of nifedipine.

Transient monocular visual loss (TMVL) usually is due to hypoperfusion of the optic nerve or retinal circulation. After the exclusion of thromboembolic and carotid artery diseases, retinal vasospasm should be considered as an underlying cause of TMVL. We report a patient with an increasing number of transient attacks of unilateral blindness. Vasospasm was confirmed as the etiology by fundus photography during an attack. Nifedipine 10 mg/d decreased the severity of the visual loss and the number of attacks. The patient was relieved of symptoms entirely with a nifedipine dose of 20 mg/d.

Microscopic rhinoscopy in lepromatous leprosy.

Ten patients with lepromatous leprosy have been studied to detect intranasal pathology by conventional naked eye rhinoscopy and also by use of the surgical microscope. The comparison of both methods reveals that microscopic rhinoscopy is superior in providing more accurate details of intranasal lesions in leprosy and biopsy can be taken in a precise manner from accurate and representative sites. Use of the microscope with adequate exposure and bright illumination provides precise details of lesions and an opportunity for bimanual manipulation, photography, teaching and recording. Thus, it is w…

[Device for determining surfactant status by the Pattle method].

An apparatus for determination of the state of the lung surfactant by measuring the stability of air bubles in a hanging drop by Pattle's method is described. Its construction permits multiple photographing of 5 hanging drops in identical areas at any intervals, thereby achieving standardization of the test (microscopy, photography) and shortening its performance. This device allows comparative study of surfactant in different parts of the lung which is particularly important in pathological conditions. It may be used for time-course microscopic examination and microphotography of other biolog…
